Discontinued The Grasshopper

Hopping in Washington
I sent my hoppers in for RMA got them back and they were randomly incinerating a load, and now that they're back in RMA they are questioning the marks from using pliers on my backend to turn the temp dial, and the one hopper I have with an off kilter temp dial, it was that way when I got it.

I have arthritis in my hands and I find the temp dial a devil to turn. I've had my hoppers die in between RMA's and turning the temp dial repeatedly has brought them back to life several times. My hands can't take it. I hope they aren't going to say I damaged them.

They once enquired about my blue front end, I accidentally turned it purple and then bronze with PBW.
I think they were just interested to see something different and wanted to know about it/what to do with it.
They sent it back to me after I explained what happened, though nothing was wrong with it beyond aesthetics.

In your case, depending on if there's a problem beyond appearance, they should easily be able to fix it for you. There's a good chance you'll get it back still scuffed, as the parts (depending on damage) should still be reusable.

If they have to replace the back-end it might be trickier to resolve, they do sell seperate back-ends, I'm pretty sure in a worst case it won't be too costly.

How bad was the damage?

I'd suggest trying a silicone hose section stretched over the dial (could be difficult to install, but once on it helps leverage and grip slightly).
Alternatively, you could possibly cover the pliers to reduce any scuffing.

Considering the internals of the back-end, I'd guess you'd be fine and it shouldn't have caused permanent issues, but the circuitry contained within might have been compromised.
If that's all, they'll make sure it wasn't damaged in transit or by their technicians, fix it and send it back to you.

Because of this, I’m thinking of adding to my VAS & waiting for the Haze Square to come out & retiring the hopper.

Once in a while I like to test my VAS.... Haze Square, first time I've heard of this via your post, Johnny...

Went on Youtube and watched the trade-show video preview of it...

It's kind of neat, but my first thoughts were
1) Small pieces to lose somewhere, but multiple chambers avoids constant loading.
2) One internal battery that, if it dies, it doesn't matter if I DID have an extra chamber loaded, since I can't replace the battery and get up and running fast.
3) Small pieces to lose somewhere. Yeah, that keeps repeating in my head. Two mouthpieces, 4) chamber pods...
5) Reminds me of my AppleTV.

Gotta say, I love my Hoppers though... the idea of a "pen" design just seems (to me) the most comfortable way to stealthily vape. Sucking on a big square thing, nah.

I did that with one of my back ends ... similar story, and this one got super difficult to turn, so to do so repeatedly for ~50 rotations would actually injure my fingers to maintain the grip required (so pliers). They replaced mine w/ no questions asked (literally, I never even got asked about it)

I've got a brand new blue TI hopper arriving in the mail today. What are people's preferred initial setup/cleaning/usage tips? Also, will my SS PFE pair with this? This is my first experience with the TI models.
Initial setup - fully charge battery, dry qtip wipe down of the chamber for any dust/debris, IMO a burn off is not necessary. Hot water rinse the Front End, set out to dry and you're ready to rock!
Yes mixed metals should pair together no problem. I prefer the Ti models over the SS, enjoy :D

FMI does anyone of the 'early birds' already got his pre-ordered leather sleeve?

There seem to be enough in stock but I haven't heard anything of fullfilled pre-orders regarding this item.

A friend of mine who has a long year pre-order didn't get his leather sleeve up to now at least and also no notification about.

One more question: Is there any way to test with just a Nitecore D2 whether or not a hopper battery is still functioning the way it should be / hasn't dropped off? I'm sitting on like 9 or 10 batteries from RMAs/etc. of various ages (all 8 months or less) and would like to isolate those which are still worth using. I do not own a multimeter.

I think the only thing you can do is count the time it takes to charge each battery, but then I would also try to drain them by going to 1 heat setting after you get flashing red and see if you can get it to heat again

Then all batteries are a bit more equal and the ones that take shortest to charge should have the lowest capacity

Then just see how many bowls you get with a fresh one and chuck the "under a bowl" batteries

Also noticed my bad batteries start charging little under 3,7v and also charge up at lower amp + charges really fast because little capacity

Best idea I got at least

My hopper's been back for a whole week now so let me share my thoughts. The unit came back rocking, great extraction from the get go and the abv came out nice and dark. From previous experience I learnt to not make any more premature claims about how great it's working so I decided to hold off for 2 weeks which is the usual time it took to deteriorate again. Anyway by Friday, 3 days later, I already saw a drop in performance. I can still get dark abv if I keep at the same load but I have to take a few more pulls to get the dark results. Now it's Monday and abv will only get a medium tan at best. Wrote to Caroline today to see if I can send it back before it drops again to an unacceptable level. Maybe they can get it back while it's in the process of degrading and they can determine why my hopper never last more than 2 weeks of legitimate performance before it falls apart. This is game is getting old, I have the patience for 1 more round and then this is going in the drawer:disgust:

My two hoppers' performance stay pretty even. You may be getting material going below the screen and affecting temp sensor. After every bowl, to empty the chamber I do it by rapping (bumping) the hopper on its edge, upside down to let the material fall out. I try to find something wooden to rap it on. Once empty, with mouthpiece off, I take one or two quick firm draws to suck material out. I don't put finely ground material in, ever.
If really bad, you might try removing the chamber screen to clean below it. I've not had to do that.
Best of luck!

I use a coarse grind with almost all my vapes so it’s not that. Up until the 2nd RMA I use a qtip to swab after every use and the hopper gets emptied after every use immediately so it’s not that either. The hopper doesn’t get used at home ever so it’s not being overworked by any means and I only use it dry. Honestly it seems like those of us who got shitty units from the start never quite get a proper function no matter how many tiles they claim it’s repaired. Anyway thanks for all the tips and trying to help.

are you using the same herb... is it dry as the other herb you used before... is it cured the same way...
if it is the same batch of herb and exactly as dry you can compare the abv and say something about it...

the color of abv is sometimes missleading in my opinion... some herb does not get as dark as others...

Calm Consistency
After about 14 months of using my GH it seemed to be slowing down. Hits took longer to milk but still seemed really hot, even tho the herb wasn't getting dark. Batteries were cutting out early.

Cleaned my backend. Rotated the temp dial while pressing down on it hard. Blew our debris I saw when I spun the temp dial.

Good as new. She refuses to die.

My theory is that the “honey” that is left behind from the vapor slowly clogs up the temp sensor. So depending on your weed and relative humidity in the air, it’s going to get dirtier faster than others. Only way to clean it is to get under that bottom screen.

It's so, so sad. This device is at the market since some years and most postings here are about advices to push the timeline for a case of RMA to a later point.... (btw 3rd hopper in 11 months w/o regular use and a lot of maintainance)

I give them one more year. If they shouldn't have solve their issues up to then their reputation will be so down nearly nobody wants to buy a hopper anymore cause of permant unreliability and then your lifetime warranty will be fucked.

ordered 1 ss GH the 31st October from HL, they sent out just today and only after my email asking what was going on ...the never answered but finally sent a package, 8 days after...doesn't start in a good way.... really really disappointed...
that does suck.
They took a while to send my mates when he bought it a while back.
His is still going strong and he's super happy with it.
Hopefully you get a good one. I got my blue one back today, it's dead. Lent it to a friend. Going to send both of mine back and hopefully get two proper working units returned...
These things are definitely worth it for the convenience, but they can sometimes have a right good go at being inconvenient.

Hop along for my Hopper story, I had originally pre-ordered in Jan of 16' and slowly had my delivery date pushed back to July so I canceled my original pre-order and said I would wait and see how it played out.

Recently I was yearning for new vape and planned to get this and the FW4 due to severe and terminal VAS. So I pulled the trigger and HL had mine delivered within a week with the PFE and extra battery, much better than my first experience with HL delivery dates.

Ill post a quick first-impression below.

Performance is above average with the PFE installed dry or with water, I do prefer the PFE over the OG front end just for the better air flow. Dry i use it on 3.5-4 and on H2O I use it full power no probs or combustion so far.

Battery life is below average with the new batteries only lasting 1.5-2 packs max which may be due to me still learning temp settings and leaving the unit on longer than needed during a draw. I am still perfecting the proper hopping technique and ordered a total of 5 batteries and a LUC v4 charger to keep me satiated.

Taste is great either dry or through water, I found my self needing to "deep throat"(technical term) the vape a little bit more to keep away from the heat but I haven't burned myself or found it to be the scalding beast some users reported it to be dry, maybe I just know to be careful around the power of a 45w heater an inch from my mouth hole but I haven't found the heat of the unit or the air that bothersome for solo or duo use turning the unit off between hits dry or just ripping it hard on H20. I do find the taste probably a step below the FF2 and the Vapor Brothers but for a stealthy portable I find it exceeds my expectations.

So far I am happy with my purchase and felt good to support HL by ordering their battery charger and S/S case that may or may not ship in Dec 17' or 18' only time will tell. For now I will be happy using the LUC v4 for charging and will just continue hopping along...
