Underdog Log Vapes

Man, it's been a really long time since I've been here. I just wanted to come back and say how much I've loved and continue to love my underdog.

It's the absolutely perfect tool for using at home. I recently had a fairly debilitating rotator cuff injury, and nothing helped me sleep better than my underdog and a glass piece. I continue to be blown away by the efficiency of the NonG. I can hit .1 of a gram six or seven times through a small bubbler and milk it at least twice in that process. I know a lot of people use them as one hitters, but I'm cheap with my herb. So sue me.

Even when it's not being used, it's still a beautiful piece of art. Thanks for making such a cool product! And again, to whoever donated $100 towards my purchase and let me get my African Milkwood UD instead of a (still gorgeous) cracked walnut, thank you so much.

Finally, here's a few pictures!

Edit: imgur is weird
I own 8 UD's, but damn.........that is fucking beautiful!!:cheers::rockon:

ha, i had figured as much re: decorating.. i still haven't decided how i feel about it personally. perhaps someday, if life continues to wear hard on my poor older dogs. my locust is just too beautiful to touch & i'm gonna do my best to keep it that way haha.

i always use wall plug->VVPS->extension->dog. i dont actually turn mine down (honestly i just move the herb further out, i like a hot running log) but i keep using the VVPS so i know if its stopped drawing power. unfortunately, as i've tested my new cable, i think the issue is my log itself. the readout goes back up to 12.1 as if its not plugged in.. with this cord its easier to wiggle it into a way that it connects and heats for the most part. but. :( unfortunately i cant see mailing my poor pups in before a few weeks out.. at least my econodog is (knock on wood..) unstoppable! :peace:

Here are my initial thoughts:

I'm loving the NonG stem and the stainless steel stem, lite. They are great for microdosing which is the reason I bought the UD. I only put in enough to cover the screen and it extracts everything in one hit. The hits with the NonG are very smooth through water. That's why sometimes I use the stainless steel stem just so that I can feel the vapor a bit more. So I'm alternating between those two so far.

Before this, I was using a VapCap M and OG as my daily drivers. I would typically fill the M about half way or less. I would only fill the M up the whole way if I wanted to get pretty baked. I moved the screen on my OG so that the bowl was really small. With the UD, I'm able to use even smaller amounts than with my VapCap OG which is what I was going for.

The first bowl I packed using the short GonG I combusted. But I turned the temp down with the VVPS and added the extension cord and haven't combusted since. I'm back to using it at 12.0 again on the VVPS without any combustion, so I think using the extension cord cooled it off enough by itself.

I guess the only issues I'm really having with it is that I'm finding it hard to really milk my bong up really white and I'm finding that it doesn't burn evenly using larger amounts. I think my issue with trying to milk the bong with my short GonG is that there's too much air getting through. So I'm thinking if I add an O-ring, it will restrict the airflow and give me denser vapor. Any O-ring advice? It still worked well and gave me a big hit, don't get me wrong... but I think there's just a bit too much air getting through for my tastes when I'm looking to take a fat rip.

My other issue is that if I pack a little more into the bowl of a stainless steel tip, the top part gets charred pretty black, but there's still some light green and light brown stuff near the bottom. With my VapCap, everything got roasted pretty evenly. So with a bigger bowl, I stir it after taking a big hit... and it looks like there's still some material in there that isn't 100% used up... but when I vape more hits, I don't really get much. So when using a stainless steel tip, I'm finding it's not even really worth it to stir it and take a second hit if I feel there's some left over.

When I used the GonG with a descent amount in the bowl, I got 2 pretty big hits... the top would be pretty dark, but the stuff in the middle and the bottom would be still be a bit green. I stir it up, and I get a little more vapor, but not a whole lot.

So I guess I'm looking for any tips on how to improve the extraction. Should I lower the temperature a bit for bigger bowls and try to stretch out my session a bit? Or is the best thing just to pack thin layers and reload once or twice instead of packing a bigger bowl?

Definitely lower the temp, start at 9 where it's a bit cooler then work up from there. The nongs and SS stems are basically one hitters. I can milk my 8" bubbler, but it doesn't milk my 12" bong. Also pack using the straw method. You'd be surprised to see how efficient the UD is at cooking the least amount of material, and have it at a loose pack. There's probably not enough air flow to reach the bottom of your stem to cook that area. Once you get everything dialed in, you'll be even more in love haha.

So I'm having a lot more success now with larger amounts packed in the bowl. I'm using the NonG for now and trying to get that dialed in perfect since that's mainly what I'll be using. I really needed to slow my draw speed substantially.

I have my VVPS set to 11.0 with no extension cord (SC2 core, figured walnut wood). I'm taking very long and slow draws through a small water bong (the cheap 14mm banger hanger from dhgate). In my first breath, I'm not really drawing in any vapor, then when I start my second draw, vapor starts to pour in. Then when I'm out of breath, I cover the mouth piece of my bong with my chin and exhale... then I inhale again.... the bong stays fairly full of vapor... and exhale again... then I do one more inhale, pull the UD off, pull the stem and clear the chamber. I am certainly very impressed with the amount of vapor it was able to pull off that tiny amount. The whole time I'm inhaling, vapor keeps pouring in.

So I'm filling the NonG about half way up, and I get 3 pretty good sized hits out of it. The ABV is all black or dark brown with no combustion. It's vaping all the way through and there's no green left whatsoever, so problem solved on that front.

How is my technique from what I described?

I'm really happy with the performance as is, but I'm sure there's room for improvement and I practice and experiment more.

If I want thicker vapor and to vape the bowl faster, should I try going a little hotter and drawing a little faster?

I prefer to take my herb as close to combustion as possible without stepping over the line and leaving very dark ABV. I combusted it once trying my UD without a VVPS or extension cord... and it combusted pretty quickly... so full power is definitely too hot.

edit: just tried it at 11.2 and it worked really well. got vapor after pulling for just a second or two. I pulled my dog off a bit early because I was worried it might combust... but I think right around here is perfect for me. I'll try 11.1 and 11.3 and see how it goes.

Just a quick little PSA- please always use your extension cords! :) The biggest point of failure is the little metal wires inside the cords breaking from being bent, twisted, and moved. When you use your extension cord, you limit most of the movement fatigue to the little extension cord, and protect your more expensive VVPS and power supply.

Happy Vaping!

For all the cloud chasers, pick up an Oversized 18/19mm Nong next time they are available. This is my preferred water pipe adapter and underdog accessory.

The OS bowl is huge (similiar to the direct draw glass stem) and packs a punch. The Nong heats up faster than my Gong and it's easier to use (the short 14mm Gong is still really long, IMO, and no adapter for my 18mm glass pieces).

The vapor can be a bit harsh when I have the voltage turned up, but still super flavorful.

First pull is terps and milk. Second pull still terps and milk. Third or fourth pull gets clouds but with less flavour (I generally stop at 2 rips - love them terps).

nice milking vids

i'll keep my eye out for the oversized 18/19mm NonG... looks really nice for taking bigger rips.

do you always keep your VVPS set at around 11.0 and also use the extension cord?

i'm able to milk my bong up pretty good with the 14mm NonG. Matrix Sidecar is on the way from China which i'm really excited to try out with the underdog since it's a bit bigger than what I have now.

I cleaned everything for the first time tonight. The UD didn't need any cleaning and the stems were all fairly easy to clean. The screens were a bit gunked up because I combused a few times... but I should be able to keep them cleaner from now on as i doubt i'll combust anymore. So maintenance for this is pretty simple which is awesome.

These baby-bottle brushes are great for cleaning stems, the tips have a few bristles that point straight out, so after soaking my stems (with screens still installed) in 99% isopropyl for a few minutes, I dip a brush into the iso, gently push it through each end of the stem and twist around when I hit resistance. Really good for getting rid of those troublesome little specks.

The 18/19mm OS Nong is awesome. I have a back up just in case, lol.

I still get nice milky hits from the 14mm Nong and the 14mm short Gong but prefer the punch of the OS.

With that said, my buddy finds the OS uber harsh and always grabs the 14mm Nong when he's over for a vape session. He finds it really smooth and prefers the smaller load.

The Matrix sidecar is an awesome water pipe. Did you choose the left or right side for the mouth piece.

I always use the vvps and extension cord, but the voltage I have been choosing varies. I was rocking 10.5 to 10.8 for a while. Lately it's been 10.8 to 11.2.

I get a full extraction as low as 10.0v but find it easier to run back to back to back to back bowls at the higher voltage (the dog seems to stay warmer).

Perhaps the change in weather has something to do with it.

I cleaned my Nong yesterday as well. No soak, just poured a little ISO into the Nong and proceeded to shake it for a few minutes. Cleaned most of the screen gunk and all the resin that was trapped inside. Maybe 2-3 minutes all in.

I underbutter weekly to keep things looking sharp!!

Thanks for the reply.

I got the 20cm sidecar, left neck, no logo. I imagined holding the UD in my right hand (since I'm right handed) so I figured the left neck would be the way to go. Hope I made the correct decision there.

I've been keeping my UD in the garage and it's getting colder out. I think I might have to move it inside when the temperature drops a bit more.

I also went left on my sidecar. It's the only piece I have that had an option for mouth piece location.

When given the option, I don't want a logo on my glass. Always takes away from the piece, IMO

figured i'd return with my findings after 'dabbling' ;) around with concentrates for the first time. my previous post i had linked Peyton Penn's video on how to use concentrates with the UD.

i made several attempts on a few different occasions to recreate what he had showed in the video but i didn't have much success. however, i did find that if i just place some wax oil into a tiny piece of cotton, balled it up, and place it on my NonG, it worked more effectively. i didn't change my original NonG stem in anyway iin comparison to if i would have vaped flower instead. cranked up the VVPS approx 1.0V from what i normally vape flower at, and im able to easily pull huge clouds from the wax oil cotton ball technique.

in no way am i discrediting Peyton Penn's technique, it clearly works from the video he showed but for some reason it wasn't working for me. just putting this out there for anyone who may be curious about trying to use concentrates with their UD :peace::2c:

Hello fellow fuckers!

I have just had my second go round with an Underdog and it was lovely.

My micro came in a trade with a long nylon stem and a wall plug.

On my first run the full temp was too high and I teetered on combustion.

So, through the profoundly helpful @underdogette, I ordered the vvps, a wall plug and an extension and received them today.

Started at 10.5 and over three loads progressed to 11.5.

Tremendous experience. So freaking easy and replicable. This will be a wonderful poker night addition.

Thanks for everyone's input in this thread. It helped painlessly break my UD cherry.

You're gonna need a bigger boat dog. A micro might recover fast enough between hits to serve a group, but it'll be pretty hard on it, shorten its lifespan. But shy of massive breakdown of the wood, it could probably be rebuilt if @underdog keeps micro-core service parts around the shop.

If it were up to me, though, any excuse for a new addition to the pack. :) You've already got the VVPS and a new power supply and extension, you might be able to save a few bucks if you ask @underdogette to exclude them from an order for a full-size Underdog that can handle heavier duty.
