OK... order went through! Got the Figured Walnut with SC2 core. Beautiful looking wood.

Amazing customer service! Very happy with my purchase.

I researched a long time before finally deciding on an underdog. I want big hits using small amounts and the underdog seems like the best combination of efficiency and power. I'm smoking at home 95% of the time and I like vaping through water bongs... so this seems like the way to go. Sounds like the purchase will basically pay for itself over time due to the efficiency.

Since I got $10 off shipping, I picked up a 4th stem (the stainless steel stem, light) to go with my NonG 14mm, GonG 14mm long, and GonG 14mm short.

I heard that the GonG long doubles as a direct draw stem, so I went with that one in case i break my short GonG.

Though I'm expecting to primarily use the NonG with a water piece.

I'll post some photos when my dog arrives. My real dog always lets me know when the mailman comes around.

You will be very happy with your decision! An Underdog will be perfect for your usage style like it is perfect for so many of us

I am mostly a short gong sorta guy, but be sure to experiment with all of the variables - stem, voltage, screen placement, load size, grind, glass pairing, etc. in your hunt to find the perfect Underdog experience! It may take a little dialing-in, but it will be dead simple once you get there.

Also consider trying j-hooks or dry bubblers with your Dog just for a couple more variables! :peace:

Welcome to the pack, @GoombaTroop. I've never seen a figured walnut Underdog I didn't like, ask your wife if she can take a picture of your face when you unwrap it. :)

I have the Matrix sidecar you've got coming, too, it's my favourite piece to use with my logs, gives you a great view of that milk.

tl;dr: I got another question. What is a good portable battery power supply to use if you want to take your underdog on the go? And is there a link to a good underdog stealth/portability/on-the-go setup?

-----------------

So I ordered the underdog because I vape 95% at home. The other 5% of the time that I smoke/vape, I go to downtown Toronto to watch Leafs hockey games at sports bars. I like to smoke/vape before heading into the bar and during the two 20 minute intermissions.

Toronto is a bit of a unique city when it comes to smoking bud. It's going to be legal across Canada in 2018, but who knows if you'll be allowed to smoke on the sidewalk. I think it's technically illegal to smoke a cigarette on the sidewalk, but I don't think it's enforced. At the moment, it's not really a big deal at all to smoke a joint downtown outside a bar. However, I still don't really like skunking up an area and then going back inside the bar reeking like weed. I mean, I do it all the time, so it doesn't bother me that much... but I would prefer to vape where there isn't much of a smell, and I try to stick only to vaping if possible as I prefer it to combustion.

I have a VapCap M and a MFLB. Both of these aren't great for trying to use outside a bar with a buddy or two. The MFLB just takes too long, especially if you're trying to share. The M just looks too sketchy trying to heat the thing with a torch. Plus it's kind of hard to hear the click if it's noisy. I was looking at picking up a used Arizer Air for $100 off Kijiji... but I wanted my underdog first and it's a bit of a waste of money to buy an Air if i'm only going to use it a few times a month.

While I ordered my underdog to use as a desktop... I'm wondering if there are some good portability options? I normally take a small backpack with me downtown anyways just to carry a water bottle and so that my pockets aren't so full. So it wouldn't be that big a deal to throw in the underdog and a battery power supply. I'm hoping I could just turn it on while I'm on the subway and be good to go for the next 3 or 4 hours. Do the portable battery power supplies last this long or will I have to turn them off when not in use to conserve the battery?

Ideally, I would have my underdog heating up inside my backpack during the game in preparation for the intermission... but I'm guessing I can't just have it loose in there as I don't want to burn the inside of my backpack. I'm wondering if I could maybe use some sort of canister with a power cord hole to hold my underdog while it's heating inside my backpack? I suppose these things look so nice that I could basically just set the thing down on my table in the bar and have it heat up out in the open. Not like anyone really cares or would even assume that it's a weed device.

It's obviously never going to be as discrete as using something like a Pax... but any other tips or suggestions for using this as a portable vape? I almost wonder if you could rig up a setup where the dog is inside a mcdonalds cup or whatever and just use a glass direct draw stem instead of a straw.

Lots of options in the world of battery packs.. we've used quite a few different models that run on 18650 li-ion batteries like the discontinued QD185-TY - there are probably current models out there somewhere. The nicest thing about these is you can select specific voltages (within it's range, in .5v increments) They do require that you buy your own batteries since they are just the enclosure.
https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Charger-Battery-External-Display/dp/B01B98J67O

Then there are no frills packs that you can use with the Travel VVPS (just make sure you don't exceed 15v and that the output is tip-positive - most are) These are nice because the unit IS the battery, nothing else to buy. https://www.amazon.com/Fashion-Portable-6800mAh-Rechargeable-Battery/dp/B00R3VDL46

Lastly you have units built around a battery but with the electronics for various voltage outputs, etc included. Kind of a mix of the above 2 styles but you would still need to use the Travel VVPS to adjust down from 12v. https://www.amazon.com/XTPower-MP-10000-External-10000mAh-included/dp/B00935L44E

As far as the usage goes you can (typically) get 3-6 hours out of the above power packs. That said I'd just power one on 5 minutes (or so) before you want to use it and it should be ready by then. You don't want to leave your Dog powered up in an enclosed environment as it will overheat and damage itself without ventilation. Hope this helps!

Actually I might have a used QD185 that I used to use for backpacking laying around if you want it.. but it doesn't have batteries and those can run almost as much as the other type of units so it might not be worth the trouble. Your call. I think Underdogette could include it in the package without it affecting the weight/price.

Thanks for the reply. Good call on not leaving the vape on in an enclosed environment. No need to include your used QD185 as I don't own any 18650 batteries. I'll probably buy a battery pack at some point. Would be useful for charging my phone and stuff too.

After putting it off for too long, I decided that today was the day to make some ABV coconut oil. I'm doing it sous vide, with 28g of ABV and about 250g of coconut oil (roughly two sticks of butter). It probably won't be super-potent, but it'll give me a rough idea of how much oil to use next time.

L13IcrS.jpg

It's sitting in the water bath, going to give it a couple of hours, freeze it, reseal (the dry ABV had a lot of air in between crumbs, it puffed up the bag once the oil melted; I can get a proper vac seal once it's a solid mass with the oil), and give it another couple of hours tomorrow. I water-cured the ABV for three days to cut down on taste/odour.

I'm still on topic, every gram of that ABV came out of a NonG. :)

@GoombaTroop I saw you mentioned you live in Toronto. Me too!!

Just a heads up customs has been all over packages coming from the USA lately.

I ordered my underdog over the birthday sale, and had an additional $65 in duty/tax/handling fees when it arrived.

They even dinged me on a few accessories I had ordered after the fact for 24 USD with another $15 duty/tax/handling.

I'm sorry. I've neglected my dog since catching serious pyromania and DIYphilia. Consequently, I decided to reacquaint tonight. It was good.

It's always nice to get back in touch with vapes I've neglected; to approach with a fresh perspective. I think I'll do more of it whenever I get my ass off this couch.

But it's fun to play with fire, too.

Really fun to play with fire.

What I think I learned last night by using my Underdog for the first time in a while is that I really like all my vapes; including my DIY stuff. I guess the main reason why I haven't used the dog lately is because I'm so weak. I could really use a water tool. Just lifting the dog to my mouth for every hit has become very difficult for me. Anyone who may have watched any of my recent videos may have noticed I almost always have at least one arm attached to something solid; like the counter/stove in the above video.

@Aimless Ryan The DIY stove top set up seemed like overkill. But it makes sense now.

There has to be a safer way though.

That huge glass stem is super cool.

A bubbler would help, but your still going to have to lift the UD to the bubbler and off again to empty a bowl. Might be more work than it's worth.

The stainless steel lite weighs significantly less than the glass stem, IMO.

Those who have used your UD with concentrates, what have you found to be the best way to go about this?

I have access to concentrates now and have been curious try them out with my UD through a water piece. I found Peyton Penn's video and was wondering if this was the best option or if anyone has found a better way.

I like Peyton's method, I never saw that video

Not sure about what's best but I usually just stick a little cotton ball on top of the normal screen, just enough to soak in a little concentrates but not enough to mess up the air flow.. you don't want it too airy either..

I put a small amount of herb in the 14mm gong, drop some crumble on top and enjoy.

Heya Dogs all this talk about setups for concentrates made me realize we have another dozen or so Alphas sitting in storage. Still not sure if we'll make Alphas a regular production item so these might be the last available ever.

If anyone wants one I was thinking I'd slash the price down to $225 so they don't just sit here gathering dust. They would come with 3 stems (choice of Direct Draw Nylon OS, 18mm OS and 18 XL) and the Travel VVPS and standard kit stuff. Free shipping as well.

We're getting ready to leave on some extended travels in about 2 weeks time so we'd need to get these sent on their way in the next week or two. While we're traveling regular packages will still be being shipped but not stuff from storage as our office gal doesn't have access to that. :peace:

If you want one send Underdogette a message post-haste and let her know so she can set one aside for you. Most are Black Walnut but I think a couple are Cherry.

Man, it's been a really long time since I've been here. I just wanted to come back and say how much I've loved and continue to love my underdog.

It's the absolutely perfect tool for using at home. I recently had a fairly debilitating rotator cuff injury, and nothing helped me sleep better than my underdog and a glass piece. I continue to be blown away by the efficiency of the NonG. I can hit .1 of a gram six or seven times through a small bubbler and milk it at least twice in that process. I know a lot of people use them as one hitters, but I'm cheap with my herb. So sue me.

Even when it's not being used, it's still a beautiful piece of art. Thanks for making such a cool product! And again, to whoever donated $100 towards my purchase and let me get my African Milkwood UD instead of a (still gorgeous) cracked walnut, thank you so much.

Finally, here's a few pictures!

Here's the finished product from the raw materials I posted the other day, two two-hour cooks, adding a tablespoon of lecithin for the second cook. It still hasn't fully cooled, hence the bubbles and whorls.

buCsOeO.jpg

Water curing definitely made an enormous difference, the colour is way closer to 'canna butter green' than 'abv brown,' and the oil still smells like coconut oil (though you do get a whiff of skunk when you open the container).

Save your ABV!

I only got into buying concentrate recently because I couldn't find anyone with bud. Luckily I had some hemp fiber I picked up for just such an emergency and it works great in the NonG.
