Inception portable dab rig from e-cig gear

This was inspired by the one-hitter thread, and more details can be found there.

The whole rig.

Vaporesso's Transformer RDA atop Athena's Pride 75 mod with a heady glass top for monitoring hit progress.

Under the hood.

ffk04MA.jpg

A level 3 inception coil, mounted vertically. It's a coil within a coil within a coil, all on one wire. For each "level", the wire is bent back and wrapped over the previous level. (Not as difficult as it looks, and what else is one to do between hits?) These can also be mounted horizontally.

As you can see, the coil heats from the inside out. The outer level is much cooler than the inner - like the passage of time in dreams. :whoa:

It's easy to load, just smear concentrate on top and gently pulse at low wattage. The wire is food grade, low carbon stainless steel. One wire is wrapped around four parallel inner wires to provide plenty of surface area for the concentrate to soak into.

Then crank 'er up and let 'er rip! It's a concentrated, deceptively small hit that breaks through stubborn tolerance issues, leaving nothing behind. Who wants to try? :spliff:

A simpler version uses a vortex coil wrapped with the same wire around a conical dab tool tip. With temperature control, this produces more flavorful, less concentrated hits. Just fill it like an ice cream cone!

The latest version.

A standard (level 2) inception coil. For vertical builds, both leads at the same end is a feature, not a bug. Vandy's Govad has both bottom and side airflow, which seems ideal for a vertical mount with the coil hanging directly above the tube. No leaking, plenty of flavor, same concentrated hit.

With a heady glass tip. Hits surprisingly quick, so it helps to watch the vapor pass through the tip. Looks like there's a bit of reclaim. It's easily portable, but this is more of a desktop mod. No need for temp control, so maybe a mech tube mod on the go.

This has completely replaced dabbing. If anyone wants to try, happy to drop a coil in the mail (but they're easy to wrap). Should be customizable for most two-post (or postless) RDAs.

This looks awesome! For those of us not too savvy, could a setup like this be used with say, a cuboid mod box?

Now that's sweet. I've been holding out on delving into the world of concentrate portables for a while, but the one idea I always come back to is building an RDA coil. Do you know of any drip tips that fit into 10/14/18mm joints? Looks like a great solution for water filtered hits away from home.

Thanks! This should work with any battery. Generally use 40 W, but could use even less. Plan to try a mech mod next.

Do you prefer this over the Vandy Vape Mesh?

Yes. The Mesh RDA works fine and is very easy to use, but these coils deliver a uniquely intense hit. How do you like the Mesh?

@2clicker worked out water filtering in the one-hitter thread. IME, don't miss it. The hit is deceptively small, not like a milky dab. It's intense but never cough.

With a dab locked and loaded. To avoid splatter, it's best to soak the concentrate into the coil with very low wattage (~4 W).

Recommend this tutorial for wrapping the coils. Cut a metal tube from a telescoping rod. It's easier than it looks, even kind of fun. The most challenging part is dealing with the shorts, but once the coil fires properly, it's fine for numerous hits. If you have an RDA that might work, happy to drop a coil in the mail (PM). Anxious to get another opinion.

Only use it for eJuice at the moment, got some buds curing which I will squish using a 'Tarik' (I know they are crap but it's all I got right now) in a couple of weeks once the cure is complete.

I'll give it a go then and let ya know.

For eJuice it's not bad at all. Really easy to wire up and wick as long as you get the wick tight in the mesh.

Assume for concentrate use that the wick isn't needed?

Thanks, @supershredderdan! Love your Divine Castle.

Still in love. Improves with practice. The goal is a small, dense, warm puff. Like being knocked out with a feather.

A mechanical interpretation with the Immortalizer atop Wotofo's Phantom. Longtime fan of single coil, bottom air-flow RDAs.

The coil is in the opposite orientation to the above. Doesn't seem to make a difference. An especially small coil, only three wraps per level. More of a bun. Feeds on crumbs. Let's call it the "cinnamin roll".

Is this the end?

JaPn2gF.jpg

A level four inception coil. What else is there to build? All the features of its predecessors plus it takes an XL dab.

Forgive trippy photoshopping. One hit and Reverend Jim's face is frozen on. Not even sure this was vapor. More like some kind of plasma.

Inspired by Tendou's fanciful Tokugawa. Bottom and side airflow like the Govad, without those bulky clamps taking up space. It's all about the space. Like a shakuhachi. Or a car's cigarette lighter.

Two posts are going spare. :sherlock:

Thanks! Still using this coil daily - cleaned ultrasonically. Nothing like it, IME. Not with e-juice, though, with solid concentrate soaked into it at very low power. Seems to work best with solids. With sap, it can splatter a bit if overloaded. Even so, it's easy to reclaim.

Regarding gear, the mechanical version above is really nothing but resistance wire connected to a battery - almost directly. Push the battery up to make contact with the 510 pin and away she goes at full, unregulated power. Otherwise, prefer RDA's designed for single coil builds and lots of space between the dual posts. Like bottom airflow best with additional side airflow a plus. But other configurations can also work.

The more power, the better. Currently using 150W. This produces the most concentrated hit instantly, after which it's powered down long before the coil starts to glow. But less power works, too - wouldn't go below 40W.

Cool with dabbing. This was intended for portability, but it hits so hard, there's no going back.

The only thing that's a little annoying is concentrate crumbs dropping through the coil to the base. (They're easy enough to avoid or shake out - just going for perfection). Tried adding a heated floor - a stove-top coil around the bottom airflow tube. Got both coils firing, but couldn't match resistance between a simple wire coil and something as crazy as this. The stove-top looked like it was about to melt long before the inception ramped up. More trouble than it's worth.

NEW COIL!

Another Level 4 Inception in Tendou's Tokugawa RDA. This time, tri-braid wire. Tri-braid is flat. This time, instead of wrapping tubes, tried keeeping wire flat, perpendicular to the axis to expose more of those nooks and crannies.

DvGf23Z.jpg

After about 25mg finest cream caramel shatter is soaked into the center of the wick at low power. Like it's being held in a fist right above the airflow. At 150W, all of that vaporizes in under a second as the coil ramps up. A small, warm, tasty hit and :ko:. Best performance ever.

This atomizer costs about 65 USD. The GOVAD costs about 25. Kind of large and small size. If offered pre-installed in one of these RDAs, any interest?

You know you want some. :p Resistance is futile. :borg:

Necessity is a mother, or something like that. Limited by 13cm length of wire shot, wrapped this exceptionally tight inception coil (let's call it level 3.5) with alien wire. Wicks even better with less wire, so it ramps up faster for more flavor. Need some mohawk alien and clapception wire bad. A clapception inception! It would probably work especially well, too, but reluctant to learn wire building.

At a certain point, when soaking the dab into the coil, the oil decarboxylates (bubbles) all at once. When the foam sinks back into the coil, it's ready to hit. This was meant to be. :myday:

Thanks - something that works this well deserves to be pretty.

Coil-building has become quite artistic, which isn't surprising when you consider it's one of the skills used in making jewelry.

Some incredible builds starting at 1:04.

Screw the decarboxylation. With gentle 10W pulses, shatter that's been vacuum purged for a week

drapes elegantly over the coils.

About 25mg. Hits hard - and tasty - as Hell!

Same coil as above going strong at 2 weeks - used as frequently as possible :ko: (with regular ultrasonic blasts). Wire costs 5 USD pre-built.

never saw this thread. seems this forum may be a better spot for the one hitter quitter thread compared to the concentrates forum. we have a few DIY portable dab rig threads in dif forums it seems.

Yeah, the one-hitter thread was dormant, so started separate threads to avoid multiple posts. Maybe they can be merged. For now, any interested visitors should check out exciting new inception developments (including temperature control) in the one-hitter thread.

@2clicker, you can scroll up for more pics of Vandy's Govad RDA.
