Chosing the right vap

Hi guys,

I’ve been smoking regular for almost 6 years :)
Now everyone tells vaps are better, healthier. Could it be true?
The thing is I want to buy one, but I don’t know which one to chose.
I need a portable one, but with a very small chamber for the herb.
I don’t want to place 0.5g and smoking all at once.
What would you advise?

Thanks

Hi there and welcome! You are just a tiny step away of a better future! :)
- Do you have a budget in mind?
- Any materials that you prefer? (Glass, Wood, Plastic, Metal)
- Portable or desktop?
- Does it have to be "stealth"?

That would surely help with the possible advises!

Hello :)
I think the boudget should be somewhere 100- 300 usd.
Ideally I like the stilish ones, so no wood for me :)
It should be a portable one and doesn’t need to be “stealthy”.
But the main think is, the chamber of herb to be small, or adjustable, so I’m not forced to place a lot of herb in it :)
Thank you so much for the support!

Smoking for 6 years, I'd say you'd probably have a favourite way?

To transition to vaping, you're going to want a powerful portable that is most similar to your favourite way to smoke.

For eg. joints, bongs, pipes etc.

I just got done watching this video, and I think it'd be worth it to check it out.
Either of these vapes, although wood, offer a pretty decent experience.

I've been using the Grasshopper, which isn't recommended for first time buyers (unreliable, although lifetime warranty, lots of issues. A working one is a very good vaporizer, but is best used with glass bongs or at least some kind of cooling device).

I'd recommend a DynaVap to anyone who enjoys a joint

But there are a lot of different products, too many to choose from. But I recommend trying to find one that is most similar to however you have been smoking.

If you dont mind spending the cash, the crafty is a very good portable device. I am not sure if they finally have all the kinks worked out. I had to replace mine under warranty 3-4 times (lost count) but it was always replaced with a brand new unit for free. They have little loading capsules that work great with smaller loads. I always get excellent extraction out of my crafty.

I have two Crafty vapes (bought one used) and they are stealthy and great for on the go vaping. I don't use the loading capsules but just put a concentrate pad on top of the load (even as little as .05 grams) before closing the cooling unit. Good taste, great draw, easy to keep clean if you use capsules or pad. I only get about 4 sessions per battery charge cycle since they are driven by one 18650 battery. I have only had one RMA so far; but my usage is light.

I recently bought a Solo 2 and now use it exclusively around the home. It is driven by two 18650 batteries and I get 10-12 sessions per charge cycle. It has great taste, good draw, and couldn't be easier to clean since it's load is placed in a stem and then inserted. You can load a maximum of .2 grams, or as little as you want. Less is more because a small load is easy to draw from. If I could only keep one vape it would be the Solo 2.

The Arizer Air 2 just came out and it's battery (one 18650) is replaceable. If I could only buy one vape then it might be the Air 2 for me. It is smaller than the Solo 2 and would be a reasonable on the go vape with pre-loaded stems. I assume the taste and draw are similar to the Solo 2.

Searched for youtube, seems like a nice german quality unit.
I wonder, if the actual hit that you breath inside the throut is cooled down first, or you get it directly at the 90d celius, which is the lowest heating set.

Now the paranoia inside asks which temperature will go out from vap inside the throut?

I do not own any Arizer products but I have read enough about them to know they are a solid choice. The Solo II or the Air II would be my suggestion going by what you are looking to get from a vape. As @Little Bill said, they make quality products and the Solo or Air covers all your bases...portability, microdose size bowls if you want, and reliability. Like I said I dont own either but it's not too hard to see they have lots of fans, and thats usually for a good reason.

@ctdtst there is no need for paranoia when so many others are using these products successfully. Just be sure and get a vape with good temperature regulation such as the Arizer vapes. The first time start vaping at a low temp say 160c/320f. You probably won't get much vapor but maybe some taste. After a couple draws increase the temp 5c or 10f and draw again. Keep doing this and you will feel when you have gone far enough. Everybody finds their own preference. Your taste may even change over time as you adjust from smoking to vaping which as you said is much healthier. It's also more efficient (less expensive).

I usually start vaping at 165c and go to 185c in steps of 10c. Some FCers vape at higher temps to make sure to use all the goodies. I just save my ABV for use in smoothies or on waffles. But soon enough you will find what works best for you. Happy vaping. :peace:

It is cooled down suprisingly, it's a warm vapor for sure but it's not so warm that it irritates me. Full disclosure though, there were some members here who needed to run it through a whip tube into their water pipe to smooth out the vapor. If the unit interests you I would suggest to read through the threads, the mighty is another portable though about 1/3 larger than the crafty.

From a smokers perspective, I think that's not a concern here.

Even the GH, which is genuinely hot and harsh is generally enjoyed by smokers.
When I tried the Mighty, which I'd recommend over the Crafty, I could easily clear the bowl in one giant hit straight from a water pipe adapter to mouth sans cooling unit and it was substantially cooler than the hopper.

The thing I'd point out again, is to match the style of smoking to vaping.
The Mighty/Crafty are session vapes with bad longevity and big prices.
The Arizer portables aren't super powerful and are also best used in session style.

The DynaVaps could replace joints but not bong hits without effort.

If you want to replace usage, it needs to be matched otherwise it's likely you'll revert back to smoking and have just wasted money.
That's what happened to me with the MFLB back in 2011, I smoked until 2014 when I got a desktop that actually worked for me.
I still think the portable market is lacking a bit but it's certainly better than smoking at least

Get a Vapcap.

The basic model is a mere $50. They are super efficient with your bud. There is no requirement to load up the chamber. I usually load .015 grams cause that's the amount that gets me where I like to be.

Efficient. Without a doubt the most attractive portable on the market. Modular build that let's you customize your look and function. Tiny, the size of a cigarette. It handles bud, concentrates and hash with ease. No need to charge, replace or manage batteries. You can heat it with just about any heat source.

Highly recommended!

You might consider one of the "on-demand" vapes. With those, the herb burns only when you are inhaling so they are perfect for microdosing. You can use a very small amount of herb and still not have to use it up all at one time. I tend to put a pinch of herb in my vapes because I don't like stirring. The vapcap has already been recommended. Some that use batteries instead of butane are the mistvape, tubo, and milaana. The problem with those is that I think you don't want wood. Not sure why. The tubo, which is my favorite, is probably less stylish although the software is always updated but the mvt looks good.
There's also the supreme which people love but which intimidated me because it used a larger butane torch than I'm comfortable with.

I'll go on the record and say the vapcap is amazing to have as a backup vape. It's not my main, but it's great cause it's easier to refill a lighter than swap batteries when I'm high lol

The bowl is pretty small to begin with, and most models have an assistant bowl, but they are unnecessary. Put as little as you wish in there or cram it in. Grind it or don't. Your results will vary, but it's all a blast to use.
I use my log Vapes way more... But if I were to replace my log with a portable... On demand, regulated heat, replaceable batteries... Maybe firewood 4? I had a firewood 3 and I broke it changing batteries but that isn't an issue with the newer one.

Do you prefer to sip on a joint or cheef the small bowl in one hit? Most portable Vapes are intended for a session. For me, that's not my preference most of the time.

Why don't you check out the Milaana? A great heavy hitting portable vaporizer. Also the VapCap sounds like it might be something you'd be interested in. Something heavy hitting that reminds you of smoking. I love the Solo and it's not a heavy hitter but it's an easy vaporizer to use. It gets the job done for me. You can hit those high temps which would remind you of smoking.

You will have to do some due diligence and read some of the portable vaporizer threads.

I would suggest the Grasshopper but not sure how many folks are continuing to have issues. The returns have slowed down on this forum.

If you bought one I would buy from Hopper Labs out of Boulder CO. That would insure an up to date vaporizer with all the new revisions.

Buying your first vaporizer is a difficult decision and a costly one. All that you can do is take the advice of others unless you are able to try some vaporizers out first which is hard to do.

Having a good desk style (plug in) vaporizer is as essential as a portable. A desk style generally delivers a stronger high. The Milaana is my heaviest hitting portable and reminds me of a portable log vape.

We are all different so what one person might absolutely love, it might not be the ultimate vaporizer for you? I personally don't like a vaporizer with a lot of parts to worry about and lose. I also like easy, easy cleaning and maintenance. I also want longevity, there are vapes out there that are throw away type portable vaporizers. Once the battery is toast it has to be thrown away. I think sorting through about 3 vaporizers that you would be interested in and read up.:2c:

Edit
I just realized I replied up above. Disregard any repeating statements. I did have something extra to add as you can see.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king
Since you're just starting out I'd recommend an original Solo. Still a beast of a unit, damn near foolproof and a great way to get started. Definitely fits your "ask". The newer versions of the Arizer/Solo family will run you an additional $100 or more but IMO the original Solo is more than you need, still positions you for growth over time (using bubblers, etc.) and it's proven itself over time. It will not disappoint you. I've tried all the newer versions of the Arizer/Solo family and I still love my original Solo enough to where I would still get another original Solo if mine went belly up.

They can be had for around $122 with the 10% discount and free shipping from Planet of the Vapes or Puff-It-Up .... so not only will you get a low cost, high functioning, much respected, bomb proof portable unit but you will be able to get it from the retailers who have also proven themselves to be as dependable as the unit itself.

Edit: Forgot to mention I'm agreeing with @ataxian when I recommend the OG Solo but it could be just because I'm hoping he'll volunteer to paint mine pink ;)

Goodness, new to Vaping. It's hard sometimes to get through all the buzz and see at a glance the variety out there. Vape critic has a solid website to take a look through, so does the cannabist. Right now the MV1 is pretty damn hot and rightfully so. If you don't mind the wait, MV1 might be worth your while.
I'm in agreement with the Crafty and Mighty but lean more towards the Mighty. The Davinci IQ takes a little time to fall in love with but when you do, it really is lovely. Solo is nice man and easy. Take a looksy through some of the review websites to get a sense of what the take down is, cleaning, etc. Since moving to vapes, I haven't looked back.

It occurred to me too about upkeep and cost involved with parts and pieces. The Crafty and mighty I spend yearly about $85 total on o-rings, concentrate pads, etc. Davinci that glass spacer set and a spare battery, haven't had to buy anything since but could see an o ring pack requirement in the future. Fireflies I haven't had to buy anything for ever. As you look, be mindful of parts and piece cost over the long term.

Be careful these vaporizer critiquing websites that have videos and such the person that does all this is getting free stuff. The MC may feel obligated to the company to give out positive advice about a vape. Even if they feel differently. They are trying to sell stuff and some may have some really great info. I find @Sneaky Pete is pretty objective.

There are so many vaporizers out there and more coming to the marketplace every day. They are mostly portables. Everyone needs to have a desk style unit IMO as well as a portable of course.

I would totally agree with that. Googling it and you'll see all the sites that pop up. Many really are just nonsense countdown lists. No real substance or comparison just: this is the best at #1. Everyone has different needs. There is no end all solve all vape. Each one is a unique experience in my eyes. There is some junk out there and scumbags who peddle it should have their eyes plucked out and their women taken. None are perfect either. Sending on in for repairs is sometimes crippling unless you have two. It's extremely hard going back to combusting after experiencing just how potent and cost effective vaping is.

Just want to bring up the tubo again. The best way to check it out is to read the tubo thread in the portable section. It's one that you buy directly from the maker. It comes with everything you need and, given the software, you can set it to whatever intensity or lack of intensity you want. The only thing you need to replace is a battery when one where out. Also I avoid complicated vapes because I'm a bit uncoordinated and too low tech to deal with some of these. The tubo is as simple as any battery vape out there and inexpensive. The vapcaps are simpler but are butane if that's ok.
thread: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/tubo-evic.22992/page-6

If you are considering a desktop, the logs last for years and are simple to use. Different people here have different favorite logs but I have all of them and really just pick the one with the best deal. They are all comparable: Underdog, enano, hi, woodscent.
