Underdog Log Vapes

After 2 years of use, my birch air core UD is wobbling like crazy on the inside. It started with a light wobble about a year ago but has gotten worse with time. It still works fine, actually, but I decided to stop in this thread after being gone from this forum for WAY too long, and hey, there's a sale on the Underdog! And there's a new and improved core version!

I thought I had finally kicked my VAS, but lo and behold, I just put in an order for a cherry UD with the new core and apparently it now comes with a VVPS. Hoping this one is sturdier than the air core model, but even if not, I got a LOT of good use out of the one I still have and have zero regrets with my purchase.

In fact, the UD is what I think actually cured my VAS for such a long time. It's perfect for my usage pattern and hitting it through water is just incredible. Plus, nothing beats the efficiency of those nylon stems and NonGs.

Can't wait to get my new and improved UD! Logs continue to be my favorite type of vaporizer out of everything I've tried over the years. Although I did just buy a Mighty as well, which I have yet to try, but once VAS gets you it REALLY gets you...

The UD seems to fit my vaping lifestyle also. It's my daily driver, in use basically all the time ;) Enjoy your new log vape!!:)

My UD arrived today!

So happy with my purchase and the service I received.

Check out https://www.instagram.com/p/BZSVRpuDyzp/ and swipe through to see a milk ideo

Great news man hope you enjoying it! I haven't put mine down since it arrived plus all them stems. It'll be the last vape you own, well besides another UD haha. All the different wood species and structural designs offered make it kind of hard having just one.

Left to right:
Myrtle, Wormy Black Oak, 2x Figured Black Walnut

Absolute stunners.

The lighter colored Black Walnut has that awesome iridescent holographic look. The waves seem to move around as the light shifts.

I was hoping you'd like that blonde Figured Black Walnut with the sapwood. It's so mesmerizing.

For anyone else interested, we've got a couple more pieces like that. If you order the Figured Black Walnut Vape Special, just ask in your order comments for a blonde one. <3

Thanks so much for those gorgeous photos @Kif-Kif

Wobbling? Is that bad? My Wild Maple Holiday Vape (purchased Feb 2016) is wobbling. Is it about to break?

Also I have no idea what kind of core that has. Does anyone know?

Also also I have noticed that most of the vapes currently listed do not give the option of having all 3 glass stems. Why is that?

Also also also the description of the Standard Core Mark 2 sez: "A core o-ring is not needed for use with glass stems" - what does that mean? I had o-rings I kept trying to use on the econo dog and on my wild maple gal and gave up on them because they were always slipping out of place and breaking anyway. Now I just stick the stem on until the top of the heater core hits the herb.

And finally also also also also - SPEAK to me of the Alpha Dog! Such as do the "oversize stems" require a new screen size and much other knowledge of the Alpha. I seek enlightenment...

Is it the heater core that's wobbling? I'm going to assume you have the sc2 ( correct me if I'm wrong FC) since the o rings aren't required for that core, and the way you're using the glass stem is correct @CurryLeafTreehugger. The 3 stems are part of the bday sale, and I think after the sale is over it'll be back to normal. I don't know shit about the alpha though haha.

Yeah, the heater core wobbles. I have no idea what kind of core is in that, it was made more than a year and a half ago.

It does have an indentation in it where the o-ring is supposed to be seated but I got tired of it repeatedly slipping and eventually breaking so I quite using it. Plus I never could figure out where the screen was supposed to go in the stem so I just started using it as described above - otherwise my herb was always at some random distance from the heat source. Because no mark on the glass stem for where to put the screen, o-ring wouldn't stay seated anyway, so between the two - very variable distance between herb and heat.

So maybe Standard Core Mark 1? Is it possible its an air core?

Also I just looked - should have done that before, eh. Oh well. Anyway it lists the same screen for 'glass and oversized stems".

Are the Alpha stems not glass then? If they're the same as the glass stems, why are they oversized? So confoozled.

My UD was bought the beginning of this month, and the glass stem and gong I purchased didn't have any marks. The birthday vape could have the sc1 either way hit up @underdog @underdogette for the wobbling core.

Hey CurryLeafTreehugger- From my records, you've got an Air Core. I'll PM you with some info, but we should probably get that replaced for you. Sounds like the wood has charred enough and giving the core room to wobble. Try not to let it spin, or the wires underneath going to the plug can break.

As for the Alpha, we don't have any glass stems for it right now. The Alpha's heat port is bigger than all the other vapes' heat ports, so the stems are not interchangeable. The glass ones have too thick of a wall and won't fit inside the Alpha, and too small to fit outside. Having said that though-- we have been able to make some special stems (nylon and stainless tubing) that can fit over a regular vape's heat port (Oversize or OS), but also fit inside the Alpha's heat port (regular Alpha Direct and regular Alpha 18mm, AKA 18mm OS).

The regular Alpha stems use the same screens -- Large. The XL Alpha 18mm NonG stem uses a special screen that's larger even than that, and we don't have enough of these made to list them on the website. The Alpha 18mm XL stem fits over the Alpha's heat port.

I know-- all of this is pretty confusing! It's hard to explain... so maybe if I can get some time in the next couple months, I'll make a quick video.

As for the O-rings-- we only really got those as a way to keep people's stems from sliding all the way down the heat port and touching your herb on Air Cores, because Air Cores don't have a top stopping plate. But as you've seen, some of the o-rings liked to slide, especially as they warmed up and stretched. They weren't necessary, but some people liked them.

With the new SC2, we find that you can get more heat soaking to your stem that's beneficial from the stopping plate that goes around the heat port, and there's really no reason to use an o-ring. I'll see if I can gather up a vape of each core type and try to take a picture of them all together, so everyone can see the difference.

I hope this helps!

I haven't got an Air Core anymore, but I do have a mini that has a similar core, here's a couple of pictures I hope can help point out the differences in core models. I grabbed two angles to give an idea of the depth at which the stopping plates sit. Both of my full-sized dogs have salmon-coloured o-rings installed on the heat port (just personal preference), but you should still be able to see the essentials. Okay, they're not quite salmon-coloured, if you're ever served salmon this colour, send it back.

Top left is a zebrawood laminate Standard Core 2 dog (that needs an underbutter spa treatment). The top right one is a black walnut Standard Core 1, you can distinguish this core by the star/cog/sawblade around the heat port. At the bottom is a black walnut mini/micro, the area around the heat tube is wide open most of the way down -- in a full-sized dog with an air core, most of the heat tube is surrounded by...air. :)

So Saturday - which is like 5 days ago - I mentioned wobbldiness of my UD vape. I really didn't think anything of it, I just assumed there was a loose nut in the bottom that I should probably tighten.

Well it turned out the wobbldiness was due to early aging of my UD due to (stuffs that UDette explained). And - unbeknownst to me - there is still a warranty on my device.

Them UD fellas could have just passed it over and never mentioned a thing but thankfully they are not that sort of folks.

I am now the proud possessor of a new Tiger Maple UD with the Mark 2 standard core. My old Wild Maple UD had an air core. Now that I have one of each I can make a better comparison. Basically the Mark 2 SC looks very similar to the air core only the heating element is much higher (near the top, which now that I think of it means no aromatherapy cups on this one, but that's ok, I still have my EconoDog for that - if I ever open whatever moving box its packed in).

This puppy is running hotter than my Wild Maple Air core - at 12.4V it was noticeably hotter just picking it up. So I've turned it down to 12V to see how it runs. I must wait awhile for it to cool down somewhat before I give it a try, but I expect it will still be the typical yayness that we have all come to associate with the entire UD fambly.

I don't typically hit my mailbox more than every few months - stupid mailpods. So the replacement UD could have been in there for a couple days by now. As usual, fast friendly service from the UD folks, faster than I am actually capable of responding myself.

YAYNESS! New UD testing under way!

Well the new UD with the Mark 2 standard core is definitely a Dog of a Different Color. I will need to experiment for awhile to home in on the "right" voltage for it. At 12.4/12.5 it was combusting (but that seemed to be the "best" voltage for my old UD with the air core).

At 12V it doesn't combust any more and was just ... different.

However due to more-than-usual tiredness (as TH is my day of running errands) I pretty much conked out after the first stem, LOL!

So more usage needed, but - yes, it is YAYNESS as usual.

I would really like to have a right angle plug for the power supply. I didn't see such on the UD pages. Does anybody know where I can get such? An adaptor would do. I keep all my stuff that I am using in a metal box and the cord draping over the side of the box makes the UD fall over if I'm not super careful - and who among us is super careful while herbally indulging?

If I had a right angle plug I could turn it so that the cord drops straight-ishly down, instead of trying to stick out horizontally and thus tending to pull the bottom up resulting in the UD falling over on its side.

Start at 9.5v and move up in increments of .1v. I started at 12 and was combusting as well haha. You'll get some tasty hits around 9.5-9.7 though (I have the honey locust of same design), but it also depends on which stem you're using and if you're using water or not. I find glass stems need a bit more power, but not much and gongs/WPA need a bit less power on the sc2

You can definitely still use your aroma cup- there's no reason not to! This style of core was our first style, that the aroma cup was designed for.

I'll let someone else, or @underdog answer re: right angle extension cords. :)

Glad you're enjoying your new pup-- and lots of fun experimenting on the horizon. <3

We don't have them anymore but you can get the right angle extension cords on ebay and other places.. here's one from there: 6' right angle DC extension 2.1mm x 5.5mm

As you discovered almost all of the newer Dogs (it does vary from Dog to Dog) run considerably hotter at a given voltage than previous generations. Now almost all of them will combust at 12v+, the sweet spot for most is now in the 10.5v to 11.5v range though again there is individual variation.

Ummm not in mine - it is way too shallow for it to set down in there the way that makes me feel safe. It is more stable when the UD is deep enough for the cup to sit down all the way to the "rim" (eg the rubber washer on the open end of the copper cap). Or at least more than 1/16th inch that is all the space there is between the top of the heating element and the top of the wood.

Are they all this shallow or maybe just this one? As I said - not a big problem as I still have the EconoDog (somewhere in a box, bet you guys know a thing or two about that about now) which I can use for aromatherapy just fine. Besides which there have been, shall we say, "unfortunate consequences" to past attempts at using a UD simultaneously for aromatherapy and herbal indulgence. *innocent look*

So just as well, when in my hands, I should use one unit for one thing at a time.

Ah gotcha, thanks for the clarification, I understand now. Yeah I've been playing with the core depth spacing the last couple months looking for just the right depth and you must have one of the most shallow set ones.. I could definitely see how that would make using an aroma cup feel janky. I settled on 1/4" to 3/8" (handmade variation) depth as the ideal (it affects lifespan, performance, etc) going forward but there' still some deeper/shallower ones in the 'supply chain'. :2c:
