Winegums' Woodcraft

I never showed off my last winegums purchase, from earlier in the summer.
That curly maple piece fits nicely in my mflb orbiter. The little guy on the right pairs nicely with my woodscents.

I worked on a fourth regular size prototype yesterday. I made some changes for the sake of efficiency and strength:
  • the center divider is thinner to free up storage space
  • the bottom of the storage side door is thicker for more strength
  • the top is thicker to allow for a 3/8" x 3/8" magnet to be installed
  • the cap holder is now a single piece of wood
  • the door magnets are now hidden from the outside

This regular size case came out to 65mm wide x 110mm long x 20mm thick, (slightly larger than a deck of playing cards). The previous cases I made were all XL cases which will be the largest I plan to make. The regular size case can still hold a lighter on the storage side with a bit of room for padding. Overall I'm pretty pleased with how it came together. Now I wait for my glass to arrive...

They're done! After I take a few photos I will post them up in my Etsy. The sixth case had a mishap while I was sanding and will need to be repaired before it can go up for sale. I'm proud of this first batch of cases, they're nearly identical, everything functions as it should and the figured cherry is stunning.

I originally thought I would put the magnet in the side of the case but I decided against it as it would detract from the beauty of the wood.

I like the idea of having everything in one case so that it's not cluttering up my pocket. The test tube works great for loading with the vacuum/straw method and the design is over all stronger than previous designs. I'm thinking of trying out some form of metal bushing to improve the pivot point in the future.

Let me know what you think!

love this last update!! the lighter side... i would never use a bic, so have you tried other torch style lighters to fit in there?
No, I haven't, though there are a lot of lighters that will fit in the space. Here's two examples that will fit. The space inside is 94mm long x 25mm deep x 15mm wide. I haven't tried these models, so I don't know if they're any good.

I can always offer a model without the test tube that can hold larger lighters and has one large storage space like my previous prototypes.

I might get one of the flint wheel lighters to try out. The constant clicking gets annoying.

Wow, @Winegums, that box looks fantastic! Are you still planning one that can fit the XL vapcaps? Also, I like to store abv & herb, would there be any way to have 2 smaller length test tubes, maybe one on each side, for this? I suppose that may get in the way of the magnet, but perhaps there's a way.

Beautiful work, great job!

Thanks!

The larger prototype I just finished will fit XL as will most of the others I completed. The first run of Cherry cases was for standard/regular size Vapcaps. The next run I do will be for XL size vapcaps in the same maple as what I just posted yesterday.

It's possible that I could have two short test tubes fit into the case but I don't have a way of making clean cuts and fire polishing the lip of the tubes. As an alternative I could make a case that carries two full length tubes while sacrificing the space for the lighter. I could make it slimmer at that point and would design it a bit differently.

A question to those interested in XL cases. Which version should I make?

What is more desirable, larger flexible storage or individual storage for herb and lighter?
EEvMZBt.jpg

The individual storage would cost more due to the added complexity but protects the glass better than the large storage space.

Are there any features that I haven't considered that you would want?

Hmm, that's a tough question. Because on the one hand, if it doesn't fit everything I need, I probably wouldn't bother (that's the reason I don't have a Dynastash, that it can't carry a lighter and herb easily). But I wouldn't want everything just tumbling out of it when it opened. These things look pretty neat, though, so probably I'd vote for larger flexible storage. I'm in two minds about it. Sorry for not being more helpfully decisive!

This is my biggest issue with it too, I want everything in one case so that there's no pocket or desk clutter.

Things really don't tumble out of the case when you're opening it because you naturally place your thumb and middle finger on the sides. After opening it your thumb and fingers follow your index finger and slip off the sides of the case to grab what's inside. It's quite slick and intuitive once you play with the case for a bit, however it is more of a handful to grab the lighter and test tube at the same time.

so I take it the sides are secure and don't open in transit?
The sides have a fair amount of magnet force holding them closed and it's unlikely that the doors will snag on things since they're flush with the edges. No amount of shaking is going to pop the doors open and the case naturally wants to stay closed due the pivot points and magnets. I wouldn't fear tossing it in my bag/back pack, going on a jog, or doing anything of that sort.

would be nice to see one of these with a slide top...fucking SAS dammit!
I've thought of doing a slide top but it would require thicker sides and make the case much thicker or reduce the interior space. I could easily make slides but there's more downsides than upsides to using them.

Stash acquisition syndrome?

that makes sense, being wood ignorant is real in my case.

not having a stash keeps the omni XL at home

so now I am being hit with a strong case of stash acquisition...fml

I think I would be very interested in a case that could carry my omni XL, DV doesnt make a stasher that size, and a lighter. I think it would nice to have a place to stash a hot lighter. I'm looking forward to playing with your version one case that I ordered. I'm not overly concerned with a place to stash weed, I've got enough other little containers and such and sometimes I'll carry more than one stasher anyway. But a place to stash the hot cap and lighter after use, I think those are the big two concerns.

@Winegums, I just took receipt of the new custom stem and stash:

GpEyJMr.jpg

(sorry good camera is on loan to a friend)

The stem is beautiful, those combos came out really nice. It's functionality is spot on, as in, it fits perfectly on the MFLB and I can dial in exactly the level of airflow I want. Although I'm yet to try is with an SS tip which is my fav for bong rips so I suspect the experience will only get better!

The stash is also stunning, I love the grain, it's wavy and it's contents will get me wavy. So it's all wavy baby...

It's actually smaller than I was expecting, about the size of a 90's cassette case (Walkman). A tad larger than a deck of cards, I'm glad I went with the non-XL version. This is after all supposed to be my grab and go kit.

The lighter fits perfectly and doesn't rattle due to the padding. Actually nothing in this stash rattles, it's really solid.

I like my Dynastash but have never really used it due to the fact that it isn't really functional for me. This stash is, I can easily fit the Omni, a lighter and a very small vial in with the lighter. I did have to file down the edges of the cap though but it fits and is enough for 3-4 cap loads.

Thanks man, you've knocked these ones out the park.:bowdown::bowdown:

P.S. I'd recommend these over the Dynastash any day for functionality and usefulness.
