Herb Grinders

^+100. I think it's fine to have multiple grinders on hand for different purposes or needs. One reason I went for the GR8TR jar for my go-to is Kannastor said it was easier on those with hand/wrist pain. I love it for myself, the way it fits together, the fact it's taller allows a different motion that is in fact, easier and pain-free for me so far. But it's too big for holidays and get-aways, so a small SC fits perfectly in my smell-proof Vatra travel case.

But hey, some FCers have many styles and brands so there must be a reason! People's needs and desires can and do change; 20 yrs ago I wouldn't have cared about arthritis in the hands. I hope the GR8TR continues to suit my daily needs but I'm not in love with it. It's a grinder. Some folks get married to a brand or style and won't consider others. I don't want that to be me.

I'm so grateful there are several grinders addressing the needs of those with arthritis, neuropathy and other hand strength/dexterity conditions. As well as those addressing the needs the twenty-somethings. We are living in a golden-age of cannabis consumption and all related products. Never before have there been so much exciting tech and toys aimed at us. Great time to be an aging cannabis lover! Or a young one for that matter!

The less you handle and grind the bud the more keif will be attached to the flower vs loose.

If you're really interested in maximizing kief use the grinder upside down with a kief coin in the catch try. Grind the sh!t out of it and then give it a bunch of shakes.

To avoid all that wasted (IMO) keif collection grind right side up and don't shake/tap your grinder.

You can also just wait till the screen gets clogged and leave it that way - minimal kief will fall through.

The moisture levels and age of the bud (proper storage principals) will also play into the equation - dry old bud will lose more tricome heads during grinding.

With my SWII, I collect very little kief (currently 1mm coating) despite hammering almost 180 grams through it over the past couple months.

I follow the handle very little, right side up grind and empty into a glass storage container. It's a perfect tricome covered medium coarse grind for my vaporizers.

Basically don't feel hostage to the number of pieces if you have a prefered style, company or price point.

I've used the Volcano grinder exclusively the last several days. Oddly, considering my manual dexterity keeps me from being able to use other 2-piece grinders, I already liked the Volcano grinder, though it has mostly gone ignored. Now that I have used it exclusively for a few days, though, I think I'm going to keep using it exclusively.

The Volcano grinder is much easier to use than my 4-piece SCS. For starters it has functional knurling that actually grabs my hands. Also, there's no magnet post to navigate around, which makes things surprisingly easier. It just takes less work to operate. And then I end up with a uniformly fine grind.

S&B does just about everything right.

My large space case grinder kief screen is clogged, should I clean it with some isopropyl alcohol and brush it with a toothbrush?

Additionally
...

I'm going to get a Magic Flight finisher grinder, but it comes in Natural wood & Cherry for $25 and Walnut wood for $30. Why is the Walnut version extra? Any small benefits I need to know about them?

Thanks

That'll do it.

Besides aesthetics there shouldn't be any meaningful difference between those woods, so it's probably just related to supply/demand.

Walnut is a bit harder to work and clean up than maple or cherry. Probably a little bit of a premium on walnut and cherry over maple or whatever the natural wood they use is.

When I purchased the Digit it came with a Kif grinder which broke a few months ago. Since then I've been using the acrylic orange grinder that comes with it.

My experience so far: when I used the kif from the collection I found that the chamber got quite 'gloopy' and needed to be stired. Not sure that I ever felt any higher, but it seemed to make the ABV go further.

With the orange grinder I clean it with the supplied brushes every time. Not kif or resin gets the chance to collect and no junk builds up. What I have noticed is that if that particular bud is kif heavy you tend to get a better chamber that will deliver. With vaping I think your best of including the kif that came with the bud - that way you get the full profile.

One thing I do find annoying with the orange grinder is that it's more messy to fill the chamber up. With the kif grinders I'd spoon it in with no mess. As another poster said proper kif will be better then the save from the grinder, so I think I'll stay with the proper S&B one. Having used a few cheap plastic ones I'd say that the S&B one seems to stay very clean and useable as long as you clean it with the brush ever time.

I know that S&B is a good performer because I have had one, and I know this may be a nit pick, but the thing is made out of acrylic. I personally won't use any vape made of anything unhealthy that could end up in the herb.

For serious vapers I would use something like the SLX over the volcano grinder 7 days a week.

I think that there's a difference between cheap plastic and acyrlic. I have two and the one I've been using for 6 months looks brand new cause I clean it with the brush, but the material isn't tainted in anyway. People say that the plastic on the bags are bad for you, not sure about that...

I had a similar grinder to the SLX, makes for easier sessions as you can grind up an 8th and just spoon it in at .5 a time.

I'm a little more concerned that my Herbalizer is made of plastic and has warped.

@Aimless Ryan Warped Plastic = cause for concern IMHO, especially when it's a vaporizer. Please take care of yourself because I like having you around. I'm pretty sure I have lots of like-minded company. Please tell me you've set the Herbalizer aside in favour of the other fine tools at your disposal. PEACE

@BudCrow I think you've nailed it, cleaning with a brush after each use. Some will say "PITA" but in reality it's less than 60 seconds. It's amazing what it does; it doesn't have to be S&B's brush although I'm sure it works well. Kief will always want to stick together, using a brush allows me to "herd" it where I want it.

A make-up brush is great, kief doesn't want to stick around. I've also had good luck with a paintbrush, a synthetic bristle with 6-inch or so handle. Don't go cheap, go to a proper art store: either local or interwebs. Synthetics aren't expensive and you don't need a big brush so it shouldn't be too expensive anyway. Again it seems that kief doesn't want to hang on to the bristles. It's magic!

Every 2-3 months I give it a simple bath to keep the threads in tip-top, you know how eventually microscopic bits of kief get in the threads, eventually attracting more, and before you know it: Yup, that's right, it starts jamming. Makes me effing crazy. Doing this bit of maintenance hopefully keeps my kit and mental state in shape for years to come!

I saw a mate recently, he had 2 grinders out: a SC & Kannastor both older. Both were absolutely caked with goodness, I could barely make out where the teeth were. He complained that he had spent hours picking at them and still had a ways to go before either would be operational. No telling how many years it had been; just kills me because this guy is old enough to know better and experienced as well. Of course I didn't say so... He's a craftsman carpenter FFS! It just doesn't click for him when it comes to his herbal tools I guess.

I got a kannastor vape gr8tr today, and despite my reluctance and all that, I'm actually really liking it.

I'm not sure how I feel about the dumb added storage thing, but whatever. It will be nice for bringing a nug on the go, so I don't have to grind a full days material ahead of time, and then let it sit, exposed to air all day... but I don't like the idea that the grinder COULD be smaller without it... and it's not even optional...

It grinds great with no trichrome loss... none even visible on the bottom plate. I quite like this and as long as I can keep it performing like new (or simply buy a new vape gr8tr plate... or however their stuff works) I think it'll continue using it for fine grind needs and when I'm looking for minimal trichome loss.

I was getting really frustrated with how often my threads would get jammed up in my SuperWeapon2 if I'm being honest. It started happening with much less frequency after I cleaned it (who woulda thought that 6mo. of build up would give me issues...) but it's happening now simply when I load too much... Not sure if this is a teeth problem, or I'm loading too much of too sticky of a material but idk. I could definitely break my stuff down more before putting it thru the grinder, but defeats the purpose... I don't want trichomes on my hands...

Hence why this no kiefcatch grinder is very nice. There also looks to be pretty much no way it can get stuck when I load too much and thus have to use a lot of force to get it to twice, since the grinding plate is on the inside? idk.

Cheers

@Hjalmark Lol, you've sussed out the truth! However, you broke the no name-calling rule whilst doing so. I'm afraid I have to report you whereupon you'll be thrown into the FC abyss. Sorry man, just rules.

"Has anyone heard from Hjalmark lately? I really liked that guy, he was funny... just disappeared..."

@CbdLife I am currently using the coarse grind plate in a Kannastor gr8tr. Can't recommend it for what you're seeking, just not coarse enough. I think you're on the right track with New Vape Coarse model. I've heard good things, can't remember the thread. PM @NewVape710 and ask about it, he's the owner and he's on FC quite a bit, really amazing how he is with his customers & members in general. He's super cool and always looking to help someone; always innovative. I'm positive he wouldn't mind chatting with you. :2c:

Disappointing to here the kannastor one is not coarse enough, there where other funky one with changeable grind plate?, wonder if anyone of them is any good, like the lift and clipper?

And that wooden one with funky shape

I been looking at a coarse grinder now for 2 years, never feel like it's going to be coarse enough or much better then the 5 dollar grinder I have now
