They are not placebo. But again, not all antidepressants are SSRI's and even when side effects may be common I've noticed that often people who keep trying find one that doesn't cause those side effects.

i agree maggie , im going to ask my doc to prescribe me some beta blockers to try as i read they can work to and they are a med that in my case with the graves disease they are commonly prescribed to controll the racing heart and stuff which are a big trigger for my issues

oh crap, hope i can edit it in time

Just because someone or their friend was able to mitigate their symptoms with "mindfulness" and a healthy diet, doesn't mean that is the smart way for most people to treat that disease/disorder. It's very likely that they are a lucky exception to the rule, and/or that their symptoms aren't as severe as those who actually need the medication.

i will not be able to put myself through the initial loading faze that it takes to get on this type of med .

Again, "type of med" means only that they are hypothesized to act through inhibition of neurotransmitter re-uptake. Chemically, they're not similar. Fluoxetine (Prozac), the first popular SSRI, has an effective half-life of about 9 days. Taking Prozac everyday, levels build to steady-state after about 5 weeks (and that steady-state is about 10 times higher than the daily dose.) This is probably the source of the idea of a "loading phase". Escitalopram has a half-life of about 1 day, so it only takes a few days to reach steady-state. That's not all there is to the observed response, but people - including physicians - frequently overlook pharmacokinetics.

Fine; I did not edit it in time. Now I have no idea what I was going to type!

Something about how mindfulness, dietary tweaks, and regular exercise have been show to beat medication in a number of studies?

But I agree with EverythingsHazy. To me that simply shows how much psych meds are over prescribed.

Thats the thing i guess , the amount of people that actully need the meds is probably miniscule in relation to the amount they are actully prescribed.

I can tell you from experience though good luck trying to tell that to the psychiatrist and even GP that are perscribing them .

I had the opposite experience. I had to fight tooth and nail to get seen by a professional and get the correct meds. Oddly, my GP was fine prescribing low level antidepressants for my sleep issues (they didnt help) but not for being completely CRAZY :) Go figure. Thankfully I eventually saw a panel of psychiatrists, had all the blood tests and started talking over diagnosis for autism with that department. I also had the Crisis Welfare team coming round daily to check up on me and provide me with occasional sleeping tablets (I did not like those) and valium (I very much liked the valium).

My paroxetine side effects were horrendous, horrible. Like shifting out of my body every few seconds then shifting back in. My cock stopped working completely, even peeing was difficult, forget doing anything else with it! A constant sea sickness feeling. But I could feel the shouting in my head subsiding within days.

Its taken a good year or so get back to fully working order, the side effects subsided but persisted for quite sometime. I had to have a good think about whether I wanted to live without a working penis or not, was the non suicidal trade off worth it? :) Thankfully, that little fella is back online nowadays.

The great thing about the meds is they were helping me not be upset about my winkle in the slightest, quite an acceptable catch 22 :)

emmdeemo glad your little fella is working lol and that your doing well :)

I guess there is the possibillty that the reason the docs i have seen keep pushing the meds on me is as much as im trying to find other ways , i probbaly am one of the ones that really do need them too . as in ya i guess i could be as crazy as they say . lol i just dont want to except it . also i am not suicidal so even though i am incompasitated by my problem i guess in the grand scope of things im not as seiously in a dangours situation as some that are .

Im not suicidal im not seeing things or hearing voices other tben the ones in my head which are bad enough but i juat cant take the pills. i think i have even devolped a paranoia about the pills them self which makes it even harder it took me months before i could even make myvself takebthe thyriod pills which i need as much to aviod a deadly thyriod storm as im sure you know too well . but as much as a suicidal person needs there meds to keep them alive .

I just hope that i have a break soon and the CBT training starts to work

Eh, I could live without the hassle a little fella brings :) But thanks all the same :)

Yeah man, the thyroid is so undervalued and under known about. It can effect EVERYTHING else in your body.

Did you try beta blockers for the anxiety? They dont work for me as my stuff it turns out was complicated by autism/ocd etc, plus I'm asthmatic and beta blockers end up with me in hospital, but I know a few ppl who have had great success with them helping to keep calm. I think I saw mention of them being offered at some point earlier in the thread? Cant remember and it all just came back to me so posting before I forget again :)

Just a thought...

hey emmdeemo , i decided to hold off on asking for the beta blockers im actually feeling pretty good in the last week . im going for blood work to check were the thyroid is at on sept 4 .
but i can tell just from how im feeling it must be back in the proper ranges .
iv been for more CBT sessions and im starting to implement what im learning there in real life situations . i think its starting to help :)

the therapist there said to me last time i was there and asking about drug therapy and CBT together , or one vs the other . he told me the most important thing was to do one or the other or both . but it has to be with a positive mind set either way i started to realize just how much of a negative mind set i have .

also im almost weaned off the benzos i figure another week or two at the most and i will go for my first days without any . which is huge in my book , i have been taking them every day since january . and then before that as much as a few times a week to every day for years .

i have been exercising and really trying to change my negative mind set . and actually starting to vape cbd only , and a very low thc cbd mix about 4 percent each and low and behold im feeling soo much better .

im just hoping that it continues the way it has been for the last week or soo also planning to be back to work soon as well .

So there could have been withdrawal from the benzo's complicating your moods too maybe? That definitely a lot to be dealing with at once. You have my sympathies! Did the docs give you any idea how long they think the Graves has been festering for?

Positivity is a fucking nightmare when your hormones are pushing in you entirely a different direction! Sounds like you're on a better path now, and its just that annoying shitty cliche thats oh so true, its just gonna take time.

Thats a whole bunch of positive steps you've taken, which is imperative I think when it comes to graves disease and staying in remission. Its hyperactive feedback loop of no sleep and crazy hormones is habit forming over time and its taken me a bit of patience and being kind to myself to get back to where I once was.

Good luck on your T counts with those blood tests!

thanks emmdeemo , when i first went to the endo he said he thought it was fairly recently that the graves started . but im thinking maybe a couple years or so before it was seen on the blood test .

man , last night i had the best sleep i have had in as long as i can remember . went to bed at 1030 slept till 556 and its the first time in a long time i didnt take any bezos before bed :)

I have used a lot of prescribed medicine and often personally find better results from natural sources. Since you are looking for people with personal experience, the best I have had for anxiety, depression, ect has been Kanna. You can smoke it, vape Kanna, or even make it a tea. Might be worth a try.
as people with personnel experience .

that is exactly what i was looking for . i still may try the new one i got yesterday its called cipralex and according to my doc may be a good one too try for my particular problem . more anxiety and panic then depression as far as i can tell , although ive heard they go hand in hand .

the only thing is i have such an paranoia about taking pills i really dont know if it will make things better for me or possibly worse . i will probably be hyper aware of every little twinge and feeling going on , and well it just makes it hard for me to swallow almost any pills .

but this issue im having right now is just crazy . im almost ready to try anything . the endo did say yesterday that its really kinda a bitch , although not his exact words lol . but that a guy like me with anxiety issues ends up getting a disease that basically causes it lol . i had a really good talk with him actually , and he acknowledged that cannabis can help with anxiety which i thought was pretty cool .

anyway thanks again it does help in adding some comfort knowing that others here are on these meds and using cannabis without issues . it was begining to maybe be a little depressing to think that if i chose the ssri that i may have to stop the cannabis which would not make me happy at all . can i ask do you guys use cbd as well as thc and are both a non issue ?

Somebody pages ago suggested genetic testing as part of finding answers. This helped me tremendously because my results pointed to drugs that could make me worse. I have some AKT1 mutations that make high THC likely to cause me psychosis. I can't do big gun antihistamines like Trazodone because my magnesium and sodium levels are already chronically imbalanced, so it triggers migraine. And I can be hypothyroid one day and hyper the next. No matter how expert the help is that I get, their remedies are still a crap shoot because we have still only barely scratched the surface of what makes us tick or sick. I got temporary relief on benzos but the withdrawal set me back further than where I started. Beta blockers weakened my heart muscle. Cannabis might do that too. So, those of us struggling for equilibrium just have to break down and have a good cry and pay attention to whether or not we actually might feel better from the detoxing tears.

My mom thinks all illness is caused by Lyme disease. My dad thought everyone has cancer. He refused treatment at 47 and lived to be 83.

I have fun sometimes as a psychotic. Who is to say what illness really is. These days kava kava makes my life less painful...but nothing lasts.

hey emmdeemo ,
i had a endo appointment yesterday actually . ive now been pretty stable in my thyroid blood work for about two months . the doc told me yesterday that he wants me too stay at the same dose i have been on now for the last two months , for another two months . then i will come off the meds and if my levels bounce back up then i will have my thyroid removed .

as far as the anxiety and CBT therapy goes .... well im still back at work , but not quite full time hours yet . i havnt had any major panic attacks or any of the real scary heart racing stuff for a while now , so this is great .

i really feel different for the better . but i still have pretty good anxiety at times . and other symptoms . but not any were near as bad as what i was going through before the CBT therapy and when my thyroid was up .

im not taking any psychiatric meds and still only very small dose of clonazapam just .125 mg a day with maybe up two .25 mg every third or forth day .

im still vaping everyday but not a large amount . and using pretty much 1 too 1 thc /cbd strains .

i have a psychiatrist appointment nov 1st so will see how that goes . im still pretty set in my wanting to fight this without the meds but i know he will probably try and convince me on taking meds . will see
