Lo and Behold! The transformative power of Vapor.
Anyone remember getting sent to the store with some money and food stamps to buy your mom some cigarettes and milk? Not a second glance! I did it as early as 8 years old
:haw: OMG Yes! Or I could walk into the local bar and use the cigarette machine after playing a few games of Haunted House pinball.

Oh man the early 80s not only we arcades awesome (new and exciting games came to the arcade) but arcade games were all over the place. I used to play rygar at the tiny convenience store, then look at comics on the rack.

Are there places that still sell comics on a rack that a kid can look through?

There might be at few city newstands and maybe some rural supermarket chain that sells magazines.

Haven't seen a functioning comic book spinner rack in a store in a long time. :myday: But there has to be a few holdouts. Not sure if Online digital comics are a big thing.

Comics have been elevated as magazines at some book store chains. I'm aware that book chains are disappearing.

I thought I've seen the last pay phone. But there are a few out there.

There are 0 payphones anywhere. I had to go to a phone store a few years ago to call a taxi.
Sometimes it seems like a different world to me. Could a major tv character say something like: "No bum that can't speak poifect English oughta stay in this country...oughta be de-exported the hell outta here!" (that's one of the milder ones
Or a popular musical have songs with lyrics like:"
I'm a
Colored spade
A nigger
A black nigger
A jungle bunny
Jigaboo coon
Pickaninny mau mau"
or
In the name of the father, the son, and the holy ghost. Amen.

Not that those were necessarily great but it was a world where those could be said. I read that some places are refusing to play "Gone with the Wind".

I believe those racks held comics that cost 13-15 cents when they were new. Wow what a blast from the past! I'm not sure if kids can look like we could these days; I want to say when comics went to 50-75 cents they started wrapping in plastic but I'm not sure if this is true today. I quit caring around 79 because girls & rock-n-roll. But they are big money these days and they're not even called "comics".

Another thing I've noticed is a decline in garbage cans lol. They used to be an over downtown areas and in Parks but not anymore.

@Diggy Smalls, you deserve some kinda LOL medal - you make me laugh so hard across multiple threads. But I think trash bins have been reduced in cities due to "threat reduction" and "ain't got no money". European cities will clamp them over here if the threat level is higher, like Paris during Tour de France, but it also seems as if there are fewer bins than in the late 90s. But seems most governments say they're broke.

I did a little research. Some of the decrease in garbage cans is due to the "bring it, leave with it" mentality with garbage. It makes sense to save money in the short term, but guess what's gonna happen when you don't have a place to put trash? And then you need to pay someone to clean up the trash that could have been in a can...

@pxl_jockey thanks man! I crack myself up, it's good to know I'm not laughing alone.

I'll just watch and see how this conversation plays out. ....I got the feeling it's a lot of folk around here lying about their age to begin with...and just in case somebody wanna make something of it, yea "I voted" on the survey but I just can't take this kind of crap serious. Sacred feminine? My ass! What in "tarnation" could feminists be complaining about coming from such a rich cultural background as that right there

There was not anything about feminism in my post anywhere so I don't get your post at all.

One minute ur talking about a payphone(or lack thereof) then...I dont know what prompted the next sentences you typed.

Are you complaining that the horribly offensive verses in that song are now unacceptable?

Yes I am. Just as All in the Family used offensive language to challenge racism, homophobia in a comedy, the songs represent the same attitude towards violence and war. But that perspective is totally alien now. I'm curious as to what the older ones on the board think of that.

And yes I started with phones. But just generally I've been looking at attitudes right now and I am so glad that I'm not in my twenties. Or younger.

(Still no feminism in my post.)

@little maggie -- Thank you. I never would of got what you meant in your original post without clarifying it like you just did.

PS--I have NO Idea what that crack about feminism had to with either. Considering you mentioned it ZERO in your post.
This thread is about nostalgia and the feminism is like a shadow between then and now so I was just staying relevant is all..:2c::worms: Maybe I should've said feminists these days but:cool::brow::myday: .....It might not be "just quite" as racially charged these days.
What's this the Confederacy thread? Is this why states rights are so important and the legal weeds being rationed so discriminately amongst them.:puke:

When I hear about feminism back in the 1970s and the end of the 1960s I remember women were burning their bras. I used to watch the TV show "That Girl". Marlo Thomas even stopped wearing a bra. It was quite obvious on the show. As a 11 or 12 year old I was thinking everyone can see That Girl's nipples.

People were quite radical. Men were burning their draft cards because we had a draft. When young men turned 18 they had to sign up for the draft. My husband had to do it when he turned 18 and all his friends as well. Some folks were going to Canada so they didn't have to fight in a war they didn't believe in.

Things might be headed back to that radical state of thinking with the way things are going in the U.S

I loved watching Archie Bucker with the show All In The Family. TV shows during that period of time helped to put hate and bigotry into words and story lines. It showed in plain sight how horrible it really was. Putting it out as a comedy was less offensive to folks. It helped to turn the tides in racism in my world.

My dad acted just like Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Conner). I felt like I couldnt bring my black friend to my house. I was afraid my dad would embarrass me by saying something rude. I had to fight racism ( another ism) in my own home. At one point I remember actually telling my dad to shut up. By the time I was 16 I had about had it with the bigotry on my dads part.

Edit
If the Trump admistration tries to take our cannabis away you will see rioting in the streets.

I had trouble understanding the jist of what you were getting at first.

The attitude of those in their twenties, I'm starting to get a little more from their perspective. But yes indeed @little maggie there has been a sea change when it comes to what terms can be used even in a self defamatory manner or to shed light on an uncomfortable subject. Or maybe I'm just a meathead. :freak:

Sorry to @lwien as I'm sure the last page or 2 got waaay off-topic of what is a great idea for a thread.

To the Americans: can we please vote our age & get nostalgic without getting political, please? I'm American too so not being holier-than-thou, but our country's current (and past) troubles are incredibly divisive. I can't imagine living there right now. But this is a global forum so yeah...

So please somebody please talk about your age and memories in a way that doesn't kill my buzz. Please.

I'll give it a go.....Hope it's not a buzzkill.....sorry but this might not fit the bill.....

Back in 1960's I lived in Paterson NJ. Our neighborhood was dirt poor and completely integrated. Prior to that day I don't remember anything "racial" but I was young enough to where it probably didn't register. The majority of the folks in my neighborhood were Black, Puerto Rican, Irish and German and all of us kids played together. In and outside of each other's apartments contantly. Then it happened......

On this day I was 7 or 8. ....I remember I was playing stoop ball in front of my neighbor's building with the usual bunch of kids. The building, like mine, had 6 apartments in it and just about every denomination lived there and everyone got along, at least that's how I remember it. It was getting late in the day when a large group of white boys/men (teens up into the twenties) were walking briskly down the street toward downtown with bats and other menacing looking things in their hands. A little later a group of black boys/men, heading in the same direction with the same brisk walk and with the same 'things in their hands' came by.

I remember "feeling" like something bad and important was happening but not really understanding what it was all about as I sat there with my friends. When I think back on it now I wonder what those black and white groups were thinking when they passed my "every denomination" group on the stoop. None of the people in these groups said a thing to us. That was the first night of the riots.

After that day/night .... the two things I remember most were not being able to play outside for a few days and not being able to play with the other kids who were not the same color as me. It was my first introduction to a new version of "them", "we", "us", and "they". "They" were not allowed to play with "us" and "we" weren't allowed to play with "them". Eventually time passed and we all started playing together again but it wasn't quite the same.

I started school a little early for my age in '71; this was Kansas after their civil rights upheaval mid-late 60s. I remember in first grade, we had a (state?federal?) special program called Free to be You & Me. It had sports/TV/cultural celebrities talking about things like feelings, tolerance & understanding. 2 bits I remember: "That Girl" Marlo Thomas (loved her) hosting & footballer Rosey Grier playing guitar and singing about it's okay to cry. Lol but I guess our little brains soaked it right up. Fast forward, I'm 11 and we're moving to Lubbock Texas, this is 79 I think. Lubbock is not a small town but they had until that time refused to integrate their public schools. They had been holding out since the sixties! Only when the federal government threatened to withhold federal funds did they capitulate. I had a moment like @His_Highness when a man who lived across the street told me I shouldn't be throwing a football with two black boys but in a more vulgar way. That man taught 6th grade math in a school somewhere. And at 12, I knew he was wrong. And now that's me getting political... Sorry for that. Thanks for the memories!

Epstein didn't kill himself
Late 50's here. In 5th or 6th grade in the Denver public schools, they subjected us to an early version of DARE. We were shown 3 different videos, with kind of cool music, and Starsky and Hutch-type street scenes. After a cop showed us some sample drugs in a case, some kid asked the cop what she would do if he grabbed the case and ran with it. The cop said with a straight face she would shoot him.

The whole thing made myself and 2 friends eager to try drugs, since the presentation seemed like BS. We actually checked out the videos to watch a couple more times at lunch time to see what we could learn.

great threat

Great to read everyones experiences. For me a sense of unity has been lost. Bay Area folks will remember the 89 earthquake. I remember taking care of each other in my neighborhood. Its was a sketchy time but it was also great in the same sense. It made you realize whats important. It was one of the most peaceful times of my life. :peace:
