Dan's Nomad Mockup & Shipping thread

In yours I prefer the first "other side" mockup. But actually I preferred one that you discarded which was similar (red wood black collar) but using the "red mountains" paper.

The katazome red mountains? That was walnut body with padauk collar actually. It's nice but doesn't grab me as much... It may be between that first other side one and the purple ones now... Its tough bc price is certainly a big part of the equation, $330, $305, or $290, hmmmmm

Oh just saw previous page, thank you @Dan Morrison! Now I can spend my weekend distracted obsessing over these photos lol

Not wanting to annoy anyone, but is there (still) no cocobolo body mock up around somewhere - or am I missing something?

@Dan Morrison Thanks for the heads up. I tried to reach out for you via mail and PM. Looking forward to hearing from you - thanks!!

Correct, there's no cocobolo body mockup yet. Also no milk paint button mockup, which I thought for sure people would ask for since you can get so many different specific colors to match or contrast with the sleeve. I guess the cool factor of the lichen and abalone is too much to give up?

  1. That cocobolo collar really tied the room together for me

I almost went with a Cocobolo collar, but finally chose Blackwood. The latter really drew out the darker coloring in the Cherry Burl body and the paper.

First with the Cocobolo collar.

Now with my choice, the Blackwood collar.

Maybe I'm seeing something that others don't, but for me the Blackwood, with my other choices, just makes things pop. And, the Cherry Burl is so beautiful that it made me want no paper. Of course, then it wouldn't have been as the artist envisioned it, so I quickly rejected that idea with no regret.

In the end I'll have, IMO, a real showpiece, which I envision being displayed in a glass case at some point. It won't sit unused though, as I think Dan's approach with the heater modules is a great idea. We'll know for sure soon enough.

EDIT: Classic movie (watched it more times than I can recall), one of my favorite scenes, and totally relevant. Good job, @grokit. :)

One of my faves. Well done!

@Dan Morrison said he was having Internet issues and will likely need a couple more days to sort out the invoices.

I'm kinda glad for the issues. Lol. This process has been very difficult for me. I can't decide!

Anyway I sent Dan a note that I'm looking at this one.....

I did ask Dan if he could do a Blackwood bottom to match the collar and tie it all together.......

Yeh a couple more days to finalise the choices ain't no bad thing.

The Blackwood bottom cover is a neat idea.

Well in a huge twist, I've decided to go with the standard walnut body and padauk collar, plus abalone button, and a milk painted kraft paper to match... None of the chiyogami were quite right

Edit: Below is a rough mock up of what I am hoping Dan can do, colors and such aren't exact, but you get the idea to match the collar and button colors... Hopefully Dan can paint the whole background like this and then the red stripes, otherwise may have to leave the background plain paper and do something like in the second photo to get the other color in there a little (could maybe have three vertical numbers in that color too, at the end of each horizontal stripe on the other side perhaps...) We'll see what is possible:

Just got home and saw I got an email from Dan about my Nomad. Yay! He gave me the final price for the unit and showed me a mock-up of what the final one's going to be like.

I can't wait until I finally see it in person!

Nice man, I really like that combo.

I too got a mail from Dan confirming the order details. No mock up though as it's a custom sleeve so he'll need a bit of time to mock something up.

Good to have him back online :)

(Edit: now the right thread) and close to final so figured I'd share mine here too:

Much nicer than my own rough mock ups from that thread, though this doesn't have the small heater side view to show how the horizontal stripes bend around, while these colors may also be slightly different tones in the end.

He also sent me this option, if I go with a plain kraft paper background, to get both colors in:

Pretty sure I am going with the first option, but we'll see how things go. Presuming that the milk paint will give me a little more time to make my final final decision on the specifics, but I am feeling good about my choices thankfully!
