Plain yellow mustard, sweet relish and onions are the best toppings if I'm making one. If I buy, my favorite is the Chicago dog.

Now that we've settled the important issue of toppings, how about the REAL issue.

Is a hot dog a sandwich?

(For those who need to know some background on the debate, see the chart at https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C-wyhyfXYAALcbz.jpg .)

Haha I was asked exactly the same question last week by a good friend of mine.

I'm a hard line traditionalist :nope:

My current favorite. It's great on dogs and wonderful with a grilled cheese and onion sandwich. It will bring you to your knees. Heaven...

"Grilled cheese and onion sandwich"?

Does such a thing even exist?

Depending on the bread, I suspect even a traditionalist such as /u/GreenHopper will find it in the "sandwich" category. But, claiming it is a "grilled cheese" in some way is fighting words to some. They would call it a "melt".

Loving this thread!

So my take on it would be:

If
Grilled cheese sandwich is sealed at the edge using a toasty machine

Then

It's a toasty or hot pocket :D

Else

Open at the edges it's a toasted sandwich but if cheese is the only ingredient then it's a rather unimaginative toasted sandwich

*this is merely my amateur opinion

if i were to warm up bologna i would not do it in water...hotdogs to me are kind of like bologna, so i either grill it or put in a skillet. buns, do not have to be toasted but if slightly toasted then it reminds me of how the bowling alley around the corner from my house when i was kid used to make them and im instantly transported into gutter balls and arcade game days so i do prefer it.

now, the ultimate dog is baked...with cheese...and chili....buns get toasted in the process so its win win win.

There is some real knowledge in this thread. Way more than average.

gotta steam the bun. that makes the dog!

Yes. Steaming the bun is very good! I like my buns steamed.

When was a kid I would only way hot dogs that were split in half and fried in a pan. To this day I have boiled dogs yuck!

Yes again. My mother would split the hot dog into quarters; opening it up but not cutting through the skin at the quarter points. Then she would really brown them for maximum burn. Over 50 years and I still remember them fondly.

I do like my buns warmed but not toasted thanks.

It's a bun. If it's white bread, it doesn't have much flavor anyway.

Rule #1 to any truly GREAT sandwich/burger/dog is freshly made bread. Bread being a product of fermentation, the key to great flavor in yeast bread is to let the dough ferment as long as possible. Most would be disappointed if they drank a beer which fermented for only 2 hours. The same is true with bread.

Edit: Not dog buns, but here's some of my sandwich rolls for proof :D

I split the roll, healthy spread of butter on the inside and fry it until it's browned, inside only.
Then it's usually Bockwurst, beef chilli and cheese. Eaten with a knife and fork.
The crunch of the bread where it's been fried in the butter stays until the end.

@duff I've never heard of anyone having lettuce on a hot dog but if you like it that way then it must be great tasting. I will have to try that. This summer me and the Mr have been BBQing Bratworst. Lately I've been using a soft bun with mustard. I like to have a few potato chips on the side.
