After a couple of days with the underdog now, i have worked out on the first draw after a break it will give me really really dark dark abv, I have to be careful not to burn it and trying to hit a few in a row the following stems seem to take a lot to get to that color again unless i wait, is this normal ? I have also found that putting the abv through the volcano still gets 2 or 3 decent bags out of it.

Still happy and very glad we purchased it and have not used the volcano apart from my experiment.

I think I have it figured now, I was packing too light and drawing to hard

There may be no answer to this question but I notice that when people recommend logs they usually recommend the enano. I don't understand why. I'm not comparing them but I have most of the logs out there right now that do not need to be imported from Europe. I always return to my underdog. I especially like the choice of several stems. And the presence of the underdog folk here when help is needed.

I do notice that when I look up underdog on google the second link posted in large letters is a comparison between the underdog and enano on FC with the writer preferring the enano. And the positive responses are by enano users who have never tried the underdog. The post ignores the changes and improvements that underdog keeps making. Maybe I answered my own question.

I'll tell you right now why I recommend underdog over enano, and that is the choice of stems. The stainless steel tips are a very nice choice and I use them a lot, but I also like having the choice of glass. In fact, I've used a silicone bowl for the underdog, too.

I'm not trying to knock enano at all.
Anyway, it seems people either love underdog, or they don't.
I have another log, and honestly they both do the job very well, but my underdog is so pretty. Each one is unique and a work of art.

@Krahl Are you using a vvps? When I was using the default power supply, there was a little cool down after a big hit. I got around it by waiting, which also helped me regulate my high, which I like.
Since getting their travel vvps, the dog can run a little warmer, and I never notice a cool down any more. It just chugs. In fact, it can easily get as hot as my Toasty Top gets, which is hot. I highly recommend everyone get one with the heavy duty 15v power supply. It's a game changer. Just don't go too high and you can dim it down and do some pleasant oils, then it's ready in a jiffy when you wanna get high again. Feel me?

The choice of stems is what I love about the UD over the E-nano. The stems are a huge part of the experience. I use all of my stems and just rotate by whatever I feel like at any given time. The stems provide a different experience for each one. It's almost like getting several vapes in one.

I have been looking at the vvps on their site and I am especially interested in the dual option, whetre you can connect two dogs to it. I dont have another dog at the moment but that will change in the near future. I am planning on a custom dog and maybe a pup to go with it:).. Anyway, my next purchase on their site will be a very large order!!

Yeah, choice of stems is great, but so is the overall versatility of 12v logs. Being able to use a dimmer (like the e-nano) OR a VVPS with a display, OR go straight up 12v with no temperture fiddling is great. So is being able to plug it into a 12v battery pack for vaping on the porch or camping. AND (aside from the upcoming alpha) all your stems and power supplies are compatible with most of the other 12v logs, which means if you start being obsessed collecting you have a lot of options to play with.

Just in case you haven't heard, we'll be releasing the first batch of Alpha Dogs pretty soon! If you want to be on the list, and aren't yet, let me know. :)

Here's @Tekhie 's original review post of the first Alpha Dog tester:

http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/underdog-log-vapes.4214/page-590#post-1120624

Now these look intriguing !!!

I was browsing around and noticed a mention of a 7-10 sale coming up. Will accessories be included in this? I was about to order a few new stems today (yay tile floors!!!) but will definitely wait if that's the case :)

Hope all is well with everyone. Happy 4th of July as well!

Heya guys just taking a break from my holiday shenanigans to stop by and say hi... hi. Hope you all have a fun and safe day.

Underdogette and I have been discussing the looming shut down of the shop for our relocation odyssey and how best to deal with packing things up, etc. We've decided that, where possible, we'd just try and sell down inventory instead of packing and carting it with us. To that end the 710 sale will be a lot bigger than we previously planned on.

We now expect it to be one of our biggest sales ever. We're still working out the details but expect something along the following:
  • An economy model called the Classic Dog at never before seen prices. Like the short-lived Econo-Dog but with a classic Standard Core and 12v heating element.
  • Alpha Dogs for all those on the 'reserve' list plus we'll have some extra to put on the website.
  • Awesome priced kits that have matching Dogs and Micros. Fully loaded with stems and VVPS.
  • Oodles of Lost Dogs. Perfect opportunity to adopt a fancier Dog and save a few bucks too.
  • New Direct Draw (nylon) and 14/18 NonG Stems that are compatible with both Standard and Alpha Dogs.
  • Blowout sale on accessories with an unheard of 25% off.
  • Free shipping on all domestic orders over $50.
  • ...and of course as much swag as we can find to stuff in the boxes.

Living in Canada and been looking for a dog for years now. I manage to miss every single sale. Any advice on when to buy? Also, which stems?

Based on my above post I think the upcoming 710 sale (starting on 7/10 and running for 'a while') would be the time to take the plunge. We're discounting things to levels we've never done before and as such expect it to be one of our biggest sales ever.

As far as to what stems... I suggest a variety. Maybe a few Direct Draw in their various forms and then a GonG or NonG for any glass you may want to use now or in the future.

Indeed. We've decided to sell stuff off at our most heavily discounted prices ever so as to not have to pack it and relocate it lol. See my above post for details.

I'll bite and give my reasoning/perspective...

For me, I went with the E-Nano for two reasons...
1.) I had a pretty fair trade offer lol just making a joke as I had already planned on the E-Nano
2.) Warm-up time. This was MY main reasoning for choosing the E-Nano and WS over the UD. I know it is perfectly fine to leave these devices on all the time but I just can't bring myself to leave them on. I am not worried about the unit themselves but rather if something go over the top of them or they fell over, basically careless fire hazard reasons.

I'm not sure what the new Alpha Dog has in store but if the warm-up times was around 5 minutes, I'd be down with the UD. If I have misunderstood this aspect, PLEASE correct me.

@Square4Life

My dogs take less than 5 min to heat up. They advertise a higher heat up time so folks can be pleasantly surprised, because there is some variation depending on thickness, wood type, etc. But generally the heat up time is extremely fast.

I plug mine in, grind some material, pack a stem and it's already warm enough to hit.

Well that is news to me. I had heard you could get whispy hits pretty quickly but it was not producing solid vapor with the ability to take back to back hits until 20 minutes or so. This is just from what I've read and other UD users said, not my personal experience.

Thanks for the information.

Edit: I feel I may have missed out on the UD now knowing the heat up time was exaggerated.

@little maggie - I think it's mostly a result of Underdogette and myself not being particularly suited to the kind of marketing that many consumers respond well to. We rely solely on word of mouth from (hopefully) happy customers and then whatever people see/hear from us here on FC, reddit and our social media.. that's it. We don't do trade shows or run ads or go to conventions or cannabis cup, etc, etc so we don't get a lot of exposure. What little 'advertising' we do put out there, like here and on social media tends to be pretty subdued and minimal on hype. Unfortunately we've discovered that hype goes a long way but it just leaves a bad taste in our mouth so we usually avoid it.

The post from Square4Life is a good example of our failures in advertising. When we 'advertise' our warmup times we use just about the worst case scenario (big/dense Dog, fixed wall-wart power supply, cooler running heater, etc) and then average that and say something like 'most Dogs will be hot and ready to go in 20 minutes' when the reality is most will be ready in 5 minutes, many in only 2-3 minutes. Likewise when we take our photos we deliberately make sure we don't bam them up too much or Photoshop them too much.. we want people to open their packages and find their Dog to be even better looking than they expected instead of a let down compared to a studio perfect, airbrushed photo.

Anyways sorry for the super long-winded response.. interesting subject. :2c:

(As posted above) We tend to advertise worst case scenario averages when it comes to things like heat up times. In reality 80%+ of Underdogs will be ready to use in 5 minutes or less, some of those in as little as 2-3 minutes. 'Aggressive' users with a VVPS and no fucks to give will sometimes push a 1-2 minute heat time but we don't recommend that since it's harder on the Dog but some people are ok with it anyways. :2c:

PS - Heat up time will also vary quite a bit with the different cores we've had over the years. Very old Dogs with a high mass core can take up to an hour to fully heat whereas the newest core, the SC2 is the fastest heating yet. The Alpha heats fast too but has slightly more mass than the SC2 so might take an extra minute or two.

Thanks for the detailed response. I seriously never knew any of this. Just for my information when I'm looking on your site, what would be a denser\bigger log that would take that long to heat up? Or I guess a better question...what can I look for when window shopping to ensure I'd get a log that has the quicker heat up time without sacrificing durability or size?

Yeah, I use the vvps to crank the heat up for a minute or two, lower it to my preference and Bam, thick vapor. Mine is an aircore, though, and it heats up pretty quick anyway. The body isn't hot in five minutes, but the air inside is. About 10 minutes in at regular operating temperature, and the wood is already starting to warm up. I have not actually found it performing any better when the wood is warm, but I do love holding the skinny little thing in my hand.

Even though the photos aren't fancy of the underdogs on the site, I still browse through them every so often. They are pretty. But yeah, even better in real life.

Got mine on a mere 9.75 tonight, gonna sip on some greens and escape with some comedy.

You're very welcome, we're always happy to answer questions or talk shop!

This is a good example of a Dog that would probably take longer to heat up, maybe 15-20 minutes if not 'pushed'. It's on the large size (using the scale of the top bore being 1" to judge overall thickness, etc) and it's a denser wood than most. http://underdogvapes.com/vaporizers/vapes-all/07833

Pretty much all the rest of the available vapes listed on the site are considerably smaller (ie, less mass) and of (in the ballpark) similar density other than the Hybrid Pear which is like balsa wood. I'd say those would all be good candidates for the faster heat up times we've been discussing.

The sweet spot for most users is a Twig sized Dog (approx 2" diameter or less on average) of medium-moderate density. That combination gives the best aggregate of heat up time, heat retention and durability. Pushing too far into the extreme of any one of those variables causes a reciprocal effect in one or more others so we generally try and build most of the ready-made Dogs to land in that aforementioned sweet spot. If people want to get crazy we usually recommend a custom job and try to make sure they have realistic expectations.

Exactly, lots of users happily using their Dogs this way to good effect. Our lower mass cores starting with the Air Core excel that that kind of use and tend to run fast and hot at surprisingly low voltages.

Hey Dogs we'll most likely be putting the 710 sale up tomorrow morning though there's a small chance it goes up late today before we call it quits if we make super good progress.

This sale will be our biggest of the year with lower prices and more fun stuff available than our Sept Birthday Sale even. I know a lot of you didn't plan for it but anyone looking for deals this is your time.

Please feel free to spread the word and help us grow the UD family.
