My pup has been released and is now running my way. Can't wait for it to arrive.

In the meantime, I've been doing some research in regards to the various stems sizes and I haven't been lucky in finding all of the information I want. I could always wait for all my stems to get here, but would like to get a head start on this project.

Could anyone help me with some stem diameter measurements?

I am building a case with a foldable two tier rack for stems ( similar to an artist wood box ) along with a tray to keep them organize while in use at home.

I am looking for the Inside and outside diameter for each stems, ideally from both ends. ( To figure out if I can use hole/slot or a peg for each )

It seems like the glass stems have the same diameter as a micro-test tube. ( 19MM )
But I am not certain of the inner diameter for the Standard and Thick glass stems.
for the nylon ones, I would love to know what is the inner and outer diameter of the SS part along with the Nylon direct draw part.

Marking the hole for the nongs will be easy since they have a standard taper.

Thank you for sharing if anyone has this info on hand or takes the time to do the measurements.

Ok Tekhie here are all the various diameter measurements for you. These are clearance numbers (rounded up/down to the nearest value) and are all in fraction so if you want/need them in decimal or mm you'll need to run them thru an online converter. It's been a long day and it's the best I could manage to manage while managing my remaining ability to adult. :zombie:

Nylon DD: 33/64 OD, 31/128 ID
14mm NonG: 37/64 OD (at widest), 31/128 thru hole
18mm NonG: 97/128 OD (at widest), 31/128 thru hole
SS Tips for above: 5/16 OD, 17/64 ID
Thick Glass DD: 77/128 OD, 25/64 ID
Thin Glass DD: 33/64 OD, 25/64 ID

Hope that's helpful!

I think you'll like the OS NonG.. it's a beastly little guy. Will await your scientific testing for confirmation though.

Sadly, testing was postponed last night. We're playing musical chairs at work today, moving a bunch of us from one office to another, in a rotation, and I didn't want to have too much fun or worry about sleeping in. Hoping I can dust off the lab coat and clown shoes tonight.

The energy readout is watt-hours which is energy used over time.. in this usage I mostly pay attention to the watt field instead which is just a snapshot of energy being used at that particular moment.

With that kind of display real estate you can afford to have all kinds of things up at once anyway. :)

Wow, Sir, you and your significant other (i'm assuming) have both gone above and beyond the level of service i could ever ask for!

Thank you so much for going trough the trouble, your efforts are truly appreciated and i hope this information will help others as well.

I feel like i have gained so much more than the pup i just acquired.

My package has already arrived at its location, but i will have to wait another 2 weeks before i can get my hands on it.

Your assistance will allow me to get its nice new home built before it arrives, so that it can settle in nicely.

Man, that is gonna be a long two weeks, @Tekhie. Good thing you have a project. Hope you share pics of the finished product.

Speeeeeeeaking of, I snapped a little family portrait when I got home from work. I can't start testing the OS NonG just yet because I have laundry that needs doing -- three flights of stairs down, then up, then down again, and up again -- and a shawarma delivery guy to deal with (don't wanna be :whoa: even though I'm sure he's seen it all -- but I also definitely don't want to accidentally tip him $200), but it's coming. My walnut buddy on the left is looking particularly mischievous, calm down pal.

Ok, so I just got the travel vvps and holy shit it's bad ass. First of all, I gotta say, the 15v power supply DOES pack more oompf at 12v than the standard power supply. This aircore just got kicked into overdrive and I love it! I just got my darkest bowl yet from the my UD and it was not a super long draw. I'll share some photos and try and show off with some videos. This is such a worthwhile upgrade for anyone running on a dimmer...and if you're just going straight into the wall...that's good, but I'm telling you what...it's a nice and classy little item and temp control for the underdog was the only snag I was running into. It was hard for me to use glass stems with the aircore and get it as dark as I like it. Not so anymore.

In fact, I'm about to try one of the old school oversized NonGs that didn't perform that great with a lower heat. @underdog you really hit it out of the park with this. I'm loving my dog even more than before (which is saying a lot since I use it literally every day).

EDIT- High as fuck right now. Anyway, only used a direct draw never got out the glass, so I never did test anything else, but I have found that 11v is where I like it now, which still hotter than 12v was before...

Here's a snap of my dog with the new vvps. As you can see it's small Oh and it really speeds the warm up time considerably too.
It seems that the I need to set the vvps 2v lower than the 12v supply with dimmer to get the same heat.
So 10v with the vvps is about equivalent to 12v with the dimmer. Your mileage may vary.

One last thought... Wouldn't it look wicked with a gray case instead of blue?

Hey Dogs (or Dogettes if you prefer) happy 420 to you all! I hope some of you left cookies or something out for VaporSanta since I suspect he has the munchies.

To help celebrate 420 and this awesome community we have a fun contest up and running over in the contest section. Here's a link so you can all get in on the fun!

Thanks Tekhie, we don't always succeed but we always try and give you all the best service possible.. and we love a nice pat on the back (what Dog doesn't?) so thanks for that!

Looking forward to hearing about you getting to put the Dog to use even if it'll be a little while longer yet. Foggy things come to those who wait or something like that right? :brow:

Heya Diggy, awesome man thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty excited about the new power supplies and I hope I don't run into any supply issues like I did last time I tried to make something in house. It's really frustrating to make something you like, especially after going thru all the time and trouble to work out a design only to have the factory/company abandon the components or quality to tank, etc. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen again.

I think these ones are pretty savage too. I don't want to delve too deeply into the design and give away all my hard earned IP but suffice it to say that the performance comes from a better voltage stepping algorithm plus we've tripled the pole flux. That combined with running the flux capacitors in series and then paralleling that with the zero point diode really makes for a boost! :freak:

Seriously though thanks, I'm happy with it so far and glad to hear that you Dogs out there are feeling it too. Funny you mention a gray case, I was actually looking for one (in that same model) but haven't found it yet. A grey case with red display would look pretty mean I think. :borg:

My first dog had eyes (Mr Walnut Mischief), and given that it was from a birthday-vape litter, I didn't know about them until I opened the box (in the parking lot after picking it up from the post office, couldn't wait :) ). So when you and Underdogette sent me a picture of my first custom and it had eyes too...

But yeah, zebrawood glulam always worrying about his darn taxes or something.

Happy 4/20 everyone!

Got my dog a couple days ago. Had an opportunity to test it out and I had some questions.. after initial heat up time 20+mins directly plugged into the wall I'm noticing after using the log the heat needs to re-soak to get a nice dark brown avb...Also I use the 18mm NonG with my HT... Does not flipping the log over create more heat? I don't understand how if it's plugged in and I take one pull how it cools down so fast.. pretty sure I got a SC2 should I have went with SC1.. also I forgot to ask to put an oring on. Would this have concentrated more heat.. ? It's a beautiful wild burl dog.. maybe the wood doesn't retain much heat. Idk man. TIPS? SuGGESTIONS.? Help me out dogs

Edit: should I not Rip on it.. cfv air restriction is tighter so I find myself ripping harder since my lungs are already accustomed to that technique

You got the first thing to change..........adjust your draw speed to your dog's characteristics......experiment. No 2 dogs are alike, no technique is alike. One of the subtle beauties of analog vaping.

Ordered my dog with an SC2 core since i wanted to start with the latest iterations. But could anyone explain the major differences in between an SC1 and SC2 core along with advantages/disadvantages if any?

Edit, found this higher up:

Lots of small differences, a few 'big' differences. Unless we talked to you about it and offered you a SC2 then yeah it's almost certain your new Dog has a SC1. I'll copy/past my post from January on the differences we've made to the vapes in the past year or so and then differences to the SC2 project specifically.

::repost of earlier post:: (original here)

Recent changes we've made in the past year or two:
- started laser cutting/drilling core components on the lathe as compared to the mechanical cutting/drilling we'd been doing for years. The resulting parts are 'nicer' and the much more precisely sized/shaped airflow ports deliver better, more consistent convection to the heater and then the material.
- changed the design for our custom made stainless heating elements with a different heating pattern (to take advantage of the laser parts mentioned above) and lighter mass mounting technique.
- shaved off some mass from the Standard and Air Cores to take advantage of heating element changes.
- optimized design to reduce the amount of heat radiated and conducted to the wooden body by a significant amount.
- finalized the move to an inert, durable and safe all stainless steel air path. The core components, heating element and screens are all stainless, no mismatched materials.

Coming changes to the Standard Core:
- slight tweaks to the laser cut parts to squeeze a little more performance out of the airflow.
- further reductions in mass, combined with newly optimized heating elements for more agile temperature response to changing power levels.
- optimize design further to double the reduction of radiated/conducted heat to the wooden body and trap that heat in the core where it's needed.
- even faster heat up time and recovery between hard hits.
- air inlets modified to better direct airflow where it's needed and to better isolate the material in a loaded stem from unintentional heating.

Please add to it if anyone has any additional details. Thank you!

I know i am new the the pack, but i do have various 18mm water pieces, a nice VVPS and extensive prior experience in making questionable choices. Space veteran, have completed many lifts and re-entry burns.

I also have a nice test bench dual variable voltage DC power supply, i am willing to sacrifice myself to conduct experiments and report back for the greater good of the pack.

I just received my dog last night and it's amazing! I would like to thank underdog and underdogette for providing exceptional service and product!

Kind of a newb question but can someone explain how the dimmer works exactly? I understand you can only lower voltage/temperature so you cannot increase it.

So when i plugged it in the dog, the LED screen shows 10.0v. When I turn the dial up so that it reaches 11.5v, is the dog heating up to the 11.5v? Because that's increasing the temperature but the dimmer can't do this right?

I believe the stock DC power supply provided is a 12v. You should be able to turn it up all the way to 12v, from what i can see you can also use a 15v power supply with a VVPS to boost the heat a bit.

Could be useful if you want to do concentrates, but they do not recommend that you run a log above 12v permanently.

So if you do use higher voltage with another power supply, never leave it running above 12v for a prolonged periods of time when you are not using it.

Here is some details from their FAQ: ( http://underdogvapes.com/vvps-links )

To get the most out of your Underdog experience, we strongly suggest you read and follow these simple instructions.
  1. Start at 11-12v and let your vape fully warm up. Most UDs reach full temperature by 20 minutes.
  2. Adjust your voltage up or down (guide below) as needed. Allow 1-2 minutes for your UD to stabilize at the new temp before making further adjustments.
  • Do not run at greater than 13v for prolonged periods of time.
  • Do not run at 14v for more than 5 minutes at a time (resistor vapes), and only if absolutely needed. Do not run stainless heater cartridge vapes at 14v ever.

Sounds like you might be drawing too fast so I'd start there. UDs and Logs in general are most effective with longer, slow/smooth draws instead of a 'ripping' draw. After that adjustment I'd make sure you're not over packing the stem, sometimes people try and load too much thinking it'll make for more vapor but it's frequently the opposite. Lastly if neither of those two help much you might need to let it heat up a bit longer to fully heat saturate the wood (the core comes up to temp in 2-3 minutes) so it doesn't drag the core temp down by conduction. :science:

Keep us all posted so we can help you get your setup all dialed in and on the bus to foggy town.

Welcome aboard, glad you're enjoying things so far! The dimmer can only adjust down from it's source input voltage (minus .25v to .5v or so for overhead) so for example with a 12v power supply attached you'll get that 11.5v max. The 10v value is already dimmed down from the max which is why you were able to go up from there. Hope that makes sense?

I read the FAQ but im just confused about increasing the voltage/temperature. Like with the dimmer, you can't increase the temperature/voltage once you plug it into the dog. So in other words, dimmers can only lower the voltage/temperature. But what if for example I started the dog at 12.0V and then I accidentally turned the dial and the voltage went down to 11.0V. Then I move turn the dial to 12.5V. Would my dog increase in voltage/temperature?

Not sure if I am understanding this correctly. Please correct me if I'm viewing this wrong.

Ah, I see, sorry I misunderstood your question I guess.

Whatever the screen displays is what the dimmer is passing out to the Dog and you can adjust it with or without the Dog connected.

When we say you can't increase the voltage we just mean above what your wall-wart puts in (ie, 12v for the standard one). You can adjust up or down just not up above that source level.

So in your example if you started at 12v, accidentally turned it down to 11v and then moved it up to 12.5v your Dog would have run at a different temperature at each voltage. Hot, cooler then hotter.

Does this make more sense?

Thank you!! That clears everything up!

I knew I had some misunderstanding.

All along I kept thinking that the voltage that I start with once I connect my dog would be the highest temp that I can achieve. Where if I accidentally lower it, the new voltage would become the highest temperature and I cannot increase it past this new temperature. Thanks for the clarifcation!

Cant wait to use my dog again tonight!!
