Still vaping with the glass vape. I actually just got some parts in for the new new new one last week.

Things have been a bit crazy the last few months but the storm has cleared. I am now in the shadow of mt Rainier and can vape all kinds of lovely leaf in peace.

I also hope to continue making vapes in peace too. I'll put up a vid of the current configuration this week!

New glass though!

I was using an off the shelf part for the handle before.

The new glass handle was made to be shorter and has a spot to properly hold a 1" screen. The cotton is there to keep the dust out.

Nothing crazy or fancy, but it feels nice and does the job.

The herb looks dark because it is purple.. It is called Ace of Spades and was grown by the sunshine co-op. This was the random cheap stuff from up the road. The packages says the THC is 16.16%.

This was my first test shot with the new glass and it is making want a macro lens.

I am happy the top joint will no longer touch herb so it will stay cleaner in the future.

Low temp hit, about 80f lower than the previous gif. This is DJ Short's Flo grown by Elements.

I am trying to go for very little cooking of leaf and a nice extraction in one breath. ABV color be damned.

After forever, I finally put a bunch of parts inside a box.


A quick zip through the interface.

I am getting a drop in voltage that is causing the temps to jump after an interaction. I think I need to look at my wiring or simply hide the temp for a 1/10sec after a touch. Seems worse now that it is not hooked to my pc? Maybe I need more voltage to the arduino. Ugh, now I need to open the box. That was quick.

I really need to live with this for a bit because a new heater is on the menu! I am making an XLR sub 100w version. I already have the custom heaters with the type K probe inside. I am going to wire that up to the chinese pid until I make a new arduino box with type k and pt100 probes.

My second go at reading the temps inside near the heater. The first time the probe port was too far away. On these new ones the port is spot on. I just hooked this glass up to my new controller and the results so far are snappy.

I fixed my voltage drop with the touchscreen- it was the USB connector on the converter. The solder was breaking off from my repeated pulls. All good now. This vid shows how it's supposed to work.


I take a draw around 35 sec. I've got the 60w in there and the pid is really just a P right now. Gonna tune a bit more and then try a 250w.

I hope to use these adapters with the probe inside to evaluate the XLR heaters.

XLR glass vape news: I only have a few heaters with a K probe inside, but so far things are looking nice. The temp probes on all are within 2 degrees of each other. Before I put some heat in them I was curious about how they would respond inside the glass and surrounded by transfer paste. Holding the glass in my hand the temp went up in 15 seconds. I next inserted the assembled heater into the main adapter and breathed one breath through the intake; It took a 8 seconds for an increase that way. I think I am getting good readings through the glass (better than expected anyways). The true test is vaping with it and that is up next.

This was just fantastic to read though! Hopefully you'll get pinged, but I just wrote my first post about a halogen-based design. I really wanted a glass path, also used labware, and so I thought I'd say "Hi." I'm not very labware savvy, so if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'll try and add a sketch of what I think would be really cool to my post in a day or so. I can't figure out of bottom up or top down would help, what's the best way to get a screen or something into mine or what.

It was also not easy to get my thermistor where I wanted it... did you drill the hole for the red/black wires in your pic above, or did that come like that?

I might have missed it, but can you talk to your temp control? I found I could target 210C, and assuming my thermistor is accurate, all should be well. But I didn't get any vapor like that. Would I need to be going much hotter than this due to cooling from intaking room temp air past my heat source? Or would i just move my sensor closer to the bud (maybe it's waaaay cooler than I think by the time it goes that next 0.25-0.5" from the sensor to the weed)? Perhaps your beads are the magic here, to prevent such rapid drops. I guess, is it a thermal mass issue, or a control issue you think I might have?

The glass was custom made. There is a tiny glass tube that goes inside and is placed near the heater's hotspot. I have a pt100 probe against the wall of it.

For sure! If I removed all the beads I can still vape, but I get a spot. The more mass, the more heat it has.

It looks like you are measuring directly on the bulb. I've tried this vape measuring the temp inside the heater, on the outside of the glass, and inside a glass port near the heater. The feedback you get is different from each spot, but all let me vape. That's really it? I use an arduino breakout board for the pt100 probe. Tuning an arduino's pid settings can be a pain.

If I had to guess, I think your temps are too low. I heat glass to 430-520 on the outside to hit vaping temps. The cartridge heater is running 600-700 on the inside to hit vaping temps.

Wow! 600-700?? I went with a thermistor for cost's sake and I didn't need anything complex to read it. I would have to take the approach of measuring just before or after the herb then... I'd be controlling to target temps in a much cooler zone, but would have the effect of getting the bulb area much hotter to hit that. That's the only way I can think of to control but stay with my current stuff (thermistor is only rated to 300C).

Good to know on custom glassware. I may see if I can utilize something commercial (vape replacement parts are looking promising) as labware kind of stinks! The joints are so long, hard to get at, etc. I can see why you would have gone custom :)

I'll try some extra mass/surface area and give round 2 a go in a little bit :)

wham - 700F. Glass can go to a couple hundred F higher with no issue so I've got some wiggle.

So I've been enjoying the flavor of a lower temp (615f with the XLR) and thought I'd take a peek at what's cooking. I've taken pics of ground herb and whole nugs but never a single calyx. I figured it would be a quick way to see where the vaping is stopping without lots of waste.

I found a few plump calyces sticking to a stem. Here is a pic before and after a 5 second lung draw.

I did this a few times and thought the pics from this run came out nice.

The results are what I hoped for - melted heads and left over stalks/non-glandular trichomes. That shit melts on the second hit at this temp. I see the same from ground herb too, lots of stalks floating around after the 1st draw. The fact that there is very little flavor on the second hit kinda backs up what I am seeing.

I really need to get a cheapy usb microscope. These shots were a bit zoomed by the camera software. Must get closer.....
