I'm still high 24 hours later

I've been messing around lately, trying to make very small batches of canna-oil. Since I still feel kind of fucked up from the stuff I ate 26 or 27 hours ago (especially because I haven't used any cannabis today), I figure I must have done something right and I ought to share what I did. Mods: If there is somewhere more appropriate for this thread, please move it there.

Here's what I did:
  1. Ground 3 g of herbs.
  2. Decarbed herbs in oven for an hour, using a small ceramic dish covered with aluminum foil at 240°F.
  3. Melted 60 g of coconut oil in a small sauce pan.
  4. Added ground herbs to oil.
  5. Mostly left my oil alone for about eight hours, over a very low flame.
  6. Poured through cheesecloth into plastic bowl. (I added a little bit of water to the bowl so the solidified oil would come out easily, in one piece.)
  7. Refrigerated.
Since I know I used 20 times as much oil as herbs, I can easily figure dosage. For example, yesterday I ate 6 g of oil. 6 grams of oil divided by 20 = 0.3 g dose.

Since I'm pretty new at this, I welcome all critiques. If I did something wrong, don't be afraid to slam me. My objective is to do it right.

That looks good dude and good point regarding dosage - when I make it I never really weigh out proper and tend to shoot from the hip. Makes for either no high really or am destroyed. I also use AVB so I don't decarb it. But other than that the methodology is about the same.

I have a big pot I fill with mostly water. Then I put my coconut oil and AVB in a mason jar, I put the mason jar in the hot water on the stove for like 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally. I always read that long and slow time was good but I've read that you don't really need to do it that long, I haven't had a chance to try a quicker cook yet. Strain through cheesecloth when done and refrigerate. Yours looks good and very similar!

I liked cooking with it and also would throw little bits in my coffee which was pretty awesome, you couldn't really taste anything but it did kind of make your lips a bit oily after drinking.

So if you use a cheesecloth the coconut oil doesn't taste like ass? I've only used a sieve/strainer, and could not tolerate the taste because I would get an instant gag reflex

Nice work Ryan! So simple yet effective...love the ability to know your dosage!! Gold!

I'm inclined to think that by simmering in oil only instead of oil and water, decarbing should not be necessary. Also, it would be cool if I could get the same high for only two or three hours, instead of like forever. I felt like this was more of what I want as a medical effect, but it got kind of old after a few hours.

I use the following process:
  1. Grind 1g of herbs (doesn't take much for me).

  2. Melted 60-80ml of coconut oil in a mini crock pot. (smell is somewhat contained but don't do this in a house share unless all residents are cool with it).

  3. Add ground herbs to oil.

  4. Cook oil for about twelve hours in the mini crockpot. (put it on in the morning, done by late evening). I don't bother decarbing when following a long cook method.

  5. Line potato ricer with cheese cloth.

  6. Drop the mixture into potato ricer/cheese cloth.

  7. Fold the cheese cloth over the material.

  8. Squeeze and tilt until all the oil is strained out into a 'Beaker Measuring Cup 100ml'.

  9. If the oil needs topping up a little due to losses during the cooking and straining processes then add it now.

  10. I then use a pipette to fill capsules using 'THE CAPSULE MACHINE'. It works OK but only does 24 caps at a time, I'm on the lookout for a 100 capsule machine, there are a few on ebay.
Capsules are great, no icky taste to have to worry about, repeatable experience and fairly easy to fill once you get used to the process.

I'll have to get one of those potato ricers. That way I won't waste 15% of my oil squeezing it by hand. An alternative to capsules is to use a candy mould. I bought some capsules a couple years ago. I can barely use them, due to manual dexterity issues. I don't remember my moulded pieces tasting any different than normal coconut oil.

There has been interesting discussion recently about capsules not being as effective as straight up coconut oil without them. Something about where in the gut it's absorbed?

Love this thread! Looking forward to including edibles in my future and this is helping!

Yeh the ricer works a treat.

You are right about dexterity, it gets a little tricky, especially when tired.

To be honest I've only ever done the capsules and not tried the actual oil directly. The caps seem to work for me but I can see how it isn't for every one.

This is quite an interesting read about shoving AVB directly into a capsule, it's worth going directly to the article as the comments section has some interesting points:

Capsule Warning: The AVB Experiment That Went Wrong (Author: Old Hippie - BeyondChronic)
A few days ago, after I wrote that article about AVB, I decided to eat some straight AVB, without benefit of a meal or extraction into oil, so it would just be the AVB itself with no lipids to help or hinder it. I wanted to see how that would affect the absorption speed and whether it would be as strong as eating it with fatty food. Since I knew it would taste kinda bad, I put it into a capsule. And since my wife can only use capsules or edibles, I tamped it way down into the capsule, just to give me an idea of how much would fit in there if she needed a larger dose.

Well, I learned a lot from that experiment, including that it can take four solid hours to feel the effects and that it’s not necessarily THC, dehydration, or low blood sugar that cause you to green out!

Here is the exact log I wrote during the experience, followed by plenty of explanation:

"OK so as an experiment I took 1/4 tsp of ABV at 6:15 pm in a capsule, not near a meal.

Almost nothing happened until an hour or so ago, complained to my wife that it wasn’t nearly enough because i only felt around a [2] and there’s less chance of getting high with ABV, so I could easily go to a [4] without worrying about being too high.

Now it’s 10 pm and it just kicked in. holy shit, my body is a [7] and my head is about [4], but my perception is way off. my body feels weird and my arms look skinny and time dilation. the whole package feels like a [8.5], but not uncomfortable just rather weird.

The worst part is I just ate another 1/4 teaspoon on my salad 5 minutes ago!

(it tasted great BTW)"

Some elucidation is needed here. I ate more than an hour before taking the capsule and didn’t eat for at least an hour afterwards, to let the capsule get digested at its own pace as much as possible. I do have to eat every two hours or so, and I ate and drank at regular intervals. I was totally feeling fine (and continuing to get higher) until nearly 11 PM. Point is, I wasn’t dehydrated or overly hungry (most people report at least one of these conditions after every greenout).

A bit after 11 PM, I started to feel decidedly bad. Like approaching greenout. I alerted my wife and sat down on the kitchen floor. She got my handy-dandy blood pressure tester and I managed to record an astoundingly low 88/48 right before I couldn’t sit up any more.

I kept breathing very slowly and carefully while laying on the floor, and luckily did not pass out (my wife would have called 911, you betcha). But it was pretty damn scary, and the closest I’ve ever come to passing out without actually doing it.

I can say this categorically though: if I had been anywhere near this high, I would have passed out for sure. The fact is (neuroscience nerds alert) that because of all the THC burned off in the pass through my vaporizer, I wasn’t actually feeling any higher (in my head, that is) than a [4]. Normally, when I do go up past [7], almost any kind of little physical problem will cause my mind to go into a panic feedback loop and make me feel like I’m about to pass out. Yet there I was, lying on the floor and calmly coming up with ideas for my family to help me with (cold washcloths on my forehead and stuff like that). But this time it was “just physical”. I was having these physical problems from some kind of overdose-like effect (which I will explain presently), but I wasn’t high enough for them to trigger a panic attack.

Hell, just looking up “human digestive system” on Wikipedia for some extra information today made me queasy.

Oh, and the extra dose on my salad? I felt that kick in around 2 AM, but it wasn’t a big deal. I can’t really quantify it, but it was more or less what I would have expected from 1/4 teaspoon of loose AVB sprinkled on my salad (rather than tamped down tightly into a capsule).

Anyway, I had some suspicions about what caused this — it certainly wasn’t the dose itself, since 1/4 teaspoon of AVB should not do this to me at all — so I had to do a number of experiments. Double-blind they are not, but the results make sense.

The first thing I did was to simply try the exact same dose — 1/4 teaspoon of AVB — on my pizza, to compare it to the 1/2 teaspoon I had used to test dosing for the Pot Pizza article. Sure enough, it was a light [3] or so, about half the results of the larger dose. No problem.

But my hypothesis is that it wasn’t the amount of the dose, it was the physical characteristics. Except for some powdered hash capsules I tried two years ago, all the capsules I’ve been taking have contained either one of my coconut oil extractions (aka Canna Caps), or loosely-stuffed plant dregs from one of my oil extractions.

This time, the AVB was tightly packed and almost like a powder. And I think that it all tended to hold together in my gut, so it all hit my bloodstream in a rush (Update: chem_monkey on reddit explains how this could work). My Canna Caps never work that way; in fact, they reliably work in 45 minutes every time for me with no surprises and consistently get me to the same level, again every time.

So today I put 1/8 teaspoon of AVB into a capsule, trying to pack it in tightly. Then I realized there wasn’t even enough AVB for my tamper to reach the top of the pile. So I poured some Spirulina powder down there to fill the gaps (it’s not good for your head, just good stuff in general And I took it, and I waited.

Not a damn thing for three hours.

Suddenly, there it was. And it wasn’t anywhere near the next-to-nothing [1.5] or so I could reasonably expect from a tiny dose as this, but definitely around [6]. Note: I’m talking about an estimated “total experience level”, since as I’ve noted, AVB’s “head effect” is lessened due to the removed THC, so you’re getting nowhere near as high per se as you normally would. In fact, I had to lay down for awhile before it went away.

So, even though this is all kind of rough estimates, it still make sense. If “compressing the charge” in a capsule gives this turbo effect as if you took four times the actual dose, what would the same effect applied to 1/4 teaspoon have? Answer: it would be the equivalent of a full teaspoon, or around level [12]! That fits, both in terms of what actually happened to me, and my highness level the last time I greened out (which was not on AVB, but also at least [12]).

Of course, if you’re a recreational user, a light bulb probably just lit up over your head. But MMJ patients, and anyone over 40, should be careful with attempting to stuff AVB into capsules.

TL;DR: taking AVB plain, or even in a capsule,
doesn’t increase the effect — but tightly packing it together does.

Note: I don’t want to worry people unduly, because (a) I am more susceptible to this problem due to my delightful vasovagal sensitivity and (b) I am also on beta blockers and lots of other things that lower my blood pressure. But if either of these might apply to you, or you’re in some kind of poor health, be very, very careful with stuffing capsules too tightly!

P.S. Uptokes to my wife and son for looking after me…my son even stayed up watching TV with me until 4 AM to make sure I was OK!

That's a great idea rodders! It's been a while and i've never used moulds but sounds perfect.

I tried mixing mine in with chocolate and it was quite vile, however that was back in the days when I used ABV as well. I'll never do that again, hated the feeling...almost like an incomplete high with an emphasis on anxiety and feeling ill.

Looking forward to testing some of your techniques!

My favourite way of consuming edibles would be gummy bears! But i'd probably need to eat a hundred of them. Gelatin is supposed to be pretty healthy too.

As a tight ass i do not strain why strain good weed? Eat the whole thing and do what i did if you gag which i do a lot. so i freeze it mould capsule shapes and swallow. No expensive caps this way either!
I have never strained when using ABV, but I have been straining lately, with fresh herbs. I don't mind leaving the herbs in the oil, but it's so much nicer without them, psychologically. However, that requires straining, which can easily cause you to lose 10-20% of the finished oil if you're not careful. If I ever stop being high from what I ate yesterday, maybe I'll leave in the herbs with my next batch.

One thing I find interesting is the taste of the strained herbs. Very salty. Unlike ABV, which tastes like cardboard. Which is pretty much what it is.

I've mixed my cannaoil with melted Ghiradelli dark chocolate squares and used a candy mold. I actually think it tastes better than the chocolate by itself. And melted into my morning coffee is really good.

I was thinking about doing exactly that, with some very dark Ghiradelli chocolate chips/drops I have. Just not today.

@biohacker it is the only way i can do it with my ocd minimalism the moulds would bother me i would have to clean more things, Own moulds capsules whatever all i own is a pyrex dish it all goes in mixed and bing bada boom into the greaseproof paper which afterwards is used or dumped so hurrah for no cleaning!

You simply have to let the mix get cold, Use a spoon to put some in the paper and roll it like a blunt essentially you are making an AVB blunt, And just make a notch with a knife and put the stick in the freezer. Now when you want to dose go snap a bit off and swallow it with some water. I still gag and still get the taste but i can do it and got quite mellow and light after some with the telltale silky feet feeling but as of yet i have not taken a big dose maybe tomorrow i will try the problem is the swallowing and gag reflex.

@Aimless Ryan cardboard hmm interesting i must sniff again but i have had roast chicken smells too i think obviously everyones roasted avb will taste different but i actually am starting to like it, Infact unstrained im burping and high within an hour or two of taking it and it seems to persist for a bit and always makes me laugh. Infact it was a burp followed by pure laughter that first let me know i was getting high off avb but as of yet no farts! I can imagine a big group session where everyone is burping farting and laughing!

Here is another method I have found works just as well as the crock pot method imo:

(I have only made batches in terms of about 4 oz. trim material to about 16 oz. butter, so you can extrapolate for your preferred batch size.)

Anyways, with this method you take butter and melt it into an appropriate pan that will also accommodate the herbs.

When the butter has maybe 3/4 melted, turn the heat down as low as possible, and add the herb.

Simmer, stirring occasionally for about 7-8 minutes.

Take entire mixture, herb and butter, spatula into a container and put that into the refrigerator. I like a small Pyrex dish for this step personally.

Allow 24-36 hours to pass. This will allow infusion to fully occur.

Take the herb/butter mixture back out, re-melt it and then strain through cheesecloth or whatever manner you choose to filter out the herb.

Refrigerate the resulting filtered oil again and use as desired.

Have done both the crock pot and this method many times over the years, and they both work great.

One thing I like about a quick simmer and then refrigeration though, is that there is much less smell involved, as you are only simmering on low heat for a very short time and letting the fridge do the rest of the work, so for those in areas where smell might be of issue, this method might be preferable. (still some smell involved, be warned, just much shorter duration.)

I melted 4 g of my oil (equivalent to 0.2 g of herbs, maybe) with five or six Ghiradelli dark chocolate drops in a candy mould. Refrigerated. I was just gonna bite off a corner. Which I did. It was so good. I was going to put it back in the fridge for tomorrow, but I just couldn't resist. I ate the rest of it. That was about half an hour ago. Probably not a smart idea. I better post this reply before I forget how.

One thing I found when I used edibles back in the day is that they completely fucked up my tolerance.

I probably won't have to worry about that. I think I'm going to have to stop using cannabis (for a while or indefinitely) after tonight's dose.
