Discontinued MistVape Touch

I'm not complaining and I'm in the waiting list for the MVT, that should say a lot. But if a simple coil geometry improvement can fix the problem (provided there really is one, and that it can't be fixed by proper technique alone, hence my initial question) then it should be attempted.

The OG Project was barely usable for me, and a simple change to the coil made the Eraser version much more enjoyable (yet still not as good as some other vapes)

My Milaana could scorch at first but there was no real defined hot spot, it was diffuse. Since the accident, I think the heater got warped a bit and it now creates a clear offset hotspot/zone. I have to rotate the stem after every hit or two like you do, and it makes me appreciate the experience much less. So much that it's not the vape I grab by default anymore. My love affair with it is over I'm afraid.

When you get hotspots or some light charring, the taste is spoiled pretty fast. You can stir how much you want, it's not restoring the taste that you get when you never push too far. The Zion is incredible in that regard, as the taste stays delicious until very far into the session, and even just before I dump the ABV the taste is never as gross as with my other units.

When you come from conduction vapes with digital temperature control, you get used to the fact that every temperature level gives you a particular taste, up to the roasted ones of the higher levels. So your brain tends to use that as a cue to know when it's over. With convection vapes as soon as you get some charring, you get the impression that the load is almost done too, even if you just started! Couple that with the fact that the material gets brown faster... This leads to a strange situation where I find that my sessions are shorter, giving me the false impression that the vape extracts faster than others, whereas in the end I extracted less because I stopped too early due to the "it's soon over" cue!

Dave has been improving his product steadily since the launch, I'm confident this trend will continue. And we're not talking about any drastic change in the build, just probably some tweaks on the coil and/or air intake path (because the size, amount and location of the air intakes do play a HUGE role too in the air flow dynamics inside the system)

I agree with @KeroZen , hotspots are avoidable! With my beta test Touch there was no so concentrated hot spots, after a few hits (and rotate) there was a dark ring lighter in color in the center (where is the airflow) and taste didn't degrade so fast. So, imho, the beta unit was more conservative with load and didn't cash it in a few hits like the new version does. Maybe that's cause of the new coil design which heat faster and hotter, this is perfect for wax/kief/hasch but less for flowers. my production unit coil is not flat and seems to create an hotspot where it is bent up.

Actually I'm using more the Mist (other vape Mistvape did before the Touch) and enjoy a no stirring true convection experience. If i use unground buds I flip them at mid session but I don't need to crush them. The coil he used was totally different (similar to a FF coil or to the incoming Square's coil). That's still not a no-brainer since you have to rotate also.

But the Touch rest very nice and I can get some "easy" sessions with a small load and only rotate the stem. But definitly not a vape you can use at work... at least for my job! Without to mention how most vapes are not easy to use in public cause, where I live, most peoples have never seen even an e-cig before... One of my friends was suspecting me to drink alcohol while he saw me vaping on the Guru!

Yeah so I can get this with my newer Touch too (it is not the latest style, but similar to the beta body appearance, with the newer coil like the current units though) which definitely runs hotter/faster than the older parabola coil, which I liked a lot too, I guess it has an easier learning curve. However the new coil is more capable, you just need to tame it a bit I guess, definitely depends on how you trigger and how you draw (and pack ofcourse!)

I also could get hotspots with my old beta, and even the original big boy Mist where I stir a lot too, but yeah it's regulation helps a while lot to limit the learning curve e and make it more capable (heater is totally unique too, not like any other vape). There is a big factor in that the Touch is unregulated, so it makes sense people can have trouble, especially considering the handcrafted variables of every part, but that consistency will get better and better over time. There still aren't even that many of these in the wild yet? The rolling upgrades have be swift and steady, should get better and better, already pretty great!

@turk I wasn't feeling like the target but what you say is true across the board. It's like the fastest gun in the west myth. You are only the fastest till your not, and things only look perfect for a while. Still they are pretty good and even if the fastest gun is going down I ain't trying to be the take down guy.
@KeroZen the coil geometry was something that I came up with early on with paytonpenn's help. I think that Vape Dr. zeroed in on the tilting as a good way to even out the heating. I thought I had it nailed down and could adjust just by looking but I'm going to have to test each one. I got some hemp fiber coming and hopefully that will change color as it heats then I can use a vacuum pump to suck the heated air through and check the load. This technique works nicely if I use herb but then I can only adjust a couple units at a time and for some reason I kinda end up doing something else.
I really think this batch is going to be sweet.

Thanks @NizzyJones but I already looked at this web site and can't seem to find them.

Well I did find that title but was 10mm and I think the MVT takes 14mm tapered?

Yeah, the ID of the glass in those turbo tubes is 10mm but it's the silicone that's actually meeting and sealing with the glass joint if you use it with the touch. I would not expect it to be stable to leave it in that way but I don't have one to test.

Actually the OD of the glass is 10mm, but you are correct the silicone provides the seal with the MVT. The turbo tube has advantages.
1. provides a flexible seal with the MVT opening.
2. should be easy to rotate the stem between vapes.
3. good flexibility with screens, load size, and recess from the heat source.
4. Alan provides a storage tube with the turbo.

The big downside of the turbo tube is that it is ugly. I want one anyway! I would suggest that @mistvaporizer add one to his parts list.

On another note I am hoping the hot spot issue is improved before my number comes up. It is sad to hear of good weed being scorched.

@KeroZen you totally nailed it with describing coming from a temp regulated vape to the MVT. i think I'm cashing a lot of bowls way to early cause its so easy to get that slightly charred taste and brown colour. I'm also finding it takes the portable factor away a bit since using the double screen method forces you to use microdose amounts of flower - its a constant stirring and repacking bowls to get where i want...

working on a design for a stem that will keep the herb farther from the heater. I'll post pics when I have something. When I say working on it I mean I'm thinking about how to make one and have some designs in mind.
Bought an oscillating spindle sander, sort of porn looking. It is a phallic sanding rod that rotates and moves up and down. I'll try to post a video, kind of funny. It works great, I can smooth out the radius of the cutout pretty easily now. For $100 it is the best tool I've bought in a while. Got the Wen brand, never heard of them but they have been around for a long time. They are in Illinois so there's a chance it was assembled in the U.S. but I don't know that for sure.

Made a new stem, I used one of Alan's wooden stems. Cut off the tapered section so I just had 1/4" of taper left.

The glass tube forms the seat for the screen so you can adjust the depth of the stem by moving the glass tube. This keeps the herb farther away from the heat source. I got very nice results without scorching.

I rotate every couple hits. I emptied the stem, stirred and repacked. There was no vapor production from the stirred abv. Seems the first go around got it all, even though the stem shows some greenish sections.

Here is the abv

I'll try to make some of these up and get them to testers.

It looks like you used a single screen. Nice and easy. Please don't ask us to buy from someone else. If this bears out you need to offer as an option.

I finally had some time to go pick up the screens @mistvaporizer sent me and do some testing. I appreciate the extras BTW. To my surprise, fitting the screen in the female joint wasn't difficult at all. Just dropped it in and used a 14/23 to ease it into place.

Now, paired with the low profile screens, the heat seems to be much more evenly diffused across the load. It's signicantly reduced the hot spotting problem for me. With the right draw technique it's entirely avoidable now. It also seems to have helped vapor production because the load is being more evenly heated. It is less efficient on battery use but it's a worthwhile trade-off for the results I'm getting. Of course my experience is anecdotal and YMMV, but I would recommend the cap screens if you're not using them.

@Little Bill I deferred to Alan on the wood stems because people wanted them and I just don't have time to make them. Since these are my design I'll try to make them.
I have done a few more bowls with this and I like it a lot. Gives the hot air some room to even out and while I still see hot spots just rotating the stem seems to work fine.

hey @mistvaporizer ,
it looks like the inner screen inside the glass female fell a bit below and now touches the heater..
how to fix this?
i cannot seem to be able to lift the screen back from the outside..
but opening the device from below seems too complicated.

tnx..

I had the same problem recently, and was able to grab the screen from above with a skinny pair of scissors (didn't have small enough pliers). You can use the vape without a screen (per @mistvaporizer) but I was able to get it back in place (or close to it) by pushing it with a stem. I don't think it's all the way to it's intended location, but it's working fine and hasn't moved after a week or two.

hmm.. i hope i'll manage to do that.
scissors you say?
now i know that when i clean it with the brush i shouldn't push hard.
