Gmail addresses for your FC account

Noobie question here but are there any known issues trying to use a gmail email address for FC? I spent the last week or so unable to post and unable to receive a confirmation email to my Gmail account. Tried switching it to a Gmail hosted alternate domain- a new account with no filters - and was still unable to receive it.

I finally gave in and plugged in an old Hotmail address a few minutes ago and received the confirmation email immediately. Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong?

Yeah, recently (like the last month or so?) the issue of gmail not working w/ FC has come up... It's funny, I totally forgot about it, and yesterday decided to change my primary email to a Gmail, since I'm using a chromebook now and it makes you sign in w/ a gmail acct.. and it took me a bit to realize why I wasn't getting any PM email alerts, and why my new email wouldn't confirm, and why the like, quote, and reply buttons were missing from each post even though I was logged in.. I actually just realized why a few hours ago  What I did, is I figured out how to funnel my old email address's emails into my Gmail account and I just changed my FC email back to my old one.. seems to take a bit longer to get my email alerts, but it works, so at least now I can use one email, although I have 2 operating together.. again, the only reason I did that was because I'm using a chromebook now and it's just more convenient for me this way..

Yep, there are a couple of ISPs that will not allow anything with 'fuck' in the domain name to get through. You won't even find them in your spam folder, they just spike them upon receipt (or reject them prior to receipt).

I had to open a Yahoo acct just to get the acct verification email.

It would be nice if FC.com would get an email domain name alias (easy to do) that doesn't have 'fuck' in it, but apparently the site's owner has pretty much be MIA for quite a while and the Mods don't have the authority to take this type of action.

Shame really as I think this inhibits the site's growth.

Try gmail filters.....
perhaps the confirmations are going to spam....
I went to gmail filters and typed in FC.com's email and set all email from FC to skip the spam box, and go to a label I made called "forum".
Here is the setup:
Matches: from noreply@fuckcombustion.com)
Do this: Skip Inbox, Apply label "Forums", Never send it to Spam

I now get everything from FC!

After messing w/ it already I didn't think that^^ filter would do any good, but still I figured I'd give it a try.. I did exactly what you said, and nothing  Maybe it working for you has to do with you having a Gmail account attached to your FC account from before it was an issue w/ FC  or maybe like Baron said, it's just your ISP that's allowing it  although it seems to me like it's more of a gmail issue than ISP, but I'm totally not sure at all.. I really have no idea why it works for you, but it doesn't for me..
I never used gmail for my FC account before, but trying to switch yesterday, and again today for good measure (for the reason I mentioned in my post above), even with the filter setup like described, I still wasn't able to even receive a confirmation email.. no mail in spam, no mail is even making it to the inbox.. I tried a lot of times, and even went a bit beyond what your filter is setup like as far as filling in more details.. So I just switched back to my old non-gmail email address, again, and I'm funneling it though my gmail to keep things simpler for me, rather than having to go between 2 different emails regularly I can keep them both in one place.. the best I can do for my specific situation at this time AFIK..

Sorry, you are right and Google is not an ISP for most, but I tend to use ISP and email provider interchangeably. That was pretty much the way it was for a long time, but no longer. Sorry for the confusion but yes, I believe that Google doesn't even allow the email to hit my account so filters don't seem to do anything for me.

Site admin knows what's going on with Gmail so I don't know why they don't state that on the registration page.
It is indeed stated on the registration page:

I've caught the cut of your jib... you're thinking back to dial up days when your ISP was also your e-mail provider and you pointed your POP3 and SMTP servers towards your ISP's servers. I think you're correct that gmail's blocking all emails from the domain and so you'll never get a chance to apply account-specific "filters" to get the emails delivered. @Vitolo I appreciate the tip but am curious if you're still actually still receiving FC Mailer e-mails - when was the last time you got an email from FC in your Gmail inbox?

Thanks Stu- If I'd been trying to create a new account, I would likely have noticed that flag... However, when trying to change my email from a now-defunct address over to my existing gmail account, though, I wasn't made aware of such an issue.. until I read the many answers to this post. Thanks to you & all who helped.

It has been 2 weeks since my last email notification.
I just went to 'settings' at http://fuckcombustion.com/account/preferences and I found that the second button was unchecked ("recieve email notifications").
I just re-checked it... and will come back here with results in a short time.

You could use an email forwarding service like https://www.33mail.com/. You essentially end up with a middle man that forwards emails on from a different domain.

It's a bit of a workaround but it's simple to setup and should get you round the issue.

OK... done.
I checked and had Patty help me.
I am NOT receiving email notifications, and have not been for just over 2 weeks.
Patty has subscribed to threads, and also has email notification checked....
and she is getting no notices either... she is with MSN mail (Outlook), so apparently they too are having issue with accepting emails from FC's domain.

EDIT:
Patty does get notifications to her email address... I guess MSN is just slower.
Looks like it is just gmail.
I like using gmail, so I won't make any changes.... besides I am here all day every day, so I suppose I do not need email notification.
Fact is I check FC daily before I even open my email account!

Dial up days...no, not really. Most ISPs, and I include Comcast, Charter, whoever that provides the pipe also provides email services with domain specific names. Verizon FIOS is definitely an ISP in the sense that they provide me connectivity to the internet and until recently they also provided email service (although they have recently cut this out).

I still like POP3 as a protocol as I want my email on my personal laptop and not floating out there "in the cloud" which is nothing more that my mail sitting on some server in some mail services data center....a much more attractive hacking target than my lap top.

Neither really here nor there. Comcast also wouldn't let the verification email come through and then one time did (and so I got a valid acct) but never forwarded any more FC.com mail to me after being that they just block the domain name.

Such is life.

Hey folks, I'm awfully sorry for the email issues you've been experiencing. There are few things more frustrating in an average day online than waiting on a confirmation email that never comes. :argh:

As some of you have noticed we're well on our way back into Gmail's good graces. All mail should now be getting delivered to Gmail and other providers, however it might still end up in your spam folder. @Vitolo's filter suggestion in post #4 should prevent that from happening for you in the future, as should opening the message and clicking the "Not spam" button. In time the problem should diminish.

It is a relatively complex issue, but believe it or not the fc domain has a reputation of "high". For better or worse we're stuck with the fuck.

P.S. :bowdown:Gmail.

Hmmm. I had stopped getting notifications a long time ago (well before Feb. 2017). I'm pretty sure it was because I no longer wanted my gmail filled with notifications of posts to fc and I turned something off. When this recent gmail issue was corrected, did the correction involve overriding members preferences? I just checked and turned off the 'receive email notifications of replies' box. Not that I don't love y'all.

did the correction involve overriding members preferences?
Definitely not.

There has been some misunderstanding about the notification/email preferences in the past and admittedly they are sort of confusing. Members can manage their watched threads and email notification settings using the instructions in this link.

On a similar topic:

I also noticed that the Hello thread was auto-added to my list of Watched Threads.
This behavior is due to having the "Automatically watch threads that you create or when you reply..." option enabled and can be disabled using the instructions in the above link.

I hope that helps! :)
