Thanks dude, another quick question guys how do you keep the heating element screen clean, say if some tiny crumbs get stuck in the holes? Thanks again!

Mine came with a needle inserted into the tip of a stick , similar to a Bamboo skewer stick. So a needle or anything pointy I would assume, gently try to poke stuff out of it . Might be other better methods from other folks who've used one longer then me.. ?

Tip for the roasting tube (stem) screen , I use a steel brush that came with another vape, I brush it off, comes nice and clean to almost new , no need to soak it in iso or burn your fingertips with open flame.. any sterdy brush could possibly work , steel bristle works good though..

Yeah I was going to try doing that but I thought that it could maybe cause the pieces to fall inside the core on the other side and combust. Or just clog up the inside part below the coil. Is there a way to remove the top heating element/coil part to clean more thoroughly?

Hey, I tried to edit the above post but couldn't, just wanted to add another question for whenever anyone has the time. Will lowering the VVPS voltage lower the temperature that the HI produces? Just to clarify, that is the whole point of a VVPS, to adjust the temperature of the vaporizer as well as the voltage/power being used? From what I've heard 365 F is around the ideal temperature, so is there a way to bring the VVPS down to that temperature range? If the HI and other log vapes are built to run at higher temperatures, isn't there a much higher risk for combustion also? Took a few good rips and burnt my tongue a bit so thought I could be pulling too hard, or that the voltage was too high. Thanks again for the help guys & sorry for the multiple newcomer questions

Will lowering the VVPS voltage lower the temperature that the HI produces?

Yes. The temperature your HI produces will change with the Voltage. More Volts = More Power = Hotter. Therefore lower volts will also give a cooler extraction.

I do not believe there is an easy way to figure out the exact F temperature your vape is producing.. I think even if you had some kind of temp gun that wouldn't necessarily give you an accurate answer because you'd actually want to know the temperature of the air as it passes over your herb; not so much the heater coil itself. With some practise you should be able to guesstimate the ~F of your extraction by examining the colour of your ABV though! If your herb is dark brown or almost burnt looking after your first hits you're probably vaping well above 365F. If it comes out golden brown and with repeated hits does not darken much, this means you're dialed in at a nice low roast.

The definition of "ideal" temperature kind of depends on what you're going for too IMO. People who seek flavour or specific chemical extractions might be more concerned about low/accurate heats than a person who wants large clouds or single hitters. When I use my portable vapes I always turn them up around 400-410 f just to cook the bowl in one session, used my EQ the same way.. I'd say the ideal temp is whatever works best for you and, in this case, that's probably just gonna require some trial and error to dial in on. At least the testing is fun

Great reply, thanks man. So the hotter the temperature the more visible the vapor will be as well? Even if at a lower temperature and no vapor is visible that's also fine and vapor doesn't always have to be visible? The taste is wonderful dry even at 12V though. I've learned a lot these past few days, great to know this type of stuff. Appreciate the help!

Typically yes, keeping everything else the same hotter temps will produce more/thicker vapour. And yes sometimes there might not be much visible vapour, especially depending on your lighting conditions.. Sometimes I've thought I hardly get anything only to exhale near my lamp and see a large cloud. And that's totally ok in my books! I'd focus more on how the extraction feels and how your herb looks after heating than how visible the clouds are. Some of the best hit's I've ever had were tasty low temp hits that you could barely see but still sent me flying! But obviously if the herb is coming out green or looking barely browned then you still have some goodies in there waiting for some heat.

With practise you'll find there are some things other than heat that can affect your extraction as well. Keeping the heat the same but adjusting how fast/slow you draw air, how you grind your herb, how much you load into and how tight you pack the chamber, even how dry your herb is.. all can have a large affect on how much vapour you produce. And obviously the quality of your product will have a noticeable effect as well! Just try to keep everything you do the same and adjust one thing at a time until you find a method that's working right for you. Without seeing your results it's hard to say but I suspect 12V is an excellent place to start experimenting and should provide all the heat you need if you can get the right technique down.

A relevant anecdote.. My best friend and I both have a vape called the SSV; identical glass setups, same grinders, get herb from the same guy.. His draw speed is so different from mine that if he hits my SSV on my preferred heat setting the way he's used to using his own... he will burn herb very consistently. Same vape, we both love it, but we have very different settings to get our preferred results.

My point is just to say don't be discouraged if you feel you're not doing something the "right" way; the best way to use your HI IMO is the one that gets you HIghest! Good luck with your extractions @FUCKCOMBUSTION88!

I've been using an "Oversized NonG" (from UD) with my Toasty Island lately. It is thick stainless steel that fits over the heater port instead of inside it. Anyway, it fits like glass and hits like SS. I pull it out when I wanna get wrecked quick or want a giant bowl of avb. They are not a regular item, and the one I have has an 18mm nylon taper, even though I would prefer 14mm. Just thought I would pass it on, since I've loved the pairing so much.

Just a positive update for you Heat Islanders! I'm very glad that I made this purchase. Attached to a water pipe I've found that this works amazing. Dry hits are very tasty, a nice wooden/herbal taste. (I'm sure everyone knows this information, but just wanted to provide my own experience/feedback as I'm fairly new to vaporizing) I've never actually had a true taste of the herb experience until I got the HI... I thought that joints tasted good. The first vapor bong was an experience that I won't forget. I also haven't combusted since I've got the HI, and I honestly don't think that I ever will, unless it's at a social event and someone pulls out a joint and there's no access to a vaporizer, but very rare occasions and I'm glad that I now don't smoke. The effects are much cleaner as I was developing some negative health effects before during the combustion days. When I first tried a vaporizer awhile back, before I got the HI, I thought that the effects were too mild and mental, without the body effects, as I was used to combustion. Since I've got the HI, my opinion on vaporizers did a 360 and I'm now used to the effects and feel much healthier. Thanks again @btka and @Alan, both of these individuals have been very helpful. Thanks to everyone else who took the time to answer all of the above questions that I had as well. Glad to be a part of a community like this

@FUCKCOMBUSTION88 - Glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. I am also so happy about discovering vaporizers. It is a much cleaner way to medicate. The flavor can really be enjoyed.
I have been using a wooden tube quite a bit lately. The hole is large enough that I can use the blade of a small swiss army knife to scrape out condensed material. Removing all of the oil from the wood is not possible, so I prefer to just manage the amount condensed. Smaller diameter tubes will need a thinner blade. I have found that some car windshield wiper blades have thin stainless steel inserts that make great tools for harvesting material out of long thin tubes. It helps to heat up the tube first to soften the condensed material. Having good air flow in the tube is very important to avoid combustion. A clean screen will also help avoid combustion.

Hey have any of you guys thought of a way to clean the inner part of the wooden roasting tube?
I use rum.
NOT overproof rum, but regular gold bacardi.
I unwrap a 100% cotton ball, and wind myself up a q-tip in a long wooden skewer.
I do not wet it, I dampen, and squeeze it out, then I rub the inside walls up and down
until there is no resistance.
I follow this with a dry one, trying my best to enter all the way, and stroke the walls dry, in a direction toward the mouthpiece. You can twist up a piece of paper towel yo do this, or use q-tips that are longer if you have some. (the kind on wood for stereo maintenance)
I then hold the tube mouth side cupped with my hand near the lip of the Vacuum cleaner wand, and that dries it up. it cures well, and helps my wooden tubes last!
(with wooden stems, I remove all solid matter and debris, and clean the tip first.)

Plus one on this technique but I use Jack Daniels honey whiskey.

and arrived with a host of wonderful little goodies to keep this HI looking and operating in perfect condition for at least 2000 years.

I want to say thanks to @Alan for making this cracking HI. I emailed him less than a month ago, and through a twist of fate or what have you, I am already sitting with a gorgeous HI, it is a spalted silver maple with a highly figured walnut bottom cap, and resting on it, is a highly figured walnut WonG tube.

There is also a great 18mm GonG that I've been using for most of the day.

The thing hits very hard with no "warm up-draw" needed, I am so used to having one good draw to warm the ELB in my EVO before you get thick vapour, but that is not the case with the HI; and it keeps taking me by surprise!

It is also very cool being able to leave it on, it has been on all day so far, and the temperature/vapour production seems to have remained constant throughout. *as has the flavour, which IMO is similar to 1 or 2 'o clock on the dial of the EVO.

I am going to get a variable power supply, as I've got 2 power packs, one is 12v 1a, the other 12v 3a, (they should both run the same temperature??) and they give drastically different temperatures, one making the HI uncomfortably hot and making combustion easy and the other one, it turns the AVB a medium brown, but I'd like to be able to dial in the exact voltage.

Can anyone recommend a VVPS for UK users, or explain how on earth those LCD/circuit board regulator things work.. mainly just how they connect cable wise to anything else?

So, thanks Alan, for everything, the product, the customer service, the idea, the lovely beeswax beads that you supplied, the hemp fibre, the extra screens, the help using the GonG... the list goes on!

AWESOME...

Stay HI!/Get HI!

The answer to my question may be in these pages somewhere but there are so many; I'm actually surprised how many more here than the TT thread.
Anyway, has anyone found some premade screens that fit the HI stems. I have some screens that go on the end of a 14mm stem but that won't work with the double screen method. I've been unsuccessful in shaping screens and just end up not using a vape that needs them. And my HI is pretty great. It's not shaped like my other logs but is very petite.

What a gorgeous HI @3rdtimetrying :luv: ........ and you were super lucky getting your hands on one that quickly! I was on 'The List' 18 months before Alan got in touch.... but the wait was so, so worth it - the HIs and accessories Alan crafted for me are ridiculously beautiful....

The HIs are breathtakingly beautiful, and are made from: light spotted bamboo Hi-brid (glass core), sumac and walnut mini-HI (SS core), buckeye HI (SS core), dark spotted bamboo Hi-brid (glass core)

The ebony micro controller is surprisingly very pretty, and oh so smooth to the touch - I love it!

And the stems and WonGs are quite simply stunning too.

Thank you so much @Alan for crafting these classy additions to my collection....

.... and thank you @Snappo for helping me find such a beautiful piece of buckeye and the gorgeous stem woods: Bethlehem olive, golden white teak burl, Himalayan white spruce burl, and big leaf maple burl

......and diolch yn fawr to EDA - I absolutely love the buckeye WonG and stem

I'm enjoying not only the looks, but also the functionality of the HIs. Once I've had them a little while longer - I'll write more of a review..... until then, Happy Vaping fellow HI-lovers

That photo doesn't really do the buckeye HI justice - this one picks up more of the grain:

That buckeye is beautiful. I can only use 1 log at a time so I'm trying not to get too many more or I would definitely go back on the list for one of those. Maybe I can order a buckeye stem.
I forgot that Alan has screens and so I've ordered some more basket screens from him so I can make "sandwiches".
