That looks awesome! Mind posting a pic with the herc? And how come the white over the 3.7?
Never tested the 3.7v... the white rod can get increase resistance if you are doing a lot of back to back hits, habitually I take 3-5 puffs until the next use. Battery life is awesome, I need to charge them every 2-3 weeks!

got some issues to charge pics...will try again later.

Did you have to shave down the open of your disguised or did it fit perfectly?

I just upgraded from some tired old AW's to the new 3000mAh Sony VTC6. Holy hell the battery life is amazing.

:D how about box mods? preferably side loading. I was looking at getting the tesla stealth mini for the herc.

Heck yeah. I have LG HG2's and they last forever with the AC V2. Not so long with the Herc on 30w but still all day no problem. Can't wait to see how the VTC6's last in dual mode and 3.7v on the Persei.
Or maybe light saber mode with the 8 and sr-71.

Thanks Sam!

My Persei is no more. In order to keep firing my stable of Hercules carts I got my first box mod, a Smok Alien 220. I've only been using this mod for about a week now but so far I'm really loving it. It's everything that I wanted in a regulated portable power source. I set it in watt mode for the ceramic heater in the Herc. At first I set it for 35W in "normal" strength but then I discovered the "hard" strength setting which boosts the power initially before decreasing to the set wattage. This behavior mimics the much loved ceramic heaters native positive temperature coefficient where the power level falls as the heater heats up due to increasing resistance. So now I run it at 30W with the strength set to "hard". This provides an initial power of 35W decreasing to 30W as you take a hit. Perfect! I can get a hit super quick (~3 seconds to vapor) with less risk of overheating.

Since the connector is 510 I bought 510 bottom adapters for my existing SR-71s. I also got a Hercules 510 SR74z at the same time. It's interesting to compare the SR-71 to the SR-74z. My 2 remaining SR-71s have 1.6 ohm heating rods while the SR-74z is 0.8 ohms. The regulated mod detects which one is attached and adjusts automatically so that I get my set power level with either type Herc. On this regulated supply I find the performance of each Herc type to be identical. I worry about the longevity of the spring loaded center pin of the 74z so I'll order a few spares.

Finallly, I really like the comprehensive display information and all the settings to play with. I also like having the option of using wire heater attys in temp control mode. The unit seems quite solid and designed with plenty of margin that I hope will translate to a long life. Maybe I'm just excited because this is my first box mod but if W9 ever comes out with its own mod these are exactly the kind of features I'm looking for.

Edit: I'm using the Alien mod with 2 LG HG2s. Wonderful batteries so far. After a day of vaping with the Herc I'm at 82% power left.

The power mode sounds interesting, does it help with the cool down hits? I would definitely prefer a mod made by w9 if its at a affordable cost.

Which do you prefer the old sr-71 or 74z?

I'm still searching for a side loading mod that fits with the herc. Trying conceal most of the body kind like the w9 design we've seen.

I'd definitely be interested in a side load mod that fits the Herc well. Here is a picture of my Alien mod with the SR-74z.

Note in the picture that if you multiple the volts and amps in the display you get 35 watts rather than the 30 that its set for. This is the initial boost used to get the vapor going as quickly as possible.

Since this was under $60 it will serve me well for the time being. It is very well made, solid and a bit heavy.

I have no preference between the 71 amd 74z. Both perform identically on the mod. While the 71 has a press fit center pin connection I've learned to take the chambers apart while it is hot to minimize wear on the heating rod contacts, and I rarely take the chambers apart. If the spring loaded contact proves troublesome in the future I would prefer the press fit but with a few spare 74z center pins I'm hoping that there won't be an issue.

As far as cool down hits, since the "hard" strength setting tapers the power down during the hit less energy is pumped into the Herc which means a bit less heat to cool down. I take a couple of cool down puffs when I'm done and I haven't had any leakage issues. The concentrate I've been vaping is 90%+ THC and is very hard to melt and solidifies very quickly as it cools, plus it is so strong that I usually only take 1-3 hits at a time so the Herc doesn't get super hot.

Is that mod not 510 threaded?

It's 510 threaded. The SR-74z on it has 510 threads on both the "threaded assembly" piece and the bottom adapter so I usually forgo the bottom adapter and heat shield while I'm at home. This is what I call full commando mode. No AAF washer, no mouthpiece screen, no bottom adapter and no heat shield.

The SR-71s need the 510 bottom adapter to fit on the mod of course so I leave the bottom adapter and heat shield on for those Hercs. If I'm going out of the house or want to use my Nibbler I just grab an SR-71 rather than the 74z.

I was thinking some more about switching Hercs while keeping the same power settings on a regulated mod.

I switch between Hercs with 0.8 ohms and 1.6 ohms resistance while keeping the mod set to 35 watts (for example). This works because the mod can adjust the voltage (and correspondingly the current) to hold the given power setting. The 1.6 ohm heater limits the range of power that the mod can supply because the mod can only supply up to 8V of output voltage max. So 1.6 ohms at 8V is (by definition) 40 watts at 5A current.

When I switch to a 0.8 ohm Herc it has no problem running at 40 watts which for it represents 5.66V at 7.07 amps. Well within the range of the mod. With the 0.8 ohm Herc the mod could supply up to 80W of power before hitting the 8V output limit (at 10 amps of current).

So as long as I set the mod to 40W or less I can switch freely between my Hercs and get the same performance out of each.

The highest resistance Herc you have will set the limit of power the mod can supply. For newer "7.4v" Hercs the heating rod resistance was 2.3 to 2.1 ohms which limits the mod to supplying about 28 to 30 watts.
Older "7.4v" heaters had resistances of 1.6 to 1.5 ohms which limits the power to 40 to 43 watts (better IMHO). A "3.7v" heater has always been about 0.8 ohms. The mod can drive it up to 80W.

So to have the greatest adjustment range you could just put 0.8 ohm heaters in all Hercs. There are two possible issues with that though. Any mod setting above 20w will cause the cause the current to be above 5 amps reaching 10 amps at 80 watts. So make sure that you use high drain batteries that are capable of supplying the current. Also, make sure your electrical contacts are all squeaky clean since losses are amplified at higher currents. The mod makes this easy to check with its ohms display. If its reading higher than it should be look for dirty/loose contacts.

Fun stuff... for a EE at least!

Does the mod get hot running the herc without the teflon threads and sleeve? I'd much rather keep it naked like this.. With a stainless mp it would look sexy!

I bet a stainless mouthpiece would get hotter than hell. A PTFE "drip tip" type of thing might be nice.

Doesn't seem to be any significant heat transfer to the mod the way I use it. The Alien mod is surprisingly heavy and has a lot of metal considering it's only a little bigger than the pair of 18650s inside of it. And even with the bottom adapter on the Herc there would still be solid metal path for heat with the ground and center pin contacts. Now if it is being used by a group maybe it could become a problem. I have primarily used my Hercs in full commando mode on the Persei for the past couple of years also without issue. The Herc body will get hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch for a minute or so.

I would love to just find a (decorative) nut to screw onto the mouthpiece threads. Those bare threads just ruin the look of this setup. Does any one know the size of the mouthpiece threads? A custom mouthpiece would be awesome also.

I also want to mention that when the Herc is cold there is enough resin buildup on the top cap and mouthpiece that I can lift the Herc/mod by the mouthpiece without it coming apart. When it's hot the top cap does slip off easily so one needs to be careful but it also makes reloading a breeze.

I would love to see W9 come out with a mod just like this but with a real temperature control mode for the characteristics of the Hercs ceramic heaters. Side loading would be nice especially if you could just screw the naked Hercules into the side socket so that the heat shielding would be part of the mod itself.

We’ve been waiting patiently for a ‘side loading’ Persei with proper TC for the Hercules. Hopefully @THC SCIENTIFIC will update us soon on it’s progress.

A little Uptech porn. Naked Herc on the 8 with an old style silicone top and shorty core insert.

Interesting. The silicone tip mouthpiece holds the top cap on even when the Herc is hot.

I hear ya. I've been waiting for a couple of years for Uptech to have a regulated portable power source ever since my Iris died.

My thoughts exactly! The whole thing would be a palmable powerhouse.

Actually no top piece on there. It would be a bear to get out of the silicone tip. I don't use the Herc like that. The girls just wanted to do some modeling for that pic. My daily sr-71 lives in the Nibbler XL.
