VVPS changes the voltage, which changes the temperature. You don't get to see what the exact temp is, but imo. You don't need to know exactly what temp it is. With voltage control, you'll find what voltage works for you, which is effectively the same. Your preferred voltage/temp will vary depending on a number of factors including what kind of effects you're looking for and the strain/moisture level of your material.

It takes some experimentation, you start at 12v and see if you need to raise or lower the temp to get what you want.

As for plugging it in 24/7, really up to you and I personally think the difference is minor. Some say it's better for the wood to be always plugged in because it doesn't expand and contract, others say it's better for the heater to be off as much as possible for lifespan. I don't know who's right and don't really care because whether you leave it plugged in constantly or are diligent about turning it off, this thing is going to last a very very long time and will be inexpensive to repair if it does ever fail.

I've been experiencing with my HI for not even 2 weeks, loved it day 1 and loving it more everyday . You'll experiment yes but it will work every time. Does for most, You won't be wasting only enjoying !

The vvps : I'm sure Alan who builds the HI sets the HI itself to perform at ideal temp at 12v. (For people using it with power adapter only) . Turning the vvps Down to 11.5 or lower will give you tastier hits, over 12 faster hits. Keep in mind to turn it down at/under 12 when done.

I used to drop the vvps voltage down abit before bed but im finding it pointless now and leave it at whatever i used it at last under 12. You could turn it down 9v if wanting to keep it warm and save abit of energy ..

As said , fairly new to vaping too so welcome and good choice !

Thanks for the post. Maybe I'm misinterpreting something about Alan's latest post (#5917) - he mentions something about people on the waiting list having the RBT heater as an option. I took that to mean the HSA heater is an option? Like I said, maybe I'm mistaken.

I probably have at least some of this wrong as I can't afford to risk vas from following it closely :spliff:

Yup, and apparently it will be portable friendly . Hence be able to carry a battery pack or something and take it for hikes .
Get home and plug it in. I think the Milaana is quick heat from push of a button but I don't know how it performs with small doses of flowers , if quick , powerful hit follows suit with heater or ?

I plan to install some HSA heaters from RBT into HI bodies after I get the power cord/plug connections finalized. The roasting tubes are 18mm which hold more material and have better air flow. The roasting tube is not hot enough to cause a burn when removed from the vaporizer, which is nice. The wood is not being constantly heated so almost any type is possible. Hot air is produced only when needed which saves money. A larger size 12 volt power supply is needed to feed the voltage controller. Need to investigate if it is possible to feed the unit from a battery pack which would then make it portable. A Milaana or Zion pretty much already have the HSA heater tech covered for portables.

@FUCKCOMBUSTION88 - Congratulations on getting a HI. The digital display of the voltage controller is nice so you can find you favorite voltage which corresponds to a certain temperature. Good to always know the temperature/voltage at which you are roasting. Keeps you from applying too much voltage.
The core of the HI used to be held in place by friction fit into the wood. Keeping it constantly plugged in meant the wood was as dry as it was ever going and the core would never get loose. Sometimes the wood did shrink a bit more which caused it to crack since the metal core wouldn't let it get any smaller.
The heater cover is now held in place with ss screws and there is no rigid metal sleeve to prevent the wood from shrinking. The design prevent charring from ever occurring since the heater cover cannot conduct enough heat to the wood. The wood is free to shrink and swell with humidity changes now so it doesn't need to be plugged in all the time. The life of the heating element is related to how long it has been energized. I have had some running 24/7 for a very long time. Expect they will keep going for a long time.

I had seen "the amazing vapor lung " video on the Toasty Top youtube channel while waiting on my Bamboo HI. it reminded me of what we called a "(para)chute" back in high school lol. Exact same concept but with a pierced foil as a lid to the bottomless soda bottle with plastic bag taped to it. ..

needless to say, I had to try a vape'chute !

Here's what it produced. Was only my 2nd attempt testing the vape'chute, i got a few more small clouds out of the tube after video too ! roasted at 12v. It hits HI!!! :o

I'd definitely like to acquire one of those vape-chutes/vapor lungs. It seems kind of similar to bags that desktops have minus the one hit aspect. Can you make them yourself or would it be easier to purchase a professionally made one?

Nice! Get crafty my friend! It should be easy to make it yourself.

-2L bottle of soda pop : cut the bottom part of the bottle off.
-A plastic bag (anything you can find ): a friend got me mine, new/folded in a square from a deli/produce market but a grocery bag would do fine by cutting off the handles and taping to bottle. as long as there are no holes in your bag you should be good :).
-clear tape or any other tape. To tape the bag on the outside of the bottle. ( I also taped the end of the bag part I hold and pull on about 4 inches long which gives it a parachute like appearances when combustion with a foil bowl I guess lol )
- bottle cap/lid - I found a drill bit that was the right size of my roasting tube . I drilled the cap thru and carefully placed my tube in being a tight enough fit. Its a hard enough plastic, if no drill bit you can probably cut a hole with a knife or maybe burn a hole thru and then try to size as tight as possible to create a good seal.. careful if with a knife loll

I see we are both in Canada , if you can't figure things out I can probably ship something your way , even if just the cap with a hole in it if we have same size roasting tube. It shouldn't be too expensive to ship. Or I can take a pic of it too if helpful in your build.

So I have a somewhat urgent question regarding operating a VVPS/HI. I've never used one of these before but was just about to. I just acquired my HI today. Shout out to @btka by the way. Anyway I can't seem to find the on/off switch for the VVPS although the digital display is on. I've attached a picture. Is anyone familiar with this type of VVPS? I've literally spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, pushing buttons and trying to twist certain parts of it but I don't want to break anything. Anyone know how to turn this on/off? And how to turn off the HI itself if not being used with the VVPS for example? I've tried twisting the little lightly colored wooden knob on the top of the VVPS, which I believe adjusts temperature but the temperature isn't changing on the digital display? I'm not even sure if it's on, although the numbers are showing and lit up but it's not producing heat. Could be due to just being plugged in? Also it's safe to leave the VVPS "on" 24/7 as well? Thanks guys.

Here are the instructions that I received with the circuit boards.

Input voltage mode: Boot default display the Input voltage mode, show **.*, the LED indicator light on and output state shut down


Output voltage mode: Press S1, the module switch to output voltage mode. show **.**, the LED indicator light off. If the output state shut down, it show “OFF".


Alternating mode: Press button again input/output voltage alternately display (3s). Press button again, switch to input voltage display.


Memory mode: keeping press S1 more than 2s, the current mode is memorizing for default boot state.


[0] represents the default boot show input voltage

[1] represents the default boot show output voltage

[2] represents the default boot show alternately input or output voltage

The button on the left is S1. The button on the right turns it off and on.
The output voltage can be adjusted in the output voltage mode [1].
The memory feature is nice for a favorite startup voltage.

I have had mine plugged in 24/7 since I first started making them. Still working great.

Thank you @Alan, although I'll be honest I don't understand much the scientific aspects of it. Interesting that it has different modes. Hopefully I can figure out how to learn/switch between them all. I found the two little black buttons, S1 and the on/off switch. When I hit S1, on the left, it shows OFF. When I continue to hit S1 it shows --1, --2, --0, etc? I'm not sure what this means. When rotating the wooden knob on the top of the unit should the voltage change on the display? It's staying at 12... When I hit the right button (on/off?) it switches to 11.7, 11.9, etc then right back to 12 when I hit it again. Sorry for the confusion here. The HI is still not producing heat though, when connected to the VVPS. I'll try it without for now

Let's try this..
Press right button till it says OFF. When seeing OFF . Press it 1 more time . It will be ON (although not indicating it) .

S1 button .
0 and ##.# that follows is the voltage that comes from the adaptor / wall plug.

1 and ##.# that follows is the voltage that is fed to your HI.

2 and ##.# that follows is memory. I have yet to figure out how to set memory and switch from 1 to 2. Seems it doesn't stay and I have to turn it up/down again when going back to 1..

But anyways you want to be on (1) to know what voltage is going to your HI.

Try putting it on and letting it warm up 10-20 minutes maybe ? I dont have a wood Log so not sure on warmup time..

Otherwise, congrats , think I had eyed that beatiful piece of craft/art you purchased from btka. Black Walnut and cocobolo base ? I'm jealous. Wishfully this helps or you have or will figure it out soon. Enjoy , let us know how things work out , for the vape'chute too :p

Appreciate it @P.A.M. Walnut with cocobolo base is correct. Funny I was eating some walnuts a few days ago, it's interesting how different parts of plants and trees can have many uses. I've seen a few of the videos of yours that I was watching before I got the HI, what type of log do you have or what else can they be made of? I just tried it out earlier without the VVPS at 12V, was honestly blown away and still am. Took a few hits dry, connected it to a water pipe, took a few hits back to back, everything worked out great. I'm looking at the VVPS now, just got it all figured it out. While I was trying to understand it there for a bit it was flashing at 17.2-12.0 while the vaporizer was plugged in. I didn't realize it at the time or know how to change it or what setting it was at but could the high temperature (17.2) cause damage to the heating element/core or is there a max voltage limit to be aware of as a precautionary measure? When I push the left button to --2 it flashes from 11.4-11.7 but can also be adjusted with the little pale colored knob at the top. I noticed that the numbers only flash/blink and change when on setting --2. Also if I hold the left button and turn the tiny knob at the top it shows [ 0 ]. Last question for now but is the VVPS itself supposed to get warm or just the HI itself? Thanks!

I believe the reason the display flashes between numbers on setting 2 is that it's showing you first the input voltage, then the output voltage. The power the VVPS is getting, then the power out to your HI.

It seems that holding the left button should memorize the "mode" so that leads me to believe it stores the display type.. perhaps when you hold the left button it's showing 0 to indicate that the VVPS will turn on into display mode 0 = show input voltage

I am not sure about the exact specs of the HI but I own a very similar log vaporizer called the UnderDog. It is advertised as a 12v vaporizer but, depending on your heat core construction, it can be run at a higher voltage if needed. However it is NOT safe to run the UD over 15v for prolonged periods of time without risking damage to the heat core! I'd stick to the suggested 12v for now just to be safe if it were my vape..

I use my UD at lower volts 10.5 - 11 and rely on my airflow to cook the bowl more thoroughly. Obviously there are a lot of variables to consider when recommending a voltage to someone; your draw/glass/grind consistency/pack/vape in this case, will not match mine exactly so you might find a different "sweet spot".. BUT my point is it's entirely possible to get good results with logs at lower voltages.

HeY @FUCKCOMBUSTION88 , glad you got to try it out directly from adapter and got blown away . As @Prolusio mentioned , I believe it's best to keep the HI under 15v. Not sure of exact "number" but I read Alan suggest that it is ok to raise it to 13 -14v temporarily as long as it is brought back down to 12v or under after your session.

Also , @Prolusio is right , the 2 different flashing numbers would be input / output.
If first number is 17.2 , is it possible your power adapter is rated over 12v ? Please try to find the Voltage rating on your adaptor.

It is ok to use adaptor(if 12v+) with the vvps as the vvps lowers the output to desired voltage needed for HI.
The Vvps can accept 5v to 25v adaptor. That number is less important then the Output .

Please note: if your power adapter rates a 17.2v, it might be too high to use plugged-in directly to log, for long period of time. It would be OK if plugged into vvps as you control the voltage that goes out to Log.

Wish this makes sense...

You can leave the VVPS plugged in 24-7, it does get warm/hot. I've had my HI and VVPS On 24/7 since receiving it early January.

To answer your question , my HI is made of Bamboo , by Alan , who made yours too . You probably have a stainless steel heater core (I have glass core ). The stainless core is said to run abit hotter then the glass core, so your in business to roast your flower as light or dark as you want. I get quite dark with my glass core and it sucks out all the goodies were after, quite efficiently. I want to thank @Alan for that, he must have went through a lot of flower or material to dial these things so perfectly. I do believe Alan made a HI with aluminum or steel mesh instead of wood. (Metal Sheet with holes in it ) . He probably as other cool idea that could work for a Log..

Thanks for watching the videos, hopefully they were helpful in getting familiarized with the HI fonctions. It quite versatile as in , you can take short or long drags, use dry or not , use lower temp for increased taste or higher temp for less dry flower , etc. Let us know how your training goes, it's interesting to hear other people's experiences or discoveries.

EDIT: they are built to run at 12v , I keep my temp/voltage around there most the time for that reason .I find it extracts pretty good at 12v. Another versatility is pack-a-bowl any size you want . Example. I load very little and vape it between 11.8 and 12v. Once having gathered abit of abv (usually by night time lol) I pack 2 to 3 times my usual load with the abv. Being more material, i can squeeze out a puff or two at same temp/voltage or crank up at 12.5v and do same. Its usually just a few puffs being well extracted prior but I feel I get a good glow and more of my flower this way. I then eat it on peanut butter toast or in a yogurt lol.. you can do low/high in same session, all low, all high, really up to you. Log vapes rule, Let's get HI

The voltage controller will be slightly warm to the touch when operating.

Push the left button until a "1" is displayed. If it displays "off", push the right button to turn it back on.
Adjust the knob until you get to your desired voltage. Then push and hold the left button for more than 2 seconds to memorize the setting. When ever you plug it back in, that setting should be remembered. The knob will only affect the display when in the output mode "1".
I wouldn't recommend plugging it straight into the 17.2 volt power supply. That could damage the heater in the HI.

Thanks for the help guys. So far everything has been working great now that I understand the basics of the VVPS. The power supply itself is 12V but when I had it connected to the VVPS when trying to figure that out, the VVPS read 17.2, I believe this is when it was flashing (setting --2) Because of the stainless steel core being able to run at higher temperatures in comparison to glass, it would probably be less suspectable to damage if accidentally raised to too high of a temperature for a short period of time as I had it at before (17.2)? I was concerned afterwards when I realized it, because the unit was pretty hot, but I only had it at that temperature for about 20 minutes or so... I'll keep it at 12V and under for future reference to be safe and hopefully no damage occured. I imagine anything over 12V could potentially cause combustion? @P.A.M. Bamboo isn't a log vape? I had the impression that it was being a type of wood. Lol bamboo seems really nice though as well. I kept the VVPS plugged in and on "ON" mode at 8.5V throughout the night. I know they're known to be pretty safe to leave on from reading about it here but I turned it to OFF mode when I left the house today just for safety precautions (I get a bit paranoid about stuff like that and am always used to turning off my Himalayan salt lamp before I leave the house too although they're intended for 24/7 use as well) but if they're intended to be kept ON continuously I'll probably start doing that more often to save from having to wait for the initial heat up. Also, I tried to make firecrackers the other night with some ABV from a friend's old wooden box type of whip vaporizer, it worked alright. Is it also effective just to use ABV on toast with something with a high fat content such as peanut butter like you do? I thought that it requires more time for the THC to be absorbed into the fats but if effective this seems like a really easy way of doing it. @Alan Thank you. I found that when having it set to --2 I can also adjust the display? As well as while on --1. --0 seems to be unadjustable though... I'll probably only try to use the --1 setting as that's the main voltage/temperature setting from what I've read here.‎

@FUCKCOMBUSTION88 , yes my Bamboo HI is log vape and bamboo is wood (well almost fibre I dunno ) but I meant it's heat up time will be different compared to a solid wood HI. You are right about your stainless core being able to withstand more heat...

Cool on firecrackers, I want to try that too eventually, I have been eating it as such being, I don't mind the taste and it's quick and easy to just sprinkle on toast and enjoy. It might take longer to disolve , I dont really care as I never ate much fresh edibles all together and tImes i did get a glow but nothing special.. I eat my abv being I'm cheap/prefer to use it rather then throw it. I do notice I will at times get a buzz like feeling when I haven't recently vaped, perhaps it's the abv eaten hours before that releases/kick in , I'm not sure ..

@NickDlow . Wow , nice collection !! love the jar and Log mantle slab. Very nice!
