was excited about getting my liger today, but pretty dissapointed with what i received...

first off, i ordered a rainbow set, got some blue, some rainbow pieces....

second, i didnt get a carb cap at all, even though i ordered storm cell while my friend who did the same, got a hurricane as replacement due to the problems Josh is having

third, the machining on this 30mm bucket is AWFUL... there is a small metal piece protruding from the hole that wont let me lower the insert all the way down comfortably.... i dont have the tools to smooth it out either.

here is a pic of my bucket:

Oh man, that is sucky news! Do you have a picture of whatever it is that is protruding in the bucket? Is it a burr sticking through from where the intake hole was machined?

Hope this can be taken care of for you quickly my friend!

yep, a little sharp burr

i tried to take a pic of it, but it doesnt come out visible on camera. you can see in the pic above tho that its long enough to stop the insert from going in. i can still get the insert in there if i want to, but i dont feel like risking the sapphire getting scratched.

These burrs are a serious problem not just because of potentially preventing the insert being placed properly but also because they can become loose shreds of titanium in the airpath over time too. I hope this titanium QC thing can be resolved soon! I would definitely be avoiding putting the sapphire in until you can be sure it will not be damaged.

I am sure Josh will make it right bro, just a shame you had to deal with it in the first place when you were all excited to get your new nail!

Not great but if it means anything even if you had gotten a gold bucket it would have turned that colour over a short span of time with use.

here's a great site about anodizing titanium that explains how it works and how to do it:
http://mrtitanium.com/interference.html

"How to produce the oxide layer and get the colors:
  • Heat. Titanium eagerly grabs oxygen from the air, but the oxide layer blocks slow moving oxygen from the surface. So, torch the surface gently to give the atoms the boost they need to charge through the dielectric barrier to bond together and build a thicker layer. It's a bit hard to control, but you can easily get the first-order colors (bronze, blues, maybe yellow). Higher-temperature / longer-time colors are much harder to get and control with heat.
  • Electricity: Another way to speed up those atoms is to put an electric charge on them. In an electrolytic solution (water with a polite chemical like TSP, Borax, or Ammonium Nitrate to give the essentially dielectric liquid an ion carrier), put some metal (stainless, aluminum, titanium) in at one end as the negative electrode for the hydrogen to bubble off of, and connect the positive lead to your titanium piece. The higher the voltage, the harder the oxygen ions slam into the dielectric, so the thicker the dielectric grows before it can block those ions. Conveniently, the barrier potential of useful colors is between about 25 and 130 volts.
To get the higher voltage colors (magenta/pink and greens) the surface must be etched."

..that's interesting stuff....I remember when I got my v2 I asked for a raw titanium...w/ no color,....I got silver.
...the silver is a coating of sorts too...not the dull silver of ti....no big deal at first but when I cleaned it...(it was rose gold)..(.I boil the pieces then use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner..)..I put some PBW in the water w/ the pieces while boiling....they then went thru every color of the rainbow in the pot...over and over for about 5 minutes...then went ugly...like an Easter egg that's been in all the colors and looks like a turd when it comes out.
I used a light wet/dry sandpaper and brought them all to ti...if I had taken them out during any part of that 5 minutes they would have been all colored up...so,..PBW and ligers don't mix....unless that's what you want.

Hey Josh,

I saw some rumbling on FuckCombustion from people who said you got a
bad batch of Storm Cells and will need to wait for a fresh one.

Any input on when I might be able to take the plunge? Exciting to have
a Liger set up and running.

Best,

If it's a metal burr left on after machining (that's what it looks like) send it back to Josh and he will definitely take care of it quickly. If you were near me I would hook you up, I love my Dremel tool lol!

I do think a little much is being made out of the exact anodization colors? If you have ever owned any constantly heated Ti you know it's going to change colors while you use it anyway, and it you ever decide to heat clean yours (torch), or boil it like I do occasionally your color will change yet again. IF you do want to know exactly what your nail is going to look like, order a single color nail. Because i don't think any 2 Rainbows are going to look alike due to to the process, like snowflakes.

On a side note if you don't have a carb cap the Fake Pukinbeagle Thermal P bubble caps from DH gate work great on the 20mm!!!

lol damn so that fake thermal banger did work on one of the ligers after all!

I understand the issue with anodization colors, it is a minor one because obviously as you say the color might change with application of heat anyway (I've never used a blowtorch or high heat to clean my liger but the bucket has definitely gone blue over time just from the heat of normal use. My liger is more silver and purple now, which looks nicer to my eyes than the original blue and gold anyway :)

I can understand why some might be annoyed to receive something of a different color to what they saw in example pics. If there is variation from examples, the key is to be clear to customers that this is the case. It is not unusual to see 'actual finish may vary' or something similar :)

C'mon under the Sea with me and my V3's!

Hey folks:
Been living with the Ligers for about 6 months now. Here are some helpful hints (I hope?) based on some issues I've seen posted:

-I do use pliers to tighten some of the key joints. Folks, this is metal going from room temp to 500-700 degrees. It's gonna get a little wiggly if you don't crank it down a bit. I trade that off for the flexibility of being able to get it at just the right angle on any piece.

-You can leave your Hurricane cap in a dish, ash tray, etc. when it gets too hot to handle. Then it can't roll away. The "skeleton" handle helps a ton. Quick pinch at the very end of the handle/finger saver, flick it gently into the waiting receptacle. Should avoid most hand burns handling this beast of a cap.

-I have come to love both the 20mm and 30mm for different reasons. I have the 30mm set at a higher temp on a bigger piece for larger dabs. The 20mm is my low temp sipper. After stretching my coil and getting the shroud in place, I have been able to lower my temp almost 150 degrees running SiC to 521 on the 20mm, 650-675 on the flat coil- High Five dual nail pid's.

-I Qtip after every dab, but when I get the crusties, I keep a little vial of 97% ISO and distilled water and 2 eye droppers on the table. Set the nail temp to 250 degrees, drop of ISO followed by a drop of distilled water on any problem areas, scrub with a q-tip and it will be spanking fresh and new, no torching needed.

Hey man, as you already know Josh sent you out a new bucket and you can keep that one as a spare. Since it's a spare feel free to grab a little metal file and get the burr off to use it!

Oh my. Those pieces are gorgeous.

My SO got these glass lip balm containers, for storing crumble, when good crumble is around. Anyhow... They work perfect as stands for the Hurricane and Stormcell. I'm sure you can find cheaper ones, she's an impulse buyer. No more hot rolling cap of 'fuck fuck fuck ouch'.

edit: added picture to show how they set. I leave a cap on the Liger over night after I turn it off, keeps dust/critters from mucking about in the dish (lots of silver fish and spiders around here). Have turned the nail on, forgot to take cap off and left it there for an hour + a few times. Set it directly on the glass with no issues.

I prefer the storm Cell or the Hurricane but it does work pretty damn well with the 20mm. And the nail is decent for a torch nail.

This is the one I got.

I think this would work even better

Thanks for the links. I plan on ordering the Liger 3.0 system in a month or so and will be ordering the Storm Cell cap. I just like to have recommended options to play with, especially ones like this that don't cost a lot.

hey, thanks for asking!

waiting for that 2nd bucket + a carb cap to be coming today/tomorrow.

Josh offered for me to send him back the bucket and he'll have it fixed. but i will see if i can take it to a friend first who has tools to get it done with less hassles.

carb cap has been the key missing piece. buying one from DHgate would not have been any faster than Josh shipping me out a proper one, so just stuck waiting. otherwise, i would have already gotten the bucket smoothed out

Guys - interested in buying a Liger 3.0. Are these not in stock and ready to ship? What's the usual leadtime that you all are seeing for like, that and the SiC dish?

Thanks.

you can easily clean the inserts etc with just plain cold water. no need to heat anything, just let it soak a bit and then qtip out the black stuff, done.

I think I'm going to go ahead and order my Liger 3.0 20mm setup this weekend since it takes awhile for shipping. I think I read somewhere on this thread about a discount code for FC members, but can't find it. Is it still valid? Thanks.
