Athlete Vaporists?

Well I'm only 50 so YMMV but I've found a regime of a mix of hot yoga styles is doing great for my muscle mass and core strength while shedding belly fat. I may be stronger than in my weight lifting days. Def more stamina.

187 lbs. 186 is my target. Putting in 24 miles a week. Pace has been steady for over a year. I know that I can increase my pace because there's still gas in the tank during the run but at my age, I've become a wee bit more cautious.
This guy is 72, runs 24 miles a week and is consistent like death and taxes. I'm thinking it's time for some Cannabis start up to sponsor you! Props!

Yes. I have been consistent for 6 years and the dedication required year by year is absolutely pulled from within you. It has become second nature now. I can only imagine how much willpower is required after years of running. 6 years is nothing to this guy. Mind you, I am young. Maybe some would coinsider me a young adult still. Major props and respect to Iwien.

Requires no willpower at all. It's actually habitual and something that I really look forward to every time I go out and run. As you say, it's become second nature.

Gotta set the record straight though. I've stated that I put in 24 miles a week but 12 to 16 miles of that is running and the other 9 to 12 is a fast walk. Run 4 miles every other day and on the days I don't run, I walk 1.5 miles to Trader Joes and 1.5 miles back carrying 2 15lb bags of groceries.

But yeah, running 24 miles a week would be wayyyyyy too much work and at my age, doing something that I don't enjoy doing doesn't make much sense.

@lwien pointed out the two most important factors for me....some folks say "I don't know how you do it. It hurts to run and I don't enjoy it."

Old adage I live by.....2 weeks makes a habit. If you can hang in there, not overdue it and run for comfort, (don't run past your lungs), by the end of the two weeks your body and mind will start to adapt and start looking forward to it.

Aim for enjoyment/positive reinforcement. If I didn't like it I wouldn't be able to do it consistently. Getting high, with my favorite play-list, or new music, driving me to the runner's high....I'm not running through the streets...I'm dancing.

Thanks for the post guys....added a little something to the prep this morning!

I see your point but I am generally giving you props for being active as you have been consistently. And it doesn't require as much willpower as it used to but when I work ten hour days it is hard to get up at 3 am just to run 3-5 miles. Being my job is currently entirely physical. The act of running is enjoyable when you are in shape, though. Waking up at 3 is just apart of my running routine so it is probably different for me.

I'm not a runner, but I know when I'm sore as shit from sparring dudes nearly twice my size the day before, it's helpful to remind myself that even when your motivation falters, dedication will carry you through.

High, everyone!

I've been on the sidelines for a while due to a big health scare. It sucked but I believe I'm out of the woods. Thought I had rheumatoid arthritis but turns out it was likely a rare and severe case of human parvovirus, per my rheumatologist. Fingers crossed that's what it was and it doesn't resurface. Sidelined me for almost 5 months with debilitating joint pain all over. Prednisone was the only thing that helped. But that sucked, too.

Anywho, I'm back running and triathloning with a vengeance. Not overdoing it, but very deliberate in my training. Knocked out a very hilly half marathon last weekend and felt great afterwards. And that's where I'm at these past few years--instead of worrying about speed I focus on strength, endurance, balance, diet, and overall enjoyment. My main goal for any endeavor is to push myself physically and mentally in the beauty of nature and feel strong afterwards.

Therefore, everything in moderation (even moderation, at times :brow:). A long, active life is what I seek.

@lwien - thanks for your insight and for your contributions to this thread over the years. You too, @Your Highness.

It's great to be back here and motivating reading others' posts. Thank you all.

Cheers!

Isn't it great when you get back to enjoying physicality again....it's like having sex for the first time .... again. Or getting high again after that unscheduled t-break might be a better analogy.

Yup. It's times like that that I verbally congratulate my body with a high five and a "Job well done...."

(Of course, I make sure that there's no one else around to witness that....:uhoh:)

Good read on the martial arts stuff a few pages back. Inspiring me to tackle my Ti Chi bucket list item. Good to hear you are well and killing it again @Vapinghole . I had Lyme Disease last year that went undetected for 9 months and running really helped me fight it off and recover. I ran the Phillafelphia 1/2 marathon last weekend and PR'ed so I am starting to feel healthy again. @lwien you inspire me to train! I have another half planned in March and getting out in the cold NY weather can be challenging.

I too believe that a bit of herbal aromatherapy is good to help stretch and "get in the zone" on long runs but like to be fresh and focused for races.

my old roomate would smoke an entire blunt to his head before hitting his gym workout which i thought was batshit crazy. he claimed it "helps him focus".. i would never do that though. sometimes i take 1 or 2 small hits for a small head change right before my workouts but thats it. i cant be baked when i work out. i would MUCH rather save the main bodymelting vaping session for after the workout as a nice reward. That feels much more gratifying to me.

Since I last posted here a long while back I have obviously aged some more, as you do, but am still in the best shape of my life. This coincided with my transition to vaping a good few years back and it has just evolved from there. I gave up playing 5-a-side football (indoor soccer for my American cousins) earlier this year after I ruptured my ankle quite badly and as I hobbled around piling on the pounds for a few weeks afterwards I told myself I was going to step up the fitness again when fully recovered and avoid high risk-high impact potential sports and activities. Never looked back.

Gym at least 4 times per week and have tried it with a pre-sativa hit but much prefer the post gym option of deep Vape hit with my choons whilst neck deep in an Epsom salt bath. And stretch.....

Stay active & stay safe people.

Jan. 1. Due to an unusually demanding stretch at work (3 months maybe?), during which all exercise ceased, I start back up today. Four straight days of stretches light lifting light cardio and leg strenghtening activites before my first day on the skis this coming Thurs. I'm hoping for at least two trips to the Adirondacks this winter and a reignition of a fitness regime.

I think I am too modest to ever refer to myself as an athlete, though I'm definitely a vaporist.

Nevertheless, I think I can admit to being a decent runner, distances that qualify as long distance races are what I consider a nice start to a routine day, and the upper limit on my running distance is more about how far I think I can go without injuring something than what my lungs and muscles would do for me. I also very much enjoy backcountry hiking, backpacking, and general mountaineering, though I have little technical climbing skill.

It's too late in life for me to ever be seriously competitive and I end up spending more time stretching to avoid injury than running, but that's the game.

And yeah, I run baked. The run feeds off of it, and it feeds off of the run. I have another with my post-run protein cramming.

What's your dosing look like?

My experience as a college athlete (didn't smoke much in hs)
2.5 years on a top 15 D2 tennis team. (Would be around #60-70D1)

Most of the guys were internationals and smoked and drank like sailors. 5/8 players smoked at least 4 days a week. Trying to play tennis high is impossible but every single night in our team house they were combusting. That's what happens when 90% of your team is from South America or Eastern Europe. It didn't seem to affect their athletic ability at all though..... and honestly I wish they would legalize it for athletics. We woke up at 6, ran and did conditioning until 7:15. Played 3-4 hours in the afternoon then 3x a week lifted at night. There's a 20hr/week max in the offseason but we were always over that and it never got monitored since we went to a facility off campus. MMJ at night was a godsend.

I quite my Junior year due to injury, but I stay active and ran a marathon fueled by MMJ. More into powerlifting now and it's been very hit or miss. Some days it's perfect and some it's a distraction. I think it's more user variability though since I don't measure exact doses.

What's your dosing look like?

I vape throughout the day and whenever possible I time my run to fit with my usual consumption schedule so I can enjoy the effects fresh but not take extra doses needlessly.

Typically I vape 0.7g every 1.5-2 hours, as needed and as time permits. I do my pre-run stretch and bathroom rituals, then vape, dress out and run. When I get home, I do a quick post-run stretch, shower, eat a large protein meal, and enjoy another 0.7g dose. After cooling down I have a longer, fuller post-run stretch if time permits.

When nothing interferes with my desired schedule, I usually wake up, have a moderate breakfast and morning vape, wait 1-1.5 hours to digest and wake up, then begin the above routine, with my second vape session coinciding with my run (after stretching and shitting this is usually ~2 hours after waking).

I think cannabis impact on performance will depend on the sport. I specifically like very long runs, and I don't run with music since I find that distracting, so I feel like cannabis helps me get into a sustained rhythm and focus on my stride. The herbalist in me wants to claim the cannabis is beneficial to my stretch as well, but whether this is real fact or state of mind is something I can't answer truthfully.

If I had to watch a fast-moving ball I'd probably cut it back to a much smaller dose, so that I barely get a head change and it only loosens me up.

DAMN .7 is a good dose. Have you monitored the effects of different strains on your runs?
When I was doing longer distances green crack was my go to. It didn't motivate me to do exercise, but like you were saying it kind of locked me into zone. I'm really really curious on how different strains play out but unfortunately I can't just go to a dispensary and get a gram of each to try.

MJJ+Tennis didn't work out at all but it was amazing at night... muscle soreness, relaxation, etc. The 3 on the team from Europe swore by speed for matches... which was hilarious since they were all from different countries.

Once I get everything else prepared and out of the way (Half cup of strong coffee, Running cloths on, Music lined up, Foot grease applied to prevent chaffing, sneakers tied just so)..... I vape and stretch at the same time with my running music on setting the tone and getting my mind right.

I tend toward smaller and more hits when I'm getting ready to run. I take a hit leaving enough lung space for deep breathing techniques into the stretch, relax into that single stretch and finally exhale. Rinse and repeat for the next stretch. By the time I complete the stretch routine I'm buzzed, warmed up, loose and my mind is right.

Some folks meditate ... running does the same for me when I do the above. By the time I hit the 20 minute mark in the run I've got the runner's high melding with the MJ buzz, and coffee buzz and mentally I'm not even running anymore. Everything except running takes control of my thoughts and it's common for me to 'come out of it' and not remember parts of the run. I barely hear most of the music by that point. Mostly it's the beat. I know these kind of runs can be made up of garbage miles since my beats per minute are not being monitored nor pushed and I'm also not worrying about pace but mentally it's a 'I really needed that' clearing of the mental bullshit.

Occasionally I still seriously train for something but that's a whole different mental game.

I, uh, mistyped that.

My typical dose is 0.07g. 0.7g would be a crazy big pre-run toke! Might be fun but probably not great for speed!

I tend to favor indica or hybrid strains; for early day I prefer a hybrid for obvious reasons, but I still like some indica effects in there. I personally don't find it all that "depressive" in effect but more loosening. Goes great with a foam roller.
