Concentrates for Noobs - Q&A

cptchronic

Well-Known Member
What I've found is that with a proper purge with no heat or low heat, your concentrate will turn into a powder. I believe this is due to the alignment of the molecular structure allows it to be crystalline. Pressing ur powder as i described before essentially just gathers the powder into one chunk and because the powder is just crystals it will solidify as one chunk of shatter.

I've found my sappy consistency is usually from a too short of purge, too hot of purge or just the material is naturally sappy. Usually older material will be more sappy.

Holy...

Helping may be run of the mill to you, @cptchronic, but you just did me a *major* solid.

I owe you. Not sure what I know, but...ask anytime. :peace:

(There's a looong list of folks I seriously owe a big favor to here on FC, damn!)

You just gave me the "how to finish your qwet run" piece that I have (obviously) been missing. (Proved accurate for me, pics at end of post)

Thank you thank you thank you for:

Because here's what had happened in my qwet shatter runs!

1 - Not purged, I was horrified
2 - Over-reacted and purged on low heat forever, got powder.
3 - Over-reacted to low heat, purged at 175F just to "probably purged" (my history was earrl not shatter, went to comfort zone at high heat, but not long enough), got goo.
4 - Over-reacted in current run and went air-dry only, got powder. (I'm going to err in this direction I think)

I've found my sappy consistency is usually from a too short of purge, too hot of purge or just the material is naturally sappy. Usually older material will be more sappy.

I wouldn't mind knowing any ideas for sappy stuff? I will simply err towards powder consistency, but any way to "fix" gooey stuff?

You made my holiday weekend.

Good things back around to you ctcp, and peace everyone!

Yes I know everyone, pics or it didn't happen...:D

Sweet man I'm glad it worked out for ya!!

As for sappy consistencies, most of the time any concentrate that is already sappy will stay sappy unless you could get it to budder up.

You can use the same method as I described to get shatter but instead u will want to whip your concentrate when it's melted. Basically just trying to whip air into it. You dont have to do it very hard at all but you should see it change consistency right before your eyes. Generally will change to a more opaque brown color like peanut butter or yellow even. It may take a little bit of time to achieve this. If it won't budder up then more likely than not it its either to old of material and has degraded or there is residual solvent. To see if there is residual solvent put on parchment and see if it comes clean of the paper or if it slimes it up and scoots there may be a little solvent. High terpene extracts might be slimy as well so it's sometimes hard to tell.

Cool, so I would do this while melting the gooey stuff on a slick mat in the same manner, but whipping air into it?

I'm so happy I could pee my freaking self. I actually wanted to know how to make budder consistency or at least try it for once.

Will always be the latter, like it's reaaaaallly fresh, if you dig.

Oh man I'm really grateful, bud. I have 3-1/2 more ounces to process, about 1/2oz at a time. So I was sweating getting a fix in time - just figured I might half-ruin a lot of it, and hope it would at least vape...

The funniest part of all this...? I am waiting on my replacement Yocan Torch to get here today, and of course I'll still need to charge it, so...

Expect me to tag you with a vape report over in "whats in your vape" thread by later today!

AND you can expect me to pay it forward here on FC.

Peace and good things!

Yes u just wanna whip air into it while it's melted. It essentially rearranges the crystalline structure of the molecule and that's what makes it become an opaque budder.

Another thing I've noticed is the larger run you do, the more easily it can have residual solvent or be sappy. I think this is because the solvent has trouble escaping out from the resin. U shouldn't notice this being a problem unless ur using about an ounce at a time.

Looks like @cptchronic has helped out here already :)

I will point out the reason for the 'death sugar' is simply that you are purging in a very, very thin film. Once the solvent is gone, you do not have enough material to cover the entire base of the dish - this is leading to very rapid purging and as your shatter was spread over a much larger surface area than it can cover. This will reliably produce death sugar as you call it - however it is also ensuring you've purged efficiently. That super thin film leaves you much less likely to have residual solvent! Your smaller runs are meaning you'll need to take the extra step heating to melt it into a slab. I've told you about this before at one or two stages btw lol - golden rule:

Too shattery/dusty, use low heat (140f I find is good, not much more) and melt it together. Too sappy, use a cold pack :D

The reason you're noticing this is because of what I have said above.

Purging solvent from resin is very ineffective if the dish you have is itself too small to allow for a VERY thin film of your resin to cover it and spread evenly. It is also ineffective if the dish isn't perfectly flat so that the material can spread evenly over the surface. Too big of a run mean that you will have uneven deposits of oil in your purge vessel at the end and the thicker parts will purge much slower than the thinner film.

Yup, and now I also take back about it not being possibly degraded, I remember - the sappy run came from what was a bottle of second-wash only that I had collected over several runs, AND I had a problem where a few drops of vegetable oil got in there.

I just whipped it up over some low heat on the slick pad on stovetop warmer zone, not 100% shatter but will at least stay in a single piece, for instance, just a bit tootsie roll like.

I've told you about this before at one or two stages btw
Ha! Yes, I know - it's why I was embarrassed and tagged you, figured you would chuckle.

And so it was that... I was doing it, I realize now, with a dusty film still covering the dish, and trying to melt it just like it was in the dish after purge.

I should have collected it first into a smaller pile and THEN hit it with the 140F heat, not heat the whole dish again... Sigh.

(I really am kicking myself...holy crap that was ridiculous on my part)

Moving it to a slick pad once powdery was..."Ah, there it goes...Ohhhh! NOW I see..." That's when I got it. :)

So, with this new big 15 x 9 dish, I'd love to run more - it sounds like (looks like?) I have enough glass to hold more then?

This last run was 16g of flower in 500ML of EC189 - how much bigger could I go do you think? I mean, that would be...unbelievable. If I could run an ounce at a time I mean. Any increase would be great.

Thanks hb. And as usual...sorry I didn't hear you the first couple trillion times. :ugh:

Okay, post office says Yocan Torch is in mailbox! Of course I'm homebound, so need wife to get home and bring it to me first. A couple hours of charging and...

I'll be off to do a vape report...

Peace everyone!

No problem at all brother, I know I am very clear when I communicate, but usually it is in the form of a deluge of words, and few mortal men can be expected to remember all of what I say, even me! lol

Gave me a great chuckle though reading that once you got the sugary material onto your mat and then it clicked for you that this is how you fix this problem. These moments are my favorite! You think you fucked something up but then all of a sudden, you figure out a way around the issue and all is back on track :)

Keep it up brother, that final product came out looking very nice! The size of runs you are doing in the dishes you are using is great and I think it is worth keeping the large dish/small run technique so you end up with sugar to melt together in this fashion as it will help you be able to be confident of a more efficient purge :)

@herbivore21 ,

Thanks for the encouraging and kind words, bud. I'm still laughing my freaking ass off...

"OldOyler, if it's dust then just melt it over 140F heat."

(I keep walking over with entire purge dish, as is, unscraped)

"I'm trying, hb, I'm trying - it's making it WORSE!"...

Oh man oh man...Peace!

There are little squares at the top of the box that you type a post in.

The 7th over from the left looks like a link or knot. Click that, paste your link into the popup box, click Insert to Finish. That is for regular links.

For photos, click on the small box immediately (1st) to the right of the smiley face and do the same process. (It looks like a framed picture of a mountain)

I'll ask the mods to clean up those two posts for you. I feel for you - should see what I can *still* do here with links, photos, etc.

Peace!

Can anyone recommend a great way to store my oil? I just made a qwiso and it's pretty gooey. I have it on parchment paper. Everytime I go to grab some it leads his streaks everywhere and I want to maximize the amount I have. Anyone have suggestions on how to store it and how to get it into what ever to store it? I'm looking to vape it in a haze or Vapir rise. I'm so new to this. Very first time in the concentrate world and my qwiso wasn't that bad.

Generally if a solvent based extract is slick on the parchment and leave streaks/smears on it when you try to get some on the dabber4, this should be approached with caution. If you have a little too much residual solvent left, this is exactly how your oil will behave. Generally even the runnier mmj extracts should come off the parchment easily when they are properly purged, except for some distillates (especially high-terp containing, low THCA containing low-temp fractions) which are obviously not relevant here. :)

@herbivore21 all I did was a qwiso and let it evaporate for about 3 days and did not notice any alcohol or solvent left in my dish prior to scraping. Should I be doing something else as a last step after I scrape off my dish onto my parchment paper?

This is what my first run looked liked.

First ISO - Think Went Wrong

As per the above thread where you mentioned this run, my response is that you definitely did not finish the purge. Air purging in room temp/pressure is generally not going to finish any purge! Heat/vacuum must be enlisted!

Hey everyone, so I'm just going to post this here because I don't really feel that single question threads do much but clog up the forums here. Maybe @herbivore21 can help me out.

I'm going to be decarbing a small amount (under an eighth) for a batch for edibles that I'm making, but I'm curious as to what I should put it in for the decarb. I'm concerned that if I use glass, it will stick to the glass and not get mixed evenly when I pour the oil/butter in. But I have a few small pyrex oven safe dishes off hand. I know that you can use like silicone muffin cups or whatever, which I imagine would do well with not sticking, but I don't have any around and I really don't want to go pick some up. Is it worth the added expense for such a small amount?

No, purge on pyrex. Scrape finished product off of warm glass :)

I never purge on silicone, never ever.

I imagine the info is in here somewhere but after going through quite a few pages I can't find what I want easily. I don't want to make concentrates and I'm nervous about using a torch. No dabbing. I wonder if one of the vapes I already have might work with concentrates. Do you have any suggestions? The boundless came with a small metal container- is that for concentrates?

imo, there is much less point to concentrates if you aren't dabbing them. it's that fast heavy dose that makes them stand out.

Is the bottle glass or plastic? If it was plastic, never use plastic again and learn from this that you will probably never get all that you have out of the bottle as your only option is to try to scrape it out. If it is glass than you can apply heat to the backside of the glass with a hot plate or something to warm up the BHO to transfer into the Pyrex dish/cup.
