The Bud Toaster - (currently: Model 14, version 3)

@Hogni - ah, yes, The Bud Toaster saga ...

i have only very late in my life, come to realize important truths about my personal skillset. i would like to think that had i gotten the proper mentoring, say when i was 6 years old, a lot of the "difficulties" i experience could have been alleviated, ameliorated, or even lessened ... but i would have been a different person as a result of the unintended consequences. Perhaps.

current status ...

i have got what i consider to be the "final proof of concept" implementation prototype ... that is to say, I've got a complete kit (as they say in UK, not a box of unassembled parts as they understand in the USA) that i absolutely love, is perfect, wouldn't change a note, i use it every day, type of kit. (i love the Brits - they are so CIVILIZED).

so i have been able to adjust the leather cutting templates a final time. i am verifying the template with tracing paper over the matte board skeleton ... and i have just enough leather to make a final-final-final case ... then cut the leather and assemble.

at which point i order enough leather for a dozen kits, build the dozen units, the federal laws in USA will have changed to allow cannabis paraphernalia manufacture and sales, set up a manufacturing facility and make 1000 kits.

[like Morpheus says: "You're living in a dream world, Neo" ... little known fact: The Matrix is the only movie HD has watched more than 30 times]

i would also need to order more batteries ... but i've got all the other parts i need in my workshop.

MEANWHILE ...

i have a retail website that accepts credit cards, and there is this requirement for PCI DSS Compliance - which is just a crooked plot by crooked banks to move the end of the liability chain onto the individual merchants (like me).

after ignoring this inconvenience for a bit over a year, i come to realize my processor is charging me a $175 per month non-compliance fee - the rat bastards.

so, should be a simple matter to upgrade my SSL certificate from TSL 1.0 to TSL 1.2, right? Well, not exactly ... see my web host company's Windows plan can not be upgraded to the higher, mandated, level ... of course they wouldn't tell me this fact until after waiting over a week for them to respond to my inquiry and calling them 3 or 4 times over 2 days.

so, now i must not only get a higher level SSL certificate, but also transfer my website to another host plan, and copy over my MS SQL Server database.

Despite being a programmer for 50 years, i don't do this web stuff much - actually, chasing the nonstop evolution in web tech as VC finds different avenues for idle cash - ya know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and well, my website and business has been running just fine, thank-you very much, for the last 15 years, and none of this new newer newest technology provides any fucking benefit to my business.

Hackers! Fuck THOSE rat bastards, too. Back when i was just a kid, a hacker was the epitome of programmer coolness - well, as cool as a nerd can be, but damn, the hackers in the beginning were fucking awesome: greenblatt, gosper, samuelson, etc. etc. plus Minsky and Papert and McCarthy

Wikipedia said:
Richard D. Greenblatt is an American computer programmer. Along with Bill Gosper, he may be considered to have founded the hacker community, and holds a place of distinction in the Lisp and the MIT AI Lab communities.

[little known fact: HD once rebooted the internet ... back when there were only a dozen nodes on the internet, the BBN IMP box at Stanford AI Lab crashed, i answered the 3am phone call and reset the fucker.]

So, feeling a need to eat (and, getting some pressure from the gf) business comes first. most of my business comes from the internet, some is dealers/wholesale. can't delay any longer.

and this shit all happened while i was in the middle of a major change in emphasis of product and marketing ... and going into xmas season ... and, really, there are no simple jobs.

well, my days are full.

what was the question?

Thanks Hippie for your reply! BT-Saga? Up to now better BT-Fame! ;-) BTW after more than 10 years of development 'Fame' would be a nice and self-ironic name for this seems to be great device.

Care of new FDA Law! Did you have seen my thread about this item?

Do you intend to make a 220V-Version? A whip-adapter would be nice for using the BT with a water tool.

the battery charger will be universal, only needing the correct wall plug per country. however, for AC power, any power supply that can deliver from 6VDC to 20VDC at 5 amps or so can be used ... with the correct Deans plug, but performance will not be quite as crisp as when using the supplied battery pack.

A whip-adapter would be nice for using the BT with a water tool.
the idea of using a plastic tube/connector with the ALL GLASS VAPOR PATH Bud Toaster is a violation of the user agreement ... and i would have to confiscate the BT instantly.

please, no plastic tubing, no metal screens, no robot farts ... this is a pure vapor device. control your demons.

besides, i have a different design for using this heater controller with a bong ... one that will have better heat transfer to the air stream.

yes, i have seen your thread about pending FDA regulations - i am hoping that only applies to tobacco devices.

well, if the laws change the schedule will be greatly accelerated ... i'm an old guy, too (68) - i want to see this happen before i croak. there is a lot of money pouring into the cannabis biz, and the projections are off the chart - greed will force a change, me thinks, as always.

HD without knowing you personally I feel like I do not only keep coming back to this thread to see development of your ingenious device, but to read your random wisdom also. I actually cracked when read about you restarting the internet (!!) What a legendary act is that! You are kind of my hero of sort to be as precise as I can right now, lol :)

goodness, end of year, and lo and behold, i have passed a major milestone ... i have made two units of the same case design!

Case 42a2 ... i have a "tech pack" - templates and such - and should be able to fabricate this design.

i got distracted with Case 43 for a week, but that idea just didn't work as imagined ... so Case 42a2 it is!

so the plan is to make two more with the case 42a2 templates - one in black and one in hot pink (for a special someone) at which point it will be time to make the first dozen complete kits.

and then sit and wait to see if Jeff ("good people don't smoke marijuana") is going to upset our new world order ... gosh, i hope not.

good year / bad year ??? ... buckle up Dorothy, it could get interesting

so i came up with an instruction card ... this is attached to the inside of the case cover:

picture.php

does this make sense??? or is it too "busy"?

lazylathe

Almost there...
I think it will be perfect once we have the "herbal Cube" in our hands!
Trying to understand instructions without the actual unit to mess around with is like trying to build the Lego Death Star without instructions and just a pile of grey blocks! LOL!

do you have a website that's up and viewable now

actually, that was in reference to my "in real life" website that runs my ecommerce business - and i am still grappling with that ... reacquiring my developer mindset is always a struggle since programming is not my day-to-day task. Although what i enjoy the most. Wrote the first website in 2000 with periodic upgrades whenever the hosting platform changes (mainly due to the need to keep ahead of hackers - rat bastards!) which is the situation going into 2017. In the beginning of the internet, back in 1966, the idea of hackers disrupting the network was unthinkable - hence the situation we all are in now.

i appreciate the comments on the instruction chart ... i'll keep refining it and by the time the cube is released it should be better ... my gf is always "guiding" me toward a better solution, but she is definitely NOT my target customer. lol.

@Hippie Dickie - I get your called subroutine procedural instructions... I think...
Is this it? (imagine your light and button icons in place of cumbersome words below)

How to use the Herbal Cube:

Step -- Mode -- Display

Push plug in & turn on Therm -- Standby Mode-- Blue solid, Green flashing every 3 sec

Hold button 2 until Solid Green -- Warmup Mode -- Red solid heating, Green blinking

Inhale when setpoint reached -- Session Mode -- Red on/off flickering, Green blinking

End session after 7.5 min timeout -- Timeout Mode -- Red off, Green flashing every 3 sec

Unplug -- Off -- Off

Options:

Change temp: in session mode, Click 1 to increase 5F, or Click 2 to decrease 4F

Save your current temp as the new setpoint temp: in session mode, hold button 2 until solid Green then release

Extend your session: After 7.5 min timeout, in timeout mode, hold button 2 until solid Green then release

Reset to Default 385F setpoint temp: before a session, in standby mode, hold button 1 until solid Green then release.

Edit: my formatting did not work GRRRRR

Is this it?

yes, except i have a 60 second time delay before the Green LED begins blinking to show "at or above setpoint temperature" ... so no blink during warm-up.

explanation: the thermocouple reads that the heater has reached setpoint temperature almost immediately (about 3 seconds), the extra 60 seconds provides time needed to heat soak the glass oven tube and heat soak the herb with radiant heat ... and, on top of this, i usually wait an extra 30 seconds for a thicker first hit ... i may just change the Green LED timer to 90 seconds when i change the algorithm to accommodate the faster-acting ribbon heater ... right now there is A LOT of overshoot on startup ... ribbon response is like 10x faster than the wire - i need to tune it down a bit.

The Green LED has a slow blink during the session as the algorithm dances above and below setpoint ... pretty cool, i think.

Hippie Dickie, I appreciate the Cube concept. An idea for bringing it to the market: you might offer it as a kit, perhaps? Maybe even explicitly sold "as is"? Would save you a lot trouble in production, not to mention returns and repairs. Just a thought. Keep up the good work
