Help! Wheezing caused by Vaping?

Hello Friend,
I was / am in a similar place as you I have cerebral palsy and vape for pain, I dab, magical butter, blunts you name it but only vaping for 6+ months at a time has caused me this wheezing, lucky for you I have been to a doctor multiple times for multiple episodes of this....

They gave me an inhaler to help the acute wheezing but the issue is THC is pollen and pollen cause sinus drainage and when you vape herbs micro pieces of herb are in the vapor which cause them to get in your friends throat. The wheezing is caused actually by mucus in your friends lungs from the pollen/reaction & the dryness of the vape. I have also gotten sinus infections from harsh vapor of 10 bags a day irritating my lung lining. I have had my lungs checked and everything with test and scans.

what vape is he using and I can give specific advice for specific model, but tell him to alternate between smoking and vaping and edibles. Smoke has more moisture in it than vapor, even with ice vapor will still cause the wheezing, but mixing it up helps relieve the symptoms and allergy meds

Man if the OP is looking to stay at the same overall level of usage and just minimize the time spent vaping, the stress on their airways and the amount of overall vapor consumed (which from my reading of the OP is what seems to be the solution) - then small dabs are what we are talking about and big dabs are irrelevant to the discussion.

If you're vaping .1g-.2g of flower in a flower vape, what I am suggesting is that if you squish that .1 flower and dab the resulting ~.02-.04g of rosin, you will inhale less vapor (and so have less stress on your respiratory tract) to get more effect. That is the kind of dose I am talking about above.

Also remember there are many ways to consume a small amount of oil slowly. Using a vapexnail at very low temp allows you to consume your dab in several, or even many small draws (best of both worlds!) over a small 'session' if you so choose. Still, a small-medium .02-.04g dab on an enail is not by any stretch going to provide 'one huge draw' - more like one small to medium draw rather than prolonged huffing on the same .1-.2g bowl of flowers for 5-15 minutes depending on the vape :2c:

I am not suggesting large dabs, because that would greatly increase the user's tolerance and as you say, could even exacerbate rather than resolve the OP's problem. Still, I think small dabs are a definite avenue to explore to resolve a number of their stated issues.

I agree with you in that I do not suggest getting a harder hitting, high restriction vape like the Sublimator if you are already getting wheezing/respiratory restriction when breathing - it requires you to inhale very hard and this is going to push your lungs harder. However, the sublimator would work on a purely time saving basis where you are looking to spend less time vaping flower to get the same effect. :peace:

I regularly squish .2-.5g and rarely squish >5g. If you have super fire flower .1 would get you a small dab of .01-.02 which is a great microdose amount. If not, start with .2-.3g ;) But remember for microdosing only dab small amounts of the return at a time

I squish at 210 or so using 1000-2000 psi of pressure using a purpose made heat press. I do not use temps higher than 230 ever. I am using too much pressure to go much higher in temp,it can cause damage to the parchment.

Heavy asthmatic, heavy user, variable autist here. I switched to mostly squeezing out rosin with hair straighteners, and doing dabs. I can def feel when I've been vaping a lot of flower, my lungs get way worse and way wheezier. Small, continuous dabs until I've got myself where I need to be makes my lungs way less irritated. I then top up with flower vaping if I need to round out the hit. I have a tendency to vape all day, every day.

Dabs is so much less material and vapour for the same hit. My lungs thank me for that.

Also, some vapes have been horrendous at making me cough. The main culprit being the volcano, unless it was THE lightest bag possible, I would cough like crazy. Adding a cotton filter to theoretically filter the larger particles certainly seemed to help. Same with Lily. I couldnt handle the vapor in the end and had to have a longer air path.

Low temps, long vapor paths, reclaimable filtration, dabs. Those are the things that have stopped me from choking, the dabs being possibly the most successful :)

Im terrible at remembering to drink water tho, so thanks for the water reminders this thread has provided :)

Perhaps I missed it, but if particulates are a serious contributor to your issues, have you put vapes through a water pipe and, if so, did it help.

Also, the idea of putting a small pure organic cotton or degummed hemp fiber filter somewhere in your vapor path should also help. If putting through a WP, then perhaps a drop down with a bit of a filter in it would add to the benefit.

I do find that they Volcano bag vapor is rather dry and hence a bit irritating. Just the nature of the beast.

Cheers

Asthma here also and vaping is much more bothersome to me than smoking while I am partaking. However, weezing later is gone and so is hacking up black soot. In fact, my lungs feel the clearest after vaping. Noticeable clearness and that lasts a while.

Vapes that work for me particularly: Vapor Genie, Flowermates and Underdog with buck/boost. I find the dry flower tanks helpful in the Flowermates or a half load under a screen. I hardly use the Genies anymore.

Vapes that invoke a cough response in me in particular: Vapolution 2.0, Boundless CFX, both great vapes but not for my personal use. Wife has the CFX and seems to be grinning a lot lately.

I have been a severe chronic asthmatic all my life. I posted previously so here is the link.

To summarize. I discovered the Vapvap. Learned to use it with a mouth pull rather than an inhaled toke and I always use a degummed hemp fiber filter at the bottom of the bowl.

These three things have come together and I now no longer cough or experience any chest discomfort. The mouth pull and filter are essential.

I hope this helps you.

Mouth pull! Good phrase and essential! Sipping was as close as I could get to expressing that. Ever burn yourself with the VC before it cools? Lots of VapCap fans around.

Nope. I've never burned myself nor have I combusted using my Vapcaps. I use my Vapcap several times every day. It is different from most other "butane" vaporizers in three distinct ways:

- any heat source will do; 1, 2, 3 or 4 jet lighter, bic lighter, candle, stove element, campfire, solar heater etc.

- the temperature indicating cap lets you know when to stop heating and begin toking.

- you heat the cap till it clicks .... THEN toke. So there's no fire near your face like a Lotus or Vapor Genie as an example. It is a very relaxing ritual. Vapcaps are fun!

If you can handle a cigarette without buring yourself, you will be fine.

Now, having said that, there was a member here, can't remember who, and you know who you are, who grabbed the VC by the hot tip and burned the Dynavap brand into his thumb. But I thought he was taking brand loyalty a bit far.

Which one ones do you have and which to treat VAS with?

All of them....

I gave away my all glass OG Vapcap.

The ti tipped Vapcaps including one Omnivap are the only vapes I use now. Every day, all day long. I have several but some are destined to be Xmas gifts. I can't think of a better gift for a fellow stoner. I love these tiny, genius, beautiful devices. I have Dynavap brand stems and bodies. But I also have stems made by @phattpiggie. The business end of the Vapcap, ti tip and cap, fit right on. I also have a few stems from another woodworker that were made with an 8mm bore to accept the ti tip.

All VAS (Vaporizer Aquisition Syndrome) has been cured. I look to no other vape now. This is the vape for me. I love the look, the size, the function, the efficiency, the ritual and the modular build. All the pieces are interchangeable. LEGO for stoners. They're fun to play with.

Now I have a bad case of VAS (Vapcap Aquisition Syndrome) Hahaha!

I really need to give the vapcap a try, I'm asthmatic as well.. I sometimes tend to get tired after a session with my arizer right now because of the draw resistance. Nice collection.

How can I use degummed hemp fiber on a vape like the arizer air or CFV?

Sorry to disagree with others on here, but personally I found that unless using a watertool, the vapcap is way more irritating on my throat and chest than say my mighty or my cloud evo (with hydratube)

Just out of interest, is that the OG, a Ti tipped model or both?

Is this a typo or a riddle? If you can't choose between the CFX and CFV, just drop the bothersome last letter and buy a CF.

Hello FC,

My brother wanted to register here and ask this but he couldn't get his confirmation email. Pakalolo tried a lot to help him get setup but oh well. So I turned him to vaporizing about a year ago but now he has issues.

I have been vaping every single day for the last 9 months or so. I'm wheezing now. When I breathe in and breathe out, I can hear this whistling wheezing coming out of nose. Is vaping ultimnately harmful for you? I don't vape dry. I like milking the tube as they say. So I thought having water filtered vaporization is going to be better for lungs and that's why I have been doing it that way. What should I do? Should I smoke? Should I find other methods to use the medicine? I have noticed lately no matter what vape and strain I use, I'm wheezing. My health is ultimately more important but I'm also taking the medicine for my health. It was supposed to help me and not cause harm to my body. I'm kinda at a loss here as to what to do. Should I quit?

Any of you guys been in these shoes before and know what's the next step?
I have to throw another thought into the mix. Coughing.

In my combusting days, coughing was a regular occurrence. Simply came along with the smoking part of MMJ.

Then on to Vaping, and any coughing is cut down 90% or more. (Only the occasional lung busting eye watering hit causes a cough.).
When we vape, there are oils and maybe waxes that go along the for the ride to our lungs, along with those delicious Terps and cannabanoids.

How much of that oil/wax is absorbed in relation to remaining on the lining of the esophagus and lungs, not sure any study has been yet done on this.

Can this buildup cause wheezing? Don't know, but logical deduction dictates that it absolutely could.

So, in addition to the suggestions from others previously, maybe a forced lung clearing cough a while after vaping would help break up this buildup and even get it out of your airways?

Then again, I may not even be close to the cause of the wheezing in your brother's case?

Asthma cough reaction is immediate and can occur apart from vaping like inhale of cold air or allergens or dust or whatever but smoking herb never did that. Some vapes are kinder that way and one that works for me may not work for another. Mornings can be rougher with asthma than later.

I've had a fairly bad cough since I started vaping again.

Vaping ejuice didn't trigger coughing with me, nor did smoking cigarettes or ripping bongs prior to this.

Not sure if I'm sick or what, I've tried lots of OTC and general health stuff to try and remedy it, in addition to using all of my current vapes thru water pipes to no alleviation.

I should go to a doctor and plan to, but was curious what people thought.

I had asthma as a little kid, but I grew up to start smoking cigs (which was one of my triggers) after I had "outgrown" my perceptual symptoms.

I stay hydrated etc etc... Do I just need to let my throat/lungs recover? Or is vaping continually going to destroy my throat lungs?

I can definitely get effects, but usually cough, and if I want strong effects, I'm almost put off because of how much coughing it'd invoke, if that gives an idea of what it's like. It's a dry cough too. Rarely does anything come up and it's not like bloody or black so...

I had bronchitis spring of '14 and '15 while using my MFLB lol, but I think that was unrelated and a round of antibiotics cleared it. I dunno sorry for the rant but it's been 2 months now :(

edit:

I'd mostly like to stick with flower. Concentrates, while certainly nice, are more of just a treat for me. Access isn't an issue. It's a different high and needs proper handling/tools etc.

I have yet to try the hemp fibre, but I can't see how that would make much of a difference if using a waterpipe doesn't help.

Squiby gives good advice. I find convection may be more bothersome for me than conduction. Flowermates are gentile for me, with asthma. Mouth pulls really help. No, mouth pulls are essential! Haven't tried filters or VapCap yet. The flower tanks help with the Flowermates and are just too handy.

Smoking caused very little immediate coughing with me, nicotine or cannabis. Funny how that seems quite common. You will find a temp/technique that works for you. My mflb is gentle also but getting just niche use these days. Same with Vapor Genies but there is a learning curve and flame finesse is required at the same time you are making yourself less capable of finesse.

Might look at Arizer Air or Pax2 which is under $200 now. I like the Flowermates for value. Almost all my vaping is now Flowermates or my Underdog with very small load.

For me conduction always results in a wheeze that lasts anywhere from a day to a couple weeks, and seems to affect me worse than smoking. Convection doesn't cause this for me, just minor discomfort after heavy use. Gonna try a portable which can be used with the mouth pull technique as I feel this is key.

Also starting to wonder if conduction may be worse if your herbs aren't clean to begin with. Perhaps conduction sucks out more unwanted compounds? I'd love to see a study on this, and also try with both clean tested herb and otherwise. I'm sure the herb I've had access to lately wouldn't pass industry standard testing.
