"How You're Making Edibles Wrong"

I'm kinda hot and cold on the article. The part I didn't like was that she spent a great deal of time explaining how 10mg is a 'normal' dose. My normal dose isn't in line with her already. But the calculator link made it better http://www.jeffthe420chef.com/calculator

Cleaning herb is suspiciously close to making bubble hash... Now I'm wondering if I should just bubble most everything, and then add bubble to butter or whatnot as required? Or do I look like a glazed donut?

So basically you need a command of 6th grade math?

In the middle of cooking 6oz into oil here and turning it into 1/2 a year worth of fudge.

I agree here. But I think the article was explaining a generic dose... Not a dose for someone with super power tolerance like you @killick.

The part I found most interesting was water curing the herb prior to processing it into butter, etc. If that gets the weed taste out; that's a plus imo. And for those who make edibles out of abv, this might be just the trick to get them palatable.

I really like the idea of water-curing and blanching, if only to ensure your herb is spray-free. The strong taste can be off-putting to many.

So checking @BuzzDanklin instructions I've just realized I have around 500 grams of quick-washed herb, and 300 ABV, just looking for an experiment. Cover me, I'm going in :)

I would love to see a comparison between blanching and water curing, that turns recycling and no waste to the next more palatable level.

I get the highest quality edibles with the most consistent results by using concentrates. I think turning your flower into bubble hash would be an ideal alternative, but even better (because you can visually watch the decarb process through the oven door), if you can squish the hash down to rosin. It takes only 5 minutes to decarb then the oil is ready to mix in whatever you want.

It's really funny that you mention this as I've been on the same train recently. The bubble run was great, and the next will be easier. The High Five press, I just discovered today, has been ready for pickup for a week now. I'll look forward to letting you know how it works out :)

Reclaim from a dab rig still has a reasonable THC content and also other actives present. The terpenes are gone but I have made some kick ass edibles with only reclaim and ABV infused and filtered coconut oil.

10mg? Pretty sure we were rocking 300mg root beers and having a great time. They were strong but not unpleasant to someone with a high tolerance.

A 10mg Zoom Ball from Growing Kitchen sent my GF into a 20-hour acid trip type episode when we visited denver for her ophthalmology conference.

She is very petite and 10mg nuked her poor little soul. My mistake for assuming someone who never tried cannabis before would be able to take that. 10mg felt normal to me lol

I love watching newbies try edibles. I once knocked out 3 very large people who swore homemade lemon candies wouldn't touch them... One of them almost drown, looking up at the rain, from a waterlogged stool beside a wet fire...
Good times ;)

I found this article on vice.com by the 'Julia Child of Weed' and author of 'The 420 Gourmet: The Elevated Art of Cannabis Cuisine' that I thought was a really good explanation of how to dose properly with edibles. It also explains how and why we should 'clean' our herb prior to using it for edibles and a whole lot more....

My favorite (& easiest recipe) simply involves baking half a teaspoon (about 0.40g) of good flowers in cookie dough...and blasting off.

Am I crude? Or is the Julia Child of Weed too hoity-toity?

I know it's not very sophisticated but it works well, & quickly, even on a pretty full stomach.

Does anyone else get nauseous when eating unprocessed baked buds? I don't- & never thought much about it, except once I read that if you look at cannabis leaves under a microscope, there are tiny thorns that could irritate the stomach. But I figure that if you look @ any plant under a microscope, it could be scary.

Lmao... I think she's probably too hoity toity.

However, I have gotten nauseous from edibles made with straight weed if that's what you are talking about when you refer to 'unprocessed baked buds.' Not so much from the new edibles you can get made from concentrates or the type made from infused oils.

Yes that's what I meant, straight weed.

We're not very progressive, cannabis-wise, here in NY - so I make my own edibles. And, at least, I know what goes into them - & usually what to expect, strength wise .

I eventually couldn't stand oil saturation and dosage limitations... :)

I take xx grams of shatter and decarb it in a ss container in a 250F veg oil bath (obviously stage the heat over 10 minutes or so). I do it when I am getting ready to make whatever recipe.

(EDIT: I make the shatter myself, so that's a big plus. For me, it's the best way to get from dry flowers to edibles with no weedy-ness)

This method lets me know almost spot on what amount of THC (and hence hopefully the other cannabinoid ratios) is in a recipe overall.

I simply *mix* in unsalted butter pat by pat into the ss container with warmed decarbed shatter - now an absolut earl - and slosh it all out in to the dry cookie mix (what I use).

Mix well with spatula and nitrile gloves and bang. I can now make XX cookies at XX dosage. (Less than 60mg for me is pointless)

I usually shoot for 1.2g decarbed shatter into 12 cookies. Hitting right around 100mg-ish in my estimation. (Caps I do the same but at a 30mg dose - no butter obviously - but start with shatter rather than making earrl directly from a mash and using that, I get a much purer product without a lot - if any - of the oil or cannabis taste itself beyond anything already significant in the terpene profile of the shatter).

Anyway just my thing, wanted to throw it out there.

Peace all!

I am not discrediting you in anyway, but 10mg doesn't seem like it would even get a baby high... I consistently snap through 0.5grams in each bowl and am pretty high but not anywhere near even feeling sick. I've snapped .8 and a full gram in one shot. By standard google pot math that would put my dose at 500 to 1,000mg? I'm never gonna get high on edibles unless I eat the whole damn batch every time. Something has to be off on my math?? I get REAL high, like way way up there. Hmmmmm...

You math is wrong. from what I have read 1g of 20% THC bud has 20mg THC. I could be mistaken though. Newbie to making edibles.

1g = 1000mg

20% thc in 1gram = 200mg

Then actual yield of *that* amount then depends on how much was left in avb, or if fresh bud was used, and then what method (qwet, rosin, bubble, etc.) one is using to extract the goodies.

Also, whether it is going into food vs capsules is a huge factor. Won't expound here, plenty out there about all this, but caps allow significantly more actives to survive the trip down the intestinal tract, hence I use 1/3 the starting amount of absolute oil in caps as opposed to sublingual or medibles.

Peace all!

@OldOyler You are right. Sorry about that.

So far my first batch seems pretty weak. Posted what I did in new thread. Disappointed with the strength so far and I made oil capsules. But still if 1g of $20% THC has 200mg THC then .2 works out to 40mg. No way when I vape 20% (small bowl) does it feel like 40mg THC compared to oil from LP. 2ml of 20% oil gets me pretty wasted a lot more than .2 of 20% does that's for sure.
