convection vs conduction

Hey guys i use the flowermate mini. And the arizer air. Looking into the grasshopper but i dont want like two big hits then done. Plus i like a session lol. I'm looking at the new davinci but i'm now torn as to what to do as everyone's saying convection is the way to go. I understand one is heated in the bowl and one is pulling hot air over the material. But what actual differences do you think i would notice ? Many thanks

I should note the Grasshopper can be as many hits as you want it to be - turn the temp down low and you can get a handful of small puffs before switching to a higher temperature (stirring the herb can also help increase session length). I can make my hopper last for 10 minutes, or 1 minute depending on how I use it

as everyone's saying convection is the way to go
Don't always follow the crowd. Many people base their opinions of vaporizers on only a small handful of vapes they have personally used. Out of the dozens of vaporizer I have personally used, there are several amazing conduction vaporizers, and several only so-so convection vaporizers.

I understand one is heated in the bowl and one is pulling hot air over the material. But what actual differences do you think i would notice
Well more to the point
Conduction = physical contact between oven walls (heated) and herb - tighter loading with fine grind is usually suggested for optimal performance of a conduction vape

Convection = air is PREHEATED externally to the oven containing the herb and then forced through the herb when taking a hit. These vapes tend to have more flexibility in load sizes (smaller or larger load size doesn't alter performance too much).

The only major difference I have really found between the two is taste (which can be very subjective). I personally find that my conduction vaporizers tend to impart a more "roasted" flavor to my herb than my convection vaporizers. (Although note - my convection vapes can also produce a roasted flavor when improperly used as well!)

I should note there is yet a third method of heat transfer most people forget to mention - RADIANT! Unfortunately radiant vaporizers typically require more energy to maintain temperature, and thus quite inefficient for portable vaporizing needs and why you don't see it used very often in vapes. In fact a true IR vape is still on my wishlist of vapes to acquire some day

I'm sure you will get very personal and opinionated responses to this question. For me, I prefer convection. All of my current daily vapes are convection with the exception of the Vapman which is a combination. Conduction vapes have never tasted as good or worked as well. Given how many products there are , I might start a feud with such a statement, however, my results have been consistent enough to lean towards convection. good luck

I've come to believe that the "convection is king" myth is just that; A Myth.

I have both conduction and convection vapes in my daily rotation and don't see either style as being superior to the other.

If you find a vaporizer you like and it works for you that's what matters, Vapor is Vapor no matter how your herbs are heated to vaporizing temps.

Exactly, they are different. But one is not superior to the other

Every vape has it's pros and cons - there is no such thing as the "perfect vaporizer" for everyone

@Longen

WARNING!!! You are about to enter the zone of VAS (Vapourizer Acquisition Syndrome) hold on to your wallet because things are about to get hazy. :freak:

Resistance is futile. :borg:

I predict that you'll end up with:

2-3x Conduction vapes
1-2x Convection vapes
1000000 (varying glass pieces)

You'll start reading up about rosin so you'll end up with a mod or pen or nail or banger...etc...at some point

And some vaped veg from your veg tree

@GreenHopper i think i'm going to get into trouble with my partner allready when i order a new vape lol. I'll buy her some clothes might divert her from checking my bank statements.
I have in my posession at present, the air, the storm, and the flowermate mini which i absolutely adore. I've had in the past, an EV2 from epicvape, the solo, the ascent and a couple of others. I do love the look of the grasshopper but reviews have put me off. The iq looks good. The pax 3 looks cool too, there's so many and i want them all to be honest lol. All you peeps are right tho. Everyone has there personal preferences in a vape. Thanks tho to everyone for the replies. I love reading everyones opinions and tips.

The EV-2 is still one of my favorite convection vapes. I thought discontinuing it and only producing the e-nano was a huge downgrade for EpicVape. But when using the EV-2 and Vapolution 2 or 3 side by side I love 'em all.

I stupidly got rid of my EV2 cheap. I've regretted it ever since :-( such a beast. I have been very tempted to get a nano i must say.

The vapes I've used that come closest to the EV-2 in function are the SSV, DBV, and LSV. with the Da Buddha being my favorite with the Whip and Life Saber direct draw stem. If i lost my EVs I'd grab another DBV.

I agree completely. I think conduction has gotten an undeserved bad reputation. To me, its still a very valid vaporization tech.

I also don't necessarily agree with everything shown in the Conduction vs Convection graphic shown above. For example, I disagree that conduction is harder for a novice to operate. Quite the opposite, in my view. Most conduction vapes are simple to operate and need no technique. With a number of convection vapes, particularly portables, the operator controls the speed of air over the heater...and hence the temp of the air....and puts the operator right in the middle of controlling the process. See some people's view of an FF2, for example, and the technique needed.

The main discriminator, IMO, between conduction and convection is that conduction tend to need to be used in a session format. That is, you pretty much need to vape all that you load in a session. This is due to the oven staying heated between draws and, if you turn it off half way, when reheating and vapign the rest it tends to taste awful to me. Conductions are, to me, vape until complete. Convection vapes tend to support a "one hit and done" approach as vaporization pretty much stops when you quit drawing.

I also agree that most/many convection vapes also have a conduction component as the walls of the oven get hot during a session. Given the temp of the oven walls at the end of a session with my GH, I'm convinced that some portion of the function is from conduction. Can't prove it, but those interior oven walls do get very hot.

I also don't agree that stirring is required for conduction and not convection. I wouldn't propose any such broadly general rule as all vapes/users are a bit different. But if either is the approach that needs stirring, it would be convection in my view (again, the FF2 as an example). With conduction, if you grind fine and tamp well there is often no need to stir at all.

Also, convection tends to have less draw restriction than conduction vapes...but again, GIANT generality for which I'm sure that there are a lot of exceptions.

I love my GH but don't think its for everybody and I can't recommend them until they improve their reliability.

I do have a Flower Mate Pro and its a very servicable vape. If you are looking for something for similar use cases as your FM Mini, you might want to check out the Boundless CFX. Someone mentioned above the Mighty. To me, the CFX is a Mightly like device for less than half the price and also way cheaper than the IQ which looks nice but...wow, $340 or so for a conduction portable. I have had the chance to use a CFX and its a very, very nice portable, particularly for the money. AND, although its a conduction device, no tamping needed and it seems to work very well with either a full load or down to about 1/2 load.

Hope this was helpful.

Yeh totally man, that is a valid partner distraction technique. You have your shiny, they get theirs :)

I have in my posession at present, the air, the storm, and the flowermate mini which i absolutely adore.

Not tried any of those although a friend of mine has a FlowerMate 5.0 which he hated but has now replaced with a GrassHopper SS which he likes a lot but he is leaning more towards canna caps for their longevity and ultra stealth.

I've only had portables:
  • IOLite Wispr (Meh, underwhelming, noisy, butane based became a drag, not that type of drag)
  • MFLB +Power Adapter (This vape was ok but it didn't stop me from smoking)
  • V2 Pro 3 (Meh, used as e-cig and flower vape for a bit but it just kept clogging and had no punch to it)
  • PAX2 (Love this vape, still use it every now and then)
  • GrassHopper (My daily driver, very happy with it, not ready to recommend until I have just a little bit more faith in Hopper Labs and their products durability)

I do love the look of the grasshopper but reviews have put me off..

Yeh I get that, I'm not pushing it, I've had a good experience so far but I'm seeing too many of my FC commerads having repeat issues. I can't quite get my head around the number of repeat warranty returns some people have had to endure, it's a red flag for me and until it settles I just can't bring myself to recommend to anyone.

The iq looks good. The pax 3 looks cool too, there's so many and i want them all to be honest lol.

Ah man the IQ looks soooo good, I'd choose it over the PAX3 just for the removable battery. I know the PAX3 can do concentrates but I think if it's concentrates you want then you would choose something entirely different. I've heard the PAX3 concentrate feature is a little lack luster.

All you peeps are right tho. Everyone has there personal preferences in a vape.

Too true, that's why I wish there was somewhere I could try these devices out before buying but unfortunately in my group of friends I'm the pioneer.

Good luck, buy all the vapes you can, keep enough dodh back to buy her a pair of FORGEDABOUTIT LOUIS VUITTON's :D

Thank you for your reply. I will definately checkout the boundless CFX. The money i was going to spend on the titanium grasshopper £249.99 is pretty much what the davinci is going to be maybe a but more but i'm happy with that lol. I will still look around at some others. To be fair my arizer air is a beast and could see me through nicely. Same with my flowermate mini. But i just can't help myself and have a little nosey every few months at what's coming out lol. Reliability on the grasshopper kinda ruled it out for me for now. Not saying i won't buy one next year tho haha

@GreenHopper she will be lucky if she gets a mcdonalds and a pair of socks lol. And exactly that with the pax 3 not having a changeable battery is the off-putting thing. I mean most of the time i could use the iq. If i'm being stingey and rashioning my stash i can use my air. I luv this forum, everyone's so helpful and cool to eachother. Some other forums i have been on people are always having arguments lol i got my mrs for that haha

@invertedisdead i will check out the sticky brick. I'll google it now. :-)

Also out of all the vapes i've tried. My flowermate mini is my fav, i got it for £55 from puffitup when it was on a deal. I've paid like £250 for some vapes and the flowermate i still prefer. It's reliable. When i go fishing i just kick back having a nice session in my bivvy. And out of any vape i've passed around to friends. Everyone has got a cloud off it. Whereas my air so many people can't hit it lol. Nice big clouds. The way i hit it it seems like the closest thing to smoking a joint. For the money i cannot praise flowermate enough.

I can relate, many people struggle to get a good draw with my Air as well.

It's always interesting to get other peoples views on these things. Different folk have different requirements so it's just great having the range and choice that we do.

My friend said his flowermate gave off too much odor, his wife is really paranoid about the local community finding out about his pro cannabis ways so he's constantly having to hide his activities.

He also said waiting for the device to heat up was a pain as he had to leave the back door open to avoid the smell.

I actually recommended the device to him as a tide me over because of it's incredible value so I don't think it's a bad device at all. Just wasn't for him.

One day man, this whole prohibition bullshit will be over and we will be able to meet up at festivals/cannafairs and try out all the latest vapes.

Actually we do that today in spite of the prohibition :smug:

Then you will like the CFX. Big clouds, no technique needed. I just works.

Not saying anything negative about the IQ. It has piqued my interest but I would like to see it out in the wild a bit for $275 (NOTE: corrected price...I had thought it was $350 but that's not accurate).

Also, the CFX heated to 365 in 22 seconds....that's dang fast.

@GreenHopper my mrs moans about the smell all the time. She used to moan i'd go outside for a joint when i smoked. Now she moans about the smell of my vape. I guess it does smell a bit but it's nothing a window open wouldn't clear pretty quick. I live in Brighton in the UK and it's pretty laid back as there's people enjoying the herb everywhere. If your at home and not causing anyone any bother. Then its all good. But i completely understand different areas view things differently. And some people just can't seem to get over the fact it's safer than alcohol, smoking cigarettes, some pescription meds. And that there's all kinds of people from all walks of life enjoying the herb and still enjoying a healthy happy lifestyle. But you gotta respect everyones opinion. Some vapes are definately alot more stealth when heating. I saw a vid of someone hitting a pax on a plane. They were using some gadget to exhale the vapour into and it kinda absorbs it so it doesnt smell. Worth looking into

@Baron23 i have looked at it. I just hate the look of it lol. I no i shouldn't be worried bout that. I'm gonna look at it again and watch some vids on it. :-) see if it grows on me.
