Looks incredible! Where do I sign up! I'm throwing money at the screen but nothing is happening.

One feature I'd love to see is a switch, perferrably hidden behind the battery door or something. Just an extra safety switch so it will never misfire in a pocket or bag.

Even better if it's a three way switch. Off, on with led, on with no led.

Only other note is I'd be a little wary of brass -this forum has had very heated debates about the safety and comfort of brass since it often has lead in it to help it be easier to machine.

IIRC the lead is in tiny amounts and wouldn't be released anywhere near the temps we vape at, but it still makes some people uncomfortable, especially when there are plenty of metals around with no lead in them.

I think the brass is just supposed to be a sleeve/collar for the glass to slide into, so it shouldn't be in the airpath anyway... Could be wrong though

I'm personally not too concerned with it either way, just wanted Dan to be aware that some members might be uncomfortable with it. Some pretty vile things have been said about another vape when it was found to not be lead free due to brass.

Some new concept models.

I made this out of wood/paper, then made some adjustments in Photoshop. I feel like the design is almost fully tweaked at this point.

I built this around available rectangular steel stock for the main body. The wood choices will probably be walnut, beech, teak, rosewood...etc.. all tight grain stable woods.

The steel will be available with various high quality surface treatments, paint, DLC coating (perhaps $$$), blue/black oxide patina.. etc..

Model number/logo inlay in bottom right corner etched/engraved with gold leaf inlay.

Glass stem collar to be made in brass, with matte patina.

I want the LED light to be a bit dim, not as harsh as a bare bulb. So I may try to inset a white LED behind a dome of semi-opaque tinted epoxy.

Outside dimensions (not including stem) = 50mm wide x 25mm thick x 90mm high or 2" x 1" x 3.54"

Thoughts appreciated! This is my last digital design phase before making a semi-functional prototype out of the final materials. The aesthetic design process has been long, but I think that the final product will benefit from this early groundwork.
Falling in love with that green one.

Have we brought up any vapor cooling ideas? Or is that even a concern?
The venus apollo has a really effective in tube vapor cooler:

@ZC , The brass is just a sleeve to hold the o-rings/glass stem, it's easy to machine and I dig the colour. It won't be in the air path, so no worries there.

Locking fire button that turns the LED when it's unlocked is a feature I really want to make happen.

@nickdanger , I will most likely sell these the same way I do the Okin, anyone on my mailing list will hear about when these will become available.

@Kalessin , Personalized LED colour would be really cool I think, because not all woods/steel finishes will match with a single LED colour. It wouldn't be any extra work to have an assortment of epoxy tints for different colours. That combo you list sounds great!

@hippogriff , Oh man, I feel like you've got some knowledge I need. I'll send you a PM when I've collected my thoughts. That suggestion of using a doming resin on the diffusion film seems perfect. Thank you! Also your website/products look really neat! And you work/worked for ILM? COOL.

@NickDlow , I have not put too much thought into it yet. As posted above, the venus apollo vapor cooling setup is a good way to go, with the alternating air path it's quite clever! Any number of metal structures could be used to achieve similar results. I feel like a very coarse SS wool stuffed into the airway would have a similar cooling effect. Also, packing the airway with SS balls/shot could work. I like the idea of being able to adjust the amount packed into the stem to customize the exact level of cooling and draw resistance. You could have a cup of SS balls in your freezer as well... hmmm.. wait.. that could be a choking hazard.. nevermind, heh. There would have to be a stem cap with airway smaller than any of the balls... Well, you can tell.. I'm still thinkin' about it, heh.

As for the stabilized burls I am sure it's possible. To manufacture these in batches, I will need to start with long lengths of stock so that I can hold the material while I machine the wood and advance through the various processes. Since stabilized burls usually come in small-ish blocks it will require some additional work holding steps.. perhaps truing up the block and gluing it onto additional stock.. It would definitely be custom order territory. But this would be the case for any burl really. It would certainly look cool!

I like the design for sure!

For the brass, the conclusion of the above-mentioned drama was that "marine grade" brass is likely to be safer and with the added bonus of better oxidation resistance. Average brass can stain in various ways quite easily and not necessarily in an artistic manner I mean.

Just by looking at the aspect ratio, I think your stem might be a tad too short. The length of the Milaana one is barely adequate, anything shorter with a convection vape gives you the disturbing impression of sucking a hair drier (I'm re-using the comparison from another member here) When I broke my short Milaana stem I tried using the remains a few times and the hot vapor hurt my teeth. My Firewood 2.1 stock stem was even shorter and I never was able to use it as is (had to hook some custom extension otherwise it was unbearable)

For the cooling device it's a dual edged sword. Both the Apollo and Sidekick have one, and it does work, but people also say it's a reclaim generator. It clearly robs the goods out of your vapor via condensation. So you really need to make it easy to clean and reclaim (this obviously rules out your SS wool idea...)

I gotta disagree on stem length. My go-to Milaana stem is about 1/3 of the length of the stock short mi stem and I get fantastic results. IMO in an unregulated manual vape feedback is super important and a short vapor path gives the best feedback.

That said, varying stem lengths for different people or different uses is never a bad idea.

Plus, at least with how in envisioning the internals of Dan's vape, I imagine the heater itself is much closer to the bottom of the unit than the Mi. The Mi heater sits about an inch high off the bottom of the vape due to the bottom plate, button, etc. Dan's design should allow the heater to be much lower since it doesn't require anything below the heater.

So that short protruding stem doesn't necessarily mean as short of a vapor path as you'd think.

But please correct my assumptions as necessary.

It all depends where the load sits... Not where the heater is. That's where the vapor starts it's journey to the mouth. :2c:

Right and after all our experiments it's pretty clear that with convection units you need to have the load as close as possible to the heater, otherwise your efficiency drops almost exponentially with the increasing distance.

But @ZC is right in the sense that we don't know how long the stem will be down inside Dan's device, the bowl might be way lower than what I assumed in my last post.

@KeroZen , I will admit that the stem length shown here is the only dimension that's not accurate, because I just have no way of knowing how long it needs to be at this point. These things will sort themselves out in time.

And, in regards to the SS wool. My thought was to perhaps use pre-cut discs of wool, stacked. Each disc would fit nicely inside of the chamber.. so you can vape the reclaim directly off of the SS wool, then boil/soak em clean.. or perhaps just toss and replace with new material.

It could be a mess though, I am just tossin around ideas at this point... and it may cool the vapor too much, or only have enough thermal mass to be effective for a couple hits..

@Yoosh , Interchangeable stems for sure! Since it's just a simple straight tube it will be very easy to replace/customize.

I love this idea as someone who doesn't have the patience to collect reclaim in alcohol for later use

Ever since I saw this on reddit I've been so excted for it's release! Is there a date on this yet? Still can't get over how good the concept looks, can't wait to see it produced!

Thank you!

I've been super excited to get this out... still working through the prototypes. No exact release date yet.

The last concept that I posted is still going ahead.

Hopefully I can post some updates soon! Been so busy with the Okin lately.. but I think I'm going to take the month of December off to focus fully on this new vape.

OK, caught up.

Dan, you had me at EWOK MOVIE! Battle for Endor I assume, not the other one. Saw Caravan of Courage at the cinema as a kid :)

EWOKIN!

I'm in. Sign me up. Here, have my first born.

Hahah! Ewokin!

And yes, Battle for Endor! Caraven of Courage was pretty sweet as well though...

And okay okay, I will make sure to sign you up when the time comes aha.

p.s. - I have not forgotten about that custom Okin crown request. I have been thinking about a torch powered vape for a while, so I could perhaps work that into it... I don't know yet, heh.
