How to survive a cannabis tasting session?

Hey FC!

What are your experiences with those mass consumption events? What are your strategies for enjoying a long day full of cannabis if you want to taste a large variety of strains in short time without getting wasted?

I'm often curious how a perfect weed related holiday in a weed friendly country would look like for me. But being a lightweight user and micro dosing fan by myself I struggle to believe I could enjoy a trip full of cannabis without a proper plan. Currently my day is done if I vape 3 different strains in 2 hours, even from 0.05g each. And with such low quantities the taste is often minimal, too.

So how do you approach events like conventions, markets or weekend trips for a maximum taste experience? Maybe vape only on low temp around 180, filling the prefered vape to the max and only take a few sips instead of a longer draw? Do you keep the vapor in your lungs for longer or shorter?

I'm also corious about your countermeasures when it starts to overwhelm you! Fresh air, lots of walking, fruit juices, what works best for you?

My Mind Is Free
A judge of the high times cup was being interviewed in some issue of the magazine a long time ago. He was asked to describe his process. He would roll up a joint of everything, and had a long multi-holed device that let him load all the joints at once/sample everything at once.

The reporter/interviewer asked something around the lines: "So... how can you tell things apart?"

Judge: "What?"

And then the article moved on without explanation...

I found that amusing and sad, but bout sums that up.

When I smoked I used to go over to Amsterdam for their Cannabis Cup in November.
The coffee shops are all doing their best to impress with their new and old weeds and hash and the choice is vast and always of the best quality.
I used to have a big tolerance and once I'd tried a bit of all the new stuff I would cocktail anything left over, much to the coffee shop budtenders disgust.

I would go with the low temps and perhaps not inhale at all if it's just the taste you are after. You can always enjoy it fully at the end of the day. No point in over doing it early and run the risk of not appreciating the rest of the day.

There are so many different strains IMO it would be a waste to fill one device and just sip.
Vapcap would be my choice as it can be loaded with tiny amounts, half bowls being 0.025g and low temp flavor is an easy technique to master with one.
I am sure the coffee shops will sell you half a gram at a time, they used to when I went, if they don't then ask for a gram but made up of two different varieties and remember which one is which.

Fresh air and walking help, as does sugar. I watched a friend collapse in the Greenhouse, Centrum, and the woman behind the bar jumped up shouting 'Zucker wasser' and she loaded a glass of water with 2 or 3 teaspoons of sugar and gave it to him.

If you start with the positive mindset that if it all gets too much at least you know why, and it won't take long for you to return to normal, this will help.

Take your time and enjoy the situation at your own pace, I seen many casualties trying to cram in as much as possible in a short space of time.
Always go with some one you trust and know well, that way if you do over do it at least they know what's going on and can look after you.

thanks for the replies, espacially phatts for the detailed hints!

Had this in mind while in Amsterdam last month and tried to make the most out of the time there cannabis related. Sugar and walking between the sessions helped a lot to remain stable, 20km each day on the feets speak for themself. Seems that I was in a good condition for this trip. :D
Had a Vapcap and Crafty with me and never felt the need of combustion.

Had some grape-sugar in the pocket, if a sativa was getting too overwhelming it helped a bit. But after the third strain on one day all hopes to seperate or compare the different flavor profiles were gone, was fun anyway :D

A little hint I got from a local I need to share:
If anxiety creeps up on you have some black pepper corns at hand and chew one or two of them slowly at a time. It really helped me coming down after the sugar gave up on helping.

Ive heard people chewing peppercorns if you overdo it. I personally wouldnt eat any cannabis infused food. Edibles can get to too medicated without knowing it and for too long of a time. Eat regular food that will help you to not feel so wrecked. On an empty stomach I get more medicated.

Really pleased you enjoyed yourself @horst, it's all too easy to overdo it in Amsterdam, so many Coffee Shops and varieties to choose from.

I've always enjoyed my visits there. The Dutch have a good attitude towards life, Monday mornings are still the weekend to them.
Never felt threatened or uncomfortable at any time, but it is still a city which needs to be paid some respect, pickpockets and roofie crews are ever present, always go with someone else. You're too easy a target when on your own.

Will have to give the peppercorns thing a try sometime, which will mean over doing it one day. Scientific research of course :).

The one time I went to a weed-vent it was free dabs in the patient's section and I went a bit crazy trying them all out.

It was a small event, but still I think I hit every vendor. lol.

I was pretty comatose by the end of the dabbing session and maybe thankfully it got shut down shortly thereafter. Something about permits and being only allowed inside the building not outside.

But yeah man, from that past experience. If I were to do it again, which I plan to go to another even when I catch wind of one in my area, I would take it a bit slower on the dabs. Maybe 3 per hour or something like that. lol.

My friends and I were just walking around attracted to rigs and hitting them. lol. It was beautiful.

rofl. That's just...sad. I'm rolling. :D

They really need a few days to test out everything. The high it gives you needs to be reviewed as well. I wish they did things this way, then maybe I would trust cannabis cups results from judges instead of just going by their weed lab tests and thc percentages.

Nice thread.

I believe in the peppercorns. I've used them during a THC induced panic attack more than once. My mind believes it works and that's all that needs to happen.

If I was on my way to such a festival, I'd make sure I was hitting it hard for the days before the show. I'd vape right up to leaving for the airport. This way my tolerance is up there and I'm ready to give er the spurs.

Never been to a show but maybe someday. I have been to Amsterdam though. Picked up some nice blonde hash. Rolled it with tobacco (:puke: I was young) and smoked it in some park. Didn't realize that was against the rules. We were touring some other countries but I was afraid to leave Amsterdam with it, so I wrapped the leftover hash up good and shoved the little package under a park bench on one of the main avenues. One month later we returned and it was still there under the park bench. :spliff:

I'd say if you want to do such a long session sampling a lot strains in one day. Ramp up your tolerance beforehands with edibles or concentrates.

I experienced a way higher tolerance after one or two of my "special" Cappuccinos in the mornings with a tea spoon of my canna coconut oil each...

If you want to be able to try a bunch of different strains, and last all day without getting too stoned to have fun, you gotta do both of those things you mentioned (except for filling the vape to the max), and don't hold the vapor in. Taking small hits and exhaling them without holding them in will still get you buzzed, but is much less efficient than holding for a minimum of a few seconds. You could always raise your tolerance, but that seems like getting fat just
to be able to enjoy a food festival more. Not enough reward for the sacrifice.

Carol, what are peppercorns supposed to do? I imagine they are high in beta-caryllophene, like cracked black pepper or cloves? What reactions have people had to using it?

Interesting thread... agreed on the food, and vastly smaller hits... CBD at the end of the night will help as well.

black whole peppercorns when used fresh ( not preground) act on the same cannabinoid ( cb) receptor that cbd acts on - the cb2 receptor. the pre cursor compounds in black pepper is an cb2 receptor antagonist. that means the receptor signalling is slowed down and not activated like thc activates the cb1 receptor etc... the cb2 antagonist effects slow down the signalling of thc at the cb1 receptor so thc metabolism is maintained longer... it's the agonist effects thc has on the cb1 receptor that causes paranoia or just to much energy and uncertainty etc...

"Unlike psychoactive THC, CBD has little binding affinity to either the CB1 or CB2 cannabinoid receptors."

"By inhibiting the enzyme that metabolizes and degrades anandamide, CBD enhances the body’s innate protective endocannabinoid response. At the same time, CBD opposes the action of THC at the CB1 receptor, thereby muting the psychoactive effects of THC.

CBD also stimulates the release of 2-AG, another endocannabinoid that activates both CB1 and CB2 receptor. CB2 receptors are predominant in the peripheral nervous system and the immune system."

the black pepper acts as a pre-cursor compound directing how the main compounds thc/cbd bind @ the receptor site and those pre cursor effects can prolong the metabolic rate of break down of the canna molecules... thc can be super exciting and energetic and adding in the black pepper slows it down some so it's not so supercharged etc...

beta-caryophyllene acts as an antagonist on the cb2 receptor just as cbd does... they are both receptor antagonists prolonging signalling of thc at the receptor... I've gotten most of my info at the black pepper thread over at GC= grass city

A little while ago I over did it a bit and sent myself beyond orbit.

I was worried I was about to become Voyager III so decided to give the black peppercorn a try.

At first it distracted me from my plight/flight a little as the pepper sensation in the mouth is interesting when you are flying at 35,000 miles per hour.

After about 10mins the buzz/high didn't ease up but my perspective on it did. I was still off my tits but rather than feeling stressed out I felt more accepting of my situation and even began laughing at myself for getting so blasted.

I'll definitely try it again the next time I leave the solar system.
