Tek MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides)

Haven't found much info on MCT oil as a diluent, so started new thread. Interested in general and safety info as well as specific applications and experience. Several brands of vape pens use MCT oil instead of PEG/PG. The same solution may also work as a sublingual tincture if decarbed. May also be possible to extract directly into MCT oil.

First experiment is (non-decarbed) e-juice. QWET of freeze-dried fresh flowers (low temp evap so likely terpene-rich.) MCT oil is pure C8 MCTs, solvent-free extraction.

Some out-of-focus images:

1 g QWET oil plus 2.5 ml MCT oil immediately after mixing. Solution is slightly cloudy (not just blurry image).

Loaded onto 1.5 mm SS 316L coil (0.21 Ohms) after a few hits.

Overall experience compares favorably to ceramic donut atomizer - excellent flavor, little vapor production.

Background from Wikipedia:

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are triglycerides whose fatty acids have an aliphatic tail of 6–12 carbon atoms.

The fatty acids found in MCTs are called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Like all triglycerides, MCTs are composed of a glycerol backbone and three fatty acids. In the case of MCTs, 2 or 3 of the fatty acid chains attached to glycerol are of medium length.

Rich sources for commercial extraction of beneficial MCTs include palm kernel oil and coconut oil.

Some studies have shown that MCTs can help in the process of excess calorie burning, thus weight loss. MCTs are also seen as promoting fat oxidation and reduced food intake. Interest in MCTs has been expressed by endurance athletes and the bodybuilding community. While health benefits from MCTs seem to occur, a link to improved exercise performance is weak. A number of studies back the use of MCT oil as a weight loss supplement, but these claims are not without conflict, as about an equal number found inconclusive results.

MCTs passively diffuse from the GI tract to the portal system (longer fatty acids are absorbed into the lymphatic system) without requirement for modification like long-chain fatty acids or very-long-chain fatty acids.
May use remaining MCT oil to directly extract decarbed trim or QWET filtrates for use in edibles or capsules. Other ideas?

Hi Accept ,
I was wondering if you've done further tests with MCT? How were the results? Would it be possible to mix vg with the MCT to get a better vapor production and maybe add flavors...

I'm still looking for a replacement for PEG/PG because I hate the throat hit it delivers plus the chemical taste.

And a big thx for sharing your experimentations.

I'm still waiting for m order of MCT oil can't wait to try it out.

Hi ratmee, thanks for your interest. Tried vaping in a tank atomizer, which worked well initially but gunked up coil very quickly. Soaked remainder into Herbalizer pads, which also worked well. Also lapped up a spill for an impressive edible effect, considering it wasn't decarbed. Next will be extracting decarbed QWET filtrate directly into MCT for tincture/medibles.

For vaping, MCT seems like a viable alternative to PEG/PG, but ultimately a matter of preference. Sensation seemed more like a vape pen than an e-cig. For best e-cig experience, still like dual coil build with PEG/PG concentrate on one coil and AVG on the other. Unpleasant flavor/hit of PEG/PG is much less noticeable, very enjoyable overall. Best thing about MCT is probably versatility. Expect excellent results as tincture. Good luck and report back!

Edit: Forgot to mention. Tried mixing a drop of MCT/extract with a drop of VG. Clouded up immediately. Not very scientific, but also not very hopeful. Reminiscent of too many failures.

So MCT oil seems to be the next big commercial health food product (like when coconut oil got very popular in past 5 years). I'm seeing more and more brands. Amazon is full of vendors now.

I just wanted to check, are you using something like this? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00M...1_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=M5M00R3GJ7RN7CCQ23YN

Hi RT! Tried a teaspoon neat. Didn't notice an energy boost.

Went with bulletproof's octane. Shark Sandwich questioned the desireability of the decanoic triglyceride, so went with pure C-8.

Just extracted decarbed mystery trim in remaining 490 mls. Held 1 ml under tongue for 1 minute before swallowing on an empty stomach. Came on in 1-1.5 hours, peaked at about 3. Continued effects for another hour. Great, medible type experience - fuel for cleaning house. Add that to your bulletproof coffee for a serious boost.

"Medium"-chain is 6-12 carbon atoms. Most dietary products have a mix. Caprylic (or octanoic acid) may be marginally more desirable, so why not go with just that, since it's readily available? Bulletproof also claims to be solvent-free. Read lots of good reviews and no bad ones. No complaints here. Not getting a quick buccal effect, though, if that's what you're after. More like slow gut absorption.

I did some research on the different kinds of MCT oil and ended up getting one that was 100% c8 caprylic acid. I compared the one I bought with bulletproof and. although I don't remember, there was a reason I decided bulletproof wasn't as good.

Yes, RT, that's it. One ml of this extract, orally, every 90 minutes, keeps me where I want to be, but I just had it on hand for dissolving concentrate and vaping. Coconut oil may work as well orally, but more safety concerns with inhalation (also not much cheaper). Glycols may work better for buccal absorption, as you observed on your tincture thread.

Little Maggie, please let us know what you used and why you thought it was better than bulletproof. Bulletproof just seemed reasonably trustworthy for these experiments.

Hi RekOne - don't see straight MCT oil, only concentrated flavors in MCT. Claim to work closely with Skunk Pharm - a big plus. Haven't seen anything on MCT on Skunk Pharm site.

From another thread:

I'm too lazy to cite references, but I'm pretty sure MCT Oil isn't good for say cooking edibles because its flash point is relatively low (in the 300F area I think) and releases carcinogens after that.

I seem to be of the impression vape pens burn hotter than this, otherwise you would not catch a high from the vape.

Wouldn't this be a concern for MCT oil as a vape pen carrier?

A low, regulated temperature might be needed. Curious about commercially available MCT vape pens, but no access. Haven't investigated further, because having tried MCT, personal preference for e-juice is PEG/PG/VG.

NYS medical marijuana co2 oil uses MCT (at least the dispensary I went to does)

Thanks! I found a number of providers who use MCT oil. How bad could it be? Might need to be careful about temperature, though. Could be okay for a low-amp disposable battery and cart, but maybe be careful with a cloud-chasing rig.

This MCT extract is kicking my ass on a regular basis. It's a great base for vape or dab sessions. After a ml or two, it's not about getting high, or even staying high. This trim looked liked lawn clippings. Now, it tastes like herbed butter. And there's a pint of it! (I imagine guzzling it, oil dripping from my mouth as if I had a drinking problem.)

So far my favs are "the clear" it's mct bho and flavor Terps. They taste amazing but every now and then if you hit it to hard it can taste Burnt(thought that was a pg thing). The website I mentioned before seems to have the mct base and the flavor. So since I hate he burnt pg Taste I was gonna grab some mct base and some red apple berry flavor and try making a Batch. It should come out awesome according to the website.

Yeah. I mean if I pull a big rip off this. Def burnt pg like taste. Who knows what's really in these. The banana one is the only one that I'm getting that. The pineapple I can rip it hard and still get great taste. That's why I wanna try my own. I've done the peg pg vg thing and get lucky every once in a while but mct and flavor plus a nice bho seems like the way In a low temp cart with the smallest batt. If anyone has tried mct bho and Terps please post your journey. Lol

Maybe to much battery? How did u make it and what's the ratio. If you don't mind :) I'm about to order mct and the flavor but if you are saying you are getting burnt Taste. I may hold off

Sadly I didn't make it. That's what NY state sells to medicinal patients. So I can't tell you the ratio.

Secondly, it never tastes burnt out of the cartridges. It tastes amazing. That's why I ordered a Linx Hermes and will fill my own carts. I just think that the iJust Mini 2 is way too overpowered. My buddy told me so, I should have listened. The iJust Mini 2 vapor was so hot and harsh and burnt.

Also, maybe I needed to soak it more... But I don't really want to waste any more oil in that thing.

What kind of carts? Can you share?

I just ordered the Linx Hermes system. I saw galactic pens had one too, but I figured they were way too expensive. I didn't actually need the case or the battery but it only turned out to cost me $6 dollars more.
