Parents That Vape

I am a newly father, I have a four months daughter, and since my girlfriend was pregnant I vape at the opened window alone in a room. I am very interested by this thread because with my brother we were wondering if passive vapor can affect brain or lung function.
My girlfriend often says that kids tend to imitate adults' behavior so I should not vape with kids around in order to not influence them (without diabolizing cannabis) and I pretty agree with that.

My parents said the same thing.. they were growing in the garden when my sister and I were babies. My mother made my father stop growing and using altogether but in highschool both my sister and I got into it pretty good. My parents both had to bite their tongue and say "Cannabis is bad! Stop that!" when they thought differently. When they realized my sister and I were not going to stop, they finally caved and said they love cannabis and can they share some... LOL

Maybe my daughter will com into cannabis when older and It is not a big concern for me, I wish we will talk about harm reduction in this situation. But right now I prefer trying to not influence her.
REVERSE GENERATIONALISM?

My kids are nerds?

PC police? (how hard did we fight for free speech)?

HENDRICKS with my headphones on? (they think my music is old fashion)?

Maybe it's a generational thing?

Keep it for yourself.
Let them find it themselves.

Hopefully HISTORY will repeat it's self?

I'm sharing / swapping with my 20 y/o daughter on an occasional basis, but we don't sit down and get high together. I don't think we're ready yet, I'm sure we will in the future. I should say I live in an "illegal" territory. Curious about how legalisation has/is changing family attitudes in the US.

I am a mother of three toddlers under the age of five. I am a pretty severely disabled medical marijuana user, but I used recreationally in college and would have happily continued to use it recreationally had it been legal.

I vape in a different room than my children, but the door is always unlocked and they are allowed to come in (although I will stop medicating until they leave the room and close the door again). They know that mommy has to take medicine. I really wish edibles worked for me, but I can’t afford the cost of how much it would take to keep me medicated. The dispensary charged me $42 for a 30 mg cookie. It was literally like a tickle – as if I had drunk half a glass of wine or something. It was absolutely ridiculous. That same money can get me 1/8oz of flower, which will last me more than a day...But edibles would be so much nicer to do around the kids instead of vaping.

Consider looking into making your own cannacaps, instead of edibles which could be tempting for your children to indulge in, with cannacaps you can simply take a pill like any herbal supplement. Edible prices are typically outrageous for medical users. Most have to resort to DIY to do it affordably. For example, with a $10 gram of shatter I could make twenty 35mg capsules.

I've never gotten high with my parents or children, although I have procured for both when it was illegal. In the past I thought that would be crossing a line, but I'm open to it now.

I was always completely open with my kids about weed and tried to counter the DARE propaganda they were forced to endure in school. It's too bad they are all in jail.. ;)

I wish there was some kind of conversion chart for the eating versus inhaling...but I’m guessing that’s why everyone has all these horror stories of over indulging on the edibles!

And you just stick a little piece of shatter in the pill capsule?

I was pretty aggressive where my my career was concerned and it lasted well past the point where my kids were in their teens. Being hyper-driven....My kids took it for granted that Dad would never mess with anything illegal and mind altering as it was perceived as a career hindrance. I didn't dissuade them. I decided that it was best for me and my kids to get to them to the point where they had become goal oriented and had some expectations FOR THEMSELVES before I opened that door. My oldest was out of college and my youngest was finishing up before I opened up.

When I came out of the cannabis closet over 6 years back my oldest said she had a suspicion. My youngest was the most surprised and it was literally a shock when I said I had been using cannabis since I was around 15 or 16 and couldn't remember a time when it wasn't part of my life.

While I was still hiding my use, my youngest never went near anything illegal and my oldest tried it but never really got into it. Both admitted that they steered clear as much as they did because they felt I wouldn't take it lightly if I found out. I never brought it up and they just assumed I would be livid. In other words...I didn't directly threaten them about using.....ever.

Fast forward to today.....My oldest will occasionally "sip" a little if she's in a hyper-happy place, I'm doing a session and the opportunity and timing is right, but it's pretty rare. My youngest has never tried it and I've told her I'd be open to her trying it when/if she's ready.

Fast forward to today....My youngest is seeing a young man who uses and who we like. I think I shattered the lazy stoner stereotype because I don't think she would have gotten serious with him otherwise. We just came back from a vacation with everyone (youngest and her guy, oldest and her husband (Husband doesn't use nor drink) and grand-baby. I openly did my thing but never around the grand-baby and shared a bit with the youngest's beau. I had some edibles and the only time my kids expressed an interest was with the edibles but I didn't have them with me when they inquired and when I did finally offer they passed.

I'm happy with how it worked out and consider myself lucky because like most parents we didn't have a clue what the hell we were doing.

One good thing my father gave me from all the physical abuse from before I can remember. I have two beautiful adult sons who through their entire life never once experienced a parent hitting them, not one single time. So thanks dad for that.

Amen! Treating my kids the opposite of my dad's parenting style was my approach. My wild dad would probably have been a good stoner buddy, but he should've never reproduced.

One of my friends had a boy and then twin girls. She and her husband were very careful in their usage: so much so, that by the age 12, the girls combing through their mother's purse found a go-pipe and stash and were shakened. This was at the height of the D.A.R.E. program. The girls were devastated. Crying, they asked my friend if their father knew. The poor girls luckily did not share their concerns with teachers or councilors. Now the girls are mothers of their own.

I remember when I was about sixteen and was going to work at my father's business. When I got to work I went into my father's office and hung my jacket up on the coat tree and sat down across from my father. My dad got up and started searching my jacket and pulled out a small black film container. By that time I realized my younger brother narked me out as my father backhanded me across my face. Not that big of a deal I was already hardened from his physical abuse. Then my mean mother fucking father did something I never could forgive, he called the cops. When the cop arrived the cop was very cop like. The cop began to question me which was very difficult at my age so I was slow and reluctant to answer. All of a sudden my father slammed me in the face again which motivated the cop to get all up in daddy's grill. The cop told my father, "If you hit the kid again you are going to jail." Wow, I actually felt safe for a moment and felt good about that cop.

Anyway, the point of this story is that sometimes parents can do so much damage by reacting in certain ways. Your kid may never recover or be able to forgive you depending on how severe the situation became. This can happen at even young ages where the parent child relationship is forever lost, because trust is lost.

My father is dead now and I never have a good thought about him. He wasn't all bad but there was so much that was.

That's one of the saddest things I've read in awhile.

We've never laid hands on our kids. We did the "your grounded, no TV, etc.." We felt that if we loved them as strong as we could they would not want to disappoint us because they loved us just as strong. The other thing we did was show them respect and expected it in return. Love and respect are some powerful shit. Sure...they made mistakes and so did we.... I'll never forget when we had grounded our oldest for a bad grade. She was given the chance to take a make up test and she didn't do much better. She was worried when she got home that day and when she told us about flubbing the make up test I said "Not going to punish you. I give up." She ran upstairs crying like crazy and when I went upstairs to find out why she was crying like that she said "You're giving up on me"? Big lesson for me and the wife and I never let those words slip by again. As they say....words matter.

Almost forgot...there was one time where my wife slapped our oldest. She had just turned 13 and was having an argument with my wife and got so mad she told the wife to fuck off. It was in the heat of the argument and came out of nowhere and was followed by my wife slapping her in the face in a knee jerk fashion. Immediately both of them started crying, holding/hugging each other and both were apologizing for all they were worth. The one and only time either of my kids were hit.

My daughter took me to her favorite dispensary the other day. First time we'd gone shopping together. The ID check guy looked at our IDs and asked "are you her father?". I said, "yeah, it's family day at the weedmart". He broke into a broad smile and said "y'all are a cool family". It was the nicest, genuine compliment that I'd received in a long while.

To think that only six months ago my daughter hated weed (thanks to her mother's indoctrination) and chided me about my use. Funny how trying it can change your mind.

There are several reasons this happens. The biggest is probably the first pass liver effect which turns delta-9-thc into 11-hydroxy-thc which is a much more psychoactive substance. Also people don't wait an hour after consuming to properly gauge effects and will after a short period of time, when they don't feel much, eat more. Yummy cookies and such go down easily as well. So when dosing with edibles that you have no experience with, start small and wait at least an hour before increasing your dose.

You can't really have a conversion chart because the absorption rate is so different. Different people will absorb things differently through digestion and different methods of making the edibles will affect how much they are absorbed. Binding your meds with fats, as cannabinoids are non-polar, vastly increases absorption. Also, overheating can destroy medicine as well.

I had a next door neighbor that I gave a very small piece of a bubble hash bar cookie to at his request. My provider made them and they had a lot of hash in them. Hash that had been properly combined with butter. I told him to just use a piece about as large as my pinky nail, no more. Did he listen? No. He split the whole thing with his wife and they both were stuck for 8+ hours with all the deleterious effects . . .

So I listen to instructions (sometimes…) But I did actually listen with edibles. Unfortunately, I have not found a working dose yet. I can feel the effects but it just doesn’t do anything for the pain. Last thing I tried was a 30mg cookie from the dispensary that they charged me $42 for :disgust: Anyway, it literally felt like I had half a glass of wine. It was just ridiculous, totally useless. And with the expense, I didn’t continue.

But another poster mentioned using wax and shatter in capsules, so I was thinking about trying that. Any advice? (And please don’t make the mistake of overestimating what I know about this stuff. I know nothing. At all.) My plan was just to take a chunk of shatter and down the gullet, but I assume I should eat it with fat of some sort… but I really don’t know how much of it to take or if I need to process in someway first?

You may be one of those people that just can't absorb edibles well. More info on this is available in the medical and cooking with cannabis sections of this forum. There are many people here that just can't find success with edibles.

@asdf420 is correct. The shatter has not been decarbed and I agree RSO would be a better way to go. If you do get a hold of some RSO start with something the size of a half a grain of rice 3x/day and see what happens. If that is well tolerated then you can double the dose. When that is well tolerated double again and so on. This is Rick Simpson's advice, the inventor of RSO (Rick Simpson Oil). You may want to mix it with coconut oil and/or lecithin to enhance absorption. Detailed dosage instructions at link below.

I don't want to derail this thread any further so I would recommend finding a thread on RSO, I started one a long, long time ago http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/rso-phoenix-tears.15156/ or you can start one or contribute to another existing one. Lots of great info in the medical section of this forum.

Thank you, that was incredibly helpful. And I agree, back to the topic on hand:

Anyone had any issues dealing with other parents, like the parents of friends of your children? So far everyone I’ve encountered has been super OK with it (it helps that I am obviously handicapped). But my oldest is entering kindergarten this fall, and I am super scared about my child getting ostracized or something because of my need to medicate.

Why would anyone associated with your kid's kindergarten class know what your medical or even recreational needs are unless they were close friends of yours... in which case they should keep their mouth shut?

I've been out of the cannabis closet for awhile now and I live in a medical only state but even if I lived in a recreational legal state I don't think my kid's classroom would be aware of me taking my cholesterol meds let alone cannabis.

If your concern is getting found out by mistake just keep it to yourself. I do understand though that some folks may look at you differently if they were to find out and cared to distance their children from the exposure. If you can't be good....be careful.
